Want to update my exterior without painting the brick
Comments (12)Hello from a fellow Kentuckian. I can't tell for sure but there doesn't seem to be a lot of gray in the brick. I do think you need to go away from the orangey shingle color as that enhances those tones in the brick. There are shingle colors that have gray and tan in them and I would take a look at those. Something like this: Owens Corning Driftwood or this Owens Corning Aged Cedar I'm not sure that a straight charcoal shingle would work. Also I would look at pulling a tone from the brick for the siding. The yellow tone now enhances the orange in the brick. I could see the Aged Cedar shingle, a medium light taupe on the siding and trim, charcoal on the shutters and maybe a deep teal on the front door. All of these would "tone down" the brick and make the entire house look more cohesive. Comments (17)It's a really nice looking house! As always, Doug makes the best mockups of adding more interest with additional plant beds. Right now you have a lot of lawn and that's a little boring. More interesting plants really bring a yard to life. As far as the house, definitely keep the brick. It's gorgeous. If it were me, I would remove the storm door and replace the front door with a beautiful new door. If it's in budget, I would look at some nice new garage doors as well, possibly with windows. My neighborhood has somewhat similar houses and the neighbors that have splurged on new garage doors look fantastic. One final thought: maybe look at a different trim color. What you have now isn't bad, but to me it seems a bit yellow against the brick and I think there might be a better color out there for the trim and the bumped out windows. Perhaps some color experts will have suggestions on specific colors....See MoreHow would you update this 1940's brick home exterior?
Comments (31)It's SO sweet, I adore it. I think you just need a few simple additions. A wood awning over the porch with black metal railing (or wood rails). Or if you don't need a porch awning, get a little one for just above the door. Nothing is worse than trying to unlock your door in the rain. Add some new landscaping and paving stones of course. Keep it simple! I'm all for painting ugly brick, but yours is not ugly. Red brick is classic and timeless. I like the idea of sticking with a traditional look like Housegal's suggestions above. But your house is a simple enough design that you could also take it in a slightly more modern direction if you wanted to:...See MoreExterior help - painting brick
Comments (4)No pendent lights. Get bigger light fixtures and replace what you have and also have them black, so they stand out more. I would never paint your beautiful brick. Why would you want to take a maintenance free exterior, that already looks really good, and paint it. Painting brick was a fad for a while, but, that fad is fading very fast. What your house does need is some new landscaping, that has a bit of color in it. It is early in the year, and I do see plantings, but, they look very small, and not a bit of color anywhere. A large colorful pot of flowers on each side of the door would add a lot. I would also paint the door a color, rather than have it white. Maybe a couple of small patio type flowering trees in the front yard too. Mostly what your house needs is a bit more curb appeal, not painting the brick....See MoreK Laurence
