The Kitchen Table

As you requested Nicole

First fixture is hung (the picture you requested). The chandelier will be much harder, as I'm not sure the last owners wired the "outlet" correctly. Getting there. If you remember, I bought these two or three years before I'm going to move, so I could enjoy them, not just make the house more appealing to buyers. We just didn't know how much we would like it, until we flipped the switch. Apparently, we've never had a nice light fixture because we just stood there in awe. In bright daylight. Can't imagine what it'll be like in the dark. Couple of happy campers.

What confusion! That Kordes shot is no help at all, apart from showing a very short plant. I seriously doubt these will ever be sorted out based on photos. The color of the edge is highly variable. If only the bloom is shown, the sole difference I see is in the number of petals. Written accounts are quite clear that Nicole is a white blend and some suggest Hannah Gordon should be a red blend. A written summary of the confusion is on page 8 of this newletter: http://www.pnwdistrict.org/PNWR%20Spring%200407%20web.pdf Are there differences in prickles or blooming clusters that haven't been mentioned? And I've answered it. Hm. Just like the situation with the cardiology deal last month. There's something wonky going on. Twice, it took over 24 hours for messages to go though. WONKY! I bet that's why I couldn't see your button either. Though, I could reply.

Rusty, my climate is a lot milder than yours. Average low temperature in January is 50°, and average high is 68°. Typically, it won't get below 45° in the winter, but in cold winters, it can get down to 40°, which is not too cold even for most orchids. In the summer, it rarely gets above 80°, but September is the warmest month. We get ocean breezes in May and June that keep us cool, and in the winter, the warm Santa Ana winds prevent us from getting cold. Most house plants will do fine here, but a lot of them will need shade, and I do run out of shady areas. There are lots of microclimates in Southern California, and I am in the beach/coastal microclimate, which is the mildest. I do have trouble with some tropical plants that require a lot of heat because we get very little of that, but I was able to grow mangoes in Venice, which is not too far from where I live now. My climate is similar to South Africa, and so I have a lot of South African plants, as they require little maintenance. I can also grow plants that are native to higher elevations in Mexico and Central and South America. I grew up in Texas and used to visit friends in Mission, in the Lower Rio Grande Valley. Here's a photo from my back yard January 10, 2019 in the dead of winter:

That's really very pretty. I'll be the first to say I am awful at picking out light fixtures, and usually ignore them for as long as I can. More of an....know what I like when I see it but I don't know how to shop for or explain what I want. I really dislike the pendant over breakfast table in this house, its industrial looking + the wrong length for my height. I don't mean bumping my head, but its right in my eyes as I sit down to eat. I've been pretending I don't see it for 9 years ;)

Good for you finding something you love!

Thanks everyone! I'll try it again in the dark and see what it looks like, I can't wait 😁

I'm terrible at it too. It's taken me 6 years to pick out light fixtures for this house. I figure I better do it if I'm going to enjoy it for another couple of years.

Despise the chandelier in the dining room, but painted it, and made it tolerable. It's way too big for the space. It was brass. Every other fixture of my house is silver or crystal.

May I ask where you got that? I have a couple of bedrooms that have really poor lighting. Something like that would really add a lot of sparkle and light it up.

Wayfair! It was less than $100,

an alternate light.

This came about because somebody posted did you find a good deal? And the bedroom chandelier was $147. It's even cheaper now?
