Understanding Karastan Group Names

My wife and I are trying to get quotes on recarpetting our second floor. We've gone to 3 local carpet/flooring shops for quotes and to get samples. We liked one particular sample a lot, which was Karastan Crafted Details Battleship. The shop that had that sample is (a) booked out a few weeks on measurements alone, and (b) said some unsettling things about their installers banging up our freshly painted walls (basically saying it's a guarantee and they can't do anything about it). So we thought we would just go to one of the other 3 shops with the group/color and have them requote with that since they already provided us a quote for another Karastan smartstrand ultra forever clean carpet. Well as it turns out, the other shop came back with a different group and color from Karastan, and they are claiming it's identical to the Crafted Details Battleship. What they gave us is Classical Approach Broadway. And while it looks very similar, I don't think it's the same carpet. It looks slightly more green tinted, and I feel like the piles might be shorter as well. It also feels a little rougher to the touch than I remember the Crafted Details feeling. I've tried to track down information on these group tiers, but it's damn near impossible and it looks like Karastan's website lists neither at the moment. I've managed to find 1 SF price for each online (from separate websites though), and it looks like Crafted Details is nearly twice the price of Classical Approach ($7.89 vs. $3.99 or something along those lines). Does anyone have any specific information about these group tiers or how to identify the differences between the two? We haven't gotten an official quote from the place that provided the Crafted Details sample (because they were booked out), but they estimated about $15.5k for that particular carpet on 1500SF with a staircase. By contrast, we got true measurements from the other shop and an actual hard quote on Classical Approach of around $14.8k. But if Classical Approach is only worth half the price of Crafted Details, it would be a wiser choice just to go with the Crafted Details, even if the official quote comes in a little higher in the end.

No, not really. I called Karstan about it, but they weren't much help. They basically just told me it's just a "different style" (or something generic like that). We ultimately just went with the Crafted Details Battleship, because it sounded and felt like a superior carpet and the color was slightly better than the other.

We are happy with the purchase. My only complaint is that the edges lose carpet fibers kind of easily, but I think that's true of all the modern synthetic carpets nowadays from what I've read. And it really only became an issue, because we had a cat that loved digging up the corners. We no longer have that cat, so it's a non-issue now.

On a related note, there was a time when the cat peed in the corner of one of the bedrooms we don't use often. We didn't realize for a few days, because we never go in there. The pee just pooled at the top of the carpet piles and never actually soaked in. I placed a paper towel on the pee, and the towel absorbed it all. The carpet showed zero traces that it was ever peed on. I know this carpet is pet-proof, but that is truly amazing. I've never seen anything like it before. Very impressed.

Don't give up all hope. suzydaze is doing a Fall Flower Fling. And I am sure she will post overhear. She posts in many many forums. The Fall Fling is her deal and she gets many many participants. If you don't see a post from her within just a few days let me know and I'll e-mail her with your e-mail information if you want me too. Many of you probably already know her. I'm sorry this didn't come off well. I don't really think a very small round robin would work very well and I just don't have the network that suzydaze does. If you can't find hers there is another swap going on over at Southern Spirit Hunters by Barleychown. Hopefully you will participate in one or both of these and enjoy them. I know both of the hostesses and they are good people. I'm so sorry things didn't work out on this one. For some reason your e-mails went to my junk mail folder rather than my inbox. If I had seen them sooner I would have replied sooner. But I've been sick and just haven't been keeping up with things the way I like to. Not that I'm an expert, but I really like that rug in your living room. All of the colors in the rug really accentuate the "calm" of your furniture. I don't know if I'm saying that right...but the rug is a stand out and it reminds me of a room that a designer would put together. Keeping the furniture monochromatic and then putting the one piece in that makes you say "aaaaaaaaahhhhhhh, so that's how you do it." I could sit, chat, and drink wine all night in there! I also noticed that your new little one is attached to your Bichon. So sweet. We adopted a 3 yr old German Shepherd from the pound a few years ago and she is best friends with our shep/retriever mix. Well, after an awkward alpha issue about six months in to it. That resolved fairly quickly, thank goodness. I know that he helped her assimilate into our family...after a year she finally stopped trying to jump into the back of every truck we passed!

Because first you said you liked the darker rugs and then brought up the color balance issue. The rug has been discontinued as was the other one I was looking at last week that was an ivory rug. Somehow all of the ivory rugs in their collection give a more contemporary feel to me. Maybe I am confusing myself? Wanting a traditional rug in non-traditional colors? I'm beginning to think I'm in over my head and am lacking some design sense to pull it all together. You are right, it will cover a large area, though is the remaining 2% left undone. I'm so sick of people coming in and asking about my blue tape "rug". Haha! Maybe I'll have blue tape for the next 10-years trying to figure this out. That sage color is the only one that causes me to hesitate--hard to tell if it works or clashes.... Taken as a whole as in your PS version, it does seem to work.
