Need help with double sided fireplace decor please!
Comments (9)Please do not change a thing about the fireplace itself, it is gorgeous, including the stone mantle. Your floors are gorgeous too -- warm, and the warm colors in the FP, oh my goodness what I'd give to have a FP in my kitchen like that. I agree with others that what you've got on it is too small and too much, also too horizontal. You need (a) vertical thrust (b) simplicity (c) largeness. On either (or both) side(s), what do you think about a large vertical oil painting (or canvas transfer of oil painting) -- NO GLASS, just a framed oil, leaned against the wall, flanked by a pair of large topiaries or candles or wood candelabre (something of a soft material, not metallic or glass, since you have a lot of "hard" going on there with all the brick and stone. I know this is simple, but simple is often good, especially when the fireplace makes such a grand statement all on its own -- so much so that you could practically leave it completely undecorated and it would say enough! The only thing that bothers me a teensy bit is the exposed black firebox and I'm wondering about a simple (but beefy) fireplace screen in front of it. But even so, the rest of the composition says so much that this little point doesn't matter much....See MorePlease help me with my fireplace! It's un-awesome.
Comments (20)I know many here do not like laminate. I had real wood in my kitchen, breakfast area and hall in the last house. I would never recommend real wood in a kitchen if you have dogs and kids. I worked my tail of keeping that floor nice, and it wasn't perfect when I left either. The new house came with laminate in the kitchen, hall and dining area. I have to tell you, I love it. it looks perfect and is easy to keep up. Also we have shower one piece inserts in the bathrooms and linoleum or whatever they use now-decent brand on the bathroom floors. I love these floors. A quick mop, and you are finished-no cleaning grout and resealing grout, no cracked tiles from the kids dropping things. Also, we had a tile leak in our bathroom in our old house. Out beautiful tile in the master was installed incorrectly and leaked between the shower stall and the tub. By the time we found out we had to replace the entire floor, including some joists and sheet rock the entire garage. Naturally, we had to replace the sheet rock in the bathroom and tile again. It was a nightmare. I told my husband I didn't ever want to look at tile again. Also, when we put the house on the market, I spent hours on my hands and knees touching up that floor. Laminate and linoleum are out of style right now, but they were introduced as a modern convenience years ago-these materials are very durable and easy to clean and very convenient....See MorePlease help! Comments (6)Sorry I do not see your fireplace. Are you planning on putting the TV on one of those IMO they are quite large and I certainly do not like the first one at all in a MCM type style I wnt to one of your other posts to see part of the fireplace I would need to see what else you are doing with the fireplace other than a thick wood mantel I would need to see the fireplace wall...See MorePlease help to update my fireplace!
Comments (23)Hi Lynn- Congrats on your new home! It's not just the stone of your fireplace that's the problem. The mantle is off. It is too wide. I can't tell if it is too tall, I'd need to see a photo from farther back. also the color of the mantel should match the color of the adjacent walls. That white is jarring. I think you need to select your new mantle before you decide on new filler (trim). I don't know what the white mantel is made of. Can you just remove the mantel shelf and replace it with a better proportioned one, and leave the rest of it there? What type of fuel does the fireplace use? If it is wood burning and you will actually use it, I would get rid of that white carpet for sure and make sure you have a hearth that is sufficiently long enough to catch any sparks. Every municipality has a code, but would add extra distance to that. If you are going to have a gas or electric fireplace with non combustible logs or just flames, that isn't an issue....See Moreratherbesewing
