You need larger shutters or none and this would be my color choice with the brick and the copper please do not paint that brick ever or the copper IMO all the landscping should be dealt with too much hiding the entry and this house would look awesome with good foundation plantings

The different colors on the siding and brick make the house look squatty. I would paint the siding and brick the same color.

A warm white would be nice, like Benjamin Moore Simply White. Choose your favorite color for the front door, it is so easy to change the door color if you change your mind. Don't paint the copper; at least wait until the rest of the changes are made and then reevaluate.

A siding color that is more complementary to the brick. And I would also probably keep the copper, as is. If I altered the copper, I would not match it to the shutters, but would maybe go for a deep blue or blue green color. I would add solar lights on walkway. And I agree with suggestion to make the entry door area and pillars appear less blocked by foliage.

Would not be my choice. And I don’t think it offers your house a unified look. But if you like the sage and this combo, it’s definitely one option.

For a unified look that does not make your house look split up or mismatched, you need a color on the siding that is closer to the brick color. The color I used in the quick mockup I did earlier may not be the exact color... I might go a bit more taupe... But the idea is - the color I used is going in the direction of more cohesiveness with the brick.

I agree with making the siding more beige than cream. I do love the sage green though!!

I'm neither her nor there about the shutters, but I find the black off putting. I think they should be white to pair up with the wider white trim on the picture window. I love the copper roof.

The landscaping .... I hate to remove things but I would focus alot on that. I like the taller tree with the pink flowers, dislike the 2 short trees by the walkway near the front door and some of the shrubs are just too big for where they are positioned ( blocking the windows ).

Do things in stages. when it starts to look better then stop and let that sink in for a while. That way you don't over do.

It is not a good idea to paint brick. Brick needs to be able to breathe. Once you do it you are also creating a periodic maintenance requirement that you didn't have before. If you can get your siding to be closer to the color of the brick the house will look better. You will be amazed at how different paint colors look in daylight as compared to the chips so be sure to sample before the whole surface is painted.

I think the white around the first floor window and on the porch columns is too white. It would help to tone it down, either to the sage which has been suggested, or a cream. If the copper roof is really copper it will age to a light sage green so you can leave it alone. I think the upstairs windows do need shutters. The color will depend on what you end up with for a color on the siding, but black is probably not going to be the best choice.

Thanks all. Is it really that bad to paint brick? I've read of many advances in this area (able to breathe, no moisture issues etc). That being said - I do like the option of painting just the siding. Beige or green could be nice! Also like the white that palimpsest recommended.

Agree on the landscaping - Japanese maples need to go.

The current shutters are tuxedo gray. Any ideas for a better color with beige or green siding that would blend with the brick and awning??

I like the idea of painting the siding a beige or taupe color matching the darkest tone in the brick; using black shutters - sized larger than currently; using a brownish black for the trim; and maybe wrapping the posts in cedar.

You have yellow and pink going on now. Your copper looks lovely with the brick, so even a more coppery tone might work.

If you want to stay with white, I'd choose a much less bright color, - something like Sherman Williams Shoji White or Oyster White or Natural Choice.

I like your Japanese maple, it bring some color, I would leave it.

We painted our brick house 15 years ago and it looks as good as the day we painted it. No regrets and looks so much better.

Leave the brick alone …. & the Japanese maples !

How close are the 2 trees by the door??

It is hard to tell from the picture. Plus they are going to get bigger. I would spend the money to relocate them to a better spot so you can expose the front door area more.

I like the darker trim idea - however the brick in brancatz’s photos look much darker than ours (more pinkish)? whidh seems harder to match unfortunately.

So no votes to adjust color or remove the copper awning? I get the charm but dislike all of the contrasting colors in front!

@JB B The copper awning is a really nice feature & pairs so well with brick so I’m not surprised so many like it. If it’s too many colors that bothers - take off all shutters, decide on color for top siding & make sure the downspouts get painted that new color. if you don’t want the white trim painted the same as top siding, which I wouldn’t, paint it a color that goes with new top color or paint it a creamier white. Also, I do hope you find a home in your yard for those two Japanese Maples!

Agree about the shutter option - so basically top and trim should match 1) either paint same white to match existing trim 2) paint trim a creamier white to match existing siding or 3) new darker color (taupe) and trim

Painting the brick is tempting but this would no doubt save money and potential maintenance down the road.

I copied and expanded a piece of your brick, and you can see the pink in it. So your brick is a pink-beige. Sometimes described as beige with red undertones. That's why the yellowish siding doesn't look quite right, and IMO the copper, although very beautiful on its own, doesn't complement the brick. (If you had a sweater the colour of your brick, you wouldn't wear it with an orange/copper shirt, I hope.)

Here's an article about working with pink-beige. It's an easy colour to go wrong with. The article talks about interiors but the advice would also apply when you were looking for a siding colour, for example. I wouldn't use sage green with it - the example shown above is a very popular one, often re-posted. The orange brick looks great with sage green. But orange brick is not what you have.

I am a fan of almost any brick colour and I'm from Toronto where everything is brick and nobody paints it. But if this were my house I would paint it. Use a coating meant for brick such as Romabio, not a regular exterior paint meant for wood.

In regards to the landscaping, I would keep the maples but move them. They don't have the space to grow where they are. The plants aren't all bad just in the wrong places.

Thoughts on a limestone wash to get a better brick color without fully painting? Could open up a lot more options for siding color.

And if painting the awning is frowned upon, can I just remove it or get a different style?

@JB B did you like either of the looks from palimpsest above? I think painting all the trim and siding the same looks nice and allows the copper to "shine". I especialy like the darker tone that blends a little with the roof and gives the illusion of height on that second floor.

Our house isn’t brick but it is a pink. Although its not a favorite color painting the trim brown and the garage door a purple/brown work well. If you get paint samples and hold them up against your brick you will be able to tell what works and what doesn't. I would avoid anything with yellow in it.

Check the Romabio site for options. There are other companies too that make this special brick coating.

Remove and sell the copper if you don't want it. Or keep it if you go the paint route.

Your copper will patina over time and be beautiful. You can use a patina solution to speed up the process. Rather than remove it, I would add a copper portico like this:

I think the horizontal lines of your siding are making the top of your house look squat. Cedar shake siding would be pretty.

Colours in photos and on screens can be so deceptive. Things that look similar may or may not be in real life. However you move forward, use large pieces of test colours to be sure you don't have any surprises after it's all done.

Paint the siding, one of the colors from the brick. I sure would not paint the brick. Your house has very nice brick, and the siding color is the only thing that spoils the look of the house.
