shower smell & plumbing question

We have a smell after shower is turned on. it is a trvertine tile shower.

Not sure if the p-trap is issue or something around the weep, but the smell is sewer like.

i was told to shine a light doen the drain and look for a reflection to confirm the p/trap working proper.. Poked my head under house and noticed The curve portion of trap is not directly below the drain so i cannot see a reflection. It doesnt appear to be leaking either. Also,, there is a strange valve on a horizontal pipe connected just past the ptrap connection to drain line. Does

anyone recognize this valve or technique and can advise how to deal w the smell?

I think you are asking about the expansion plug used in place of a threaded clean-out plug. Odors can drive one nuts when they have eyes and nose on site,I don't even attempt locating them from 1k miles away. Water heaters often impart a sulfur odor to water. This isn't the silver bullet you were expecting but here's a test. Double bag a 20-30 gallon trash can with over-size plastic bags. Sit can on stool.blocks or other support tall enough to allow tapeing bag opening over shower head. Run shower the minimum time it normally take's for odor to be detected. If no odor is detected,,,,,,,,until bag is opened you've found the source. If no odor before or after opening bag,empty can into drain to see if odor is then detected. Report back with results and we can talk about remedies.

It inly takes a single gallon, maybe 2 for smell to come from the floor area. i think the drain…

i tried the test w plastic trash bag. there was no smell. Water is clean coming in. thanks for suggestion #1. whats next?

Do you want to have everything separate? If you do then the possibilities are endless. A volume controller, A temp controller, a diverter. Or separate controls for each. There are honestly too many combinations to list. As to how to organize the valves, with three separate functional items often times the volume control will be lowest on the wall, then the temp higher than that and the diverter highest. If having two control valves for two heads, say one on the wall and one an overhead, I'll often stack them vertically with the ceiling fixture's valve mounted above the wall fixture's valve. Now you wrote "unfortunately". Do you want just one valve? You could use a Thermobalance III valve, its everything in one: thermostatic temp control, volume control and diverter. You can use it to divert the water between two heads or if you go for the third head, three heads. With the TBIII You'd greatly simplify the wall layout. A single valve body covered by a single trim kit. Does that make sense? Decisions, decisions...

I have the shower riser at home already, so it will be available when they come to measure for the glass. I've decided to alter the design a little bit and have the riser come over the glass in an arc instead of through the glass, so that should make things a bit easier. I am also planning on having the glass fabricator make a (frosted) glass topper for the knee wall - unless you can recommend a better material for that purpose? I'll make sure they know to do the holes for the brackets in the shop, though! The glass people I've spoken with suggested a bracing the glass with a chrome bar extending from the long shower wall to the glass wall (the one with the showerhead) - I'll be sure to ask if any other supports are necessary. Yes, you can leave the drain in place. No, you will not have to break the slab for moving the shower wall. That plumbing courses through the walls (and/or ceiling) - not into the slab.
