Refrigerator Magnets
Comments (40)I kind of miss my white fridge with the magnets, but the kitchen does look much more elegant and calm with the stainless steel one. We put on one velcro spot to attach a clip holding our calendar. I mostly use my electronic calendar, but my husband likes having the written schedule. Fortunately, the sides are magnetic and stick out enough from the enclosure to hold the magnetic "keys" for the baby-proof latches we use. We have one on each side and a third one on the espresso machine so we never have to go far to open a latched cabinet. Whether steel is magnetic depends on the composition. When a steel is made of just iron and carbon, the iron atoms in it can act like little magnets that all align in a consistent direction in a magnetic field so that they are attracted to a magnet. Other elements such as chromium and nickle can be added to steel. They can improve properties such as corrosion resistance, but depending on the amount, they can inhibit the ability of the iron atoms moving to align. Then the fields of the iron atoms going every which way cancel each other out and the material isn't attracted to a magnet. That's why some steel cookware works on induction and some doesn't. I recall mention on the kitchen forum of one stainless steel refrigerator model where some instances had magnetic doors and were non-magnetic - perhaps it depended on which factory the fridge model was manufactured at. Some of the magnets found a home on the filing cabinets in my office which are in a closet with doors that can hide the clutter....See Morefabulous ( and simple) magnetic or chalkboard idea
Comments (8)That reminds me of a project we made for my DD when she was a toddler. We painted magnetic paint on a tray and attached pvc legs to the bottom. Then we painted it pink and purple. It made a great little desk that fit over her carseat when we traveled. That magnetic paint is wonderful stuff. If you have little kids you know there are all kinds of fun magnetic toys. She especially loved magnetic paperdolls with magnetic clothes. And those magnetic storyboards with all the little pieces. And I loved how all the pieces stayed put. If you're going to buy a new cookie sheet just for this project, make sure a magnet will stick to it. I thought a half sheet pan would be nice and big but it's aluminum and magnets won't stick to it. A pretty cookie sheet and some magnetic toys is a great way to occupy a little kid on a rainy afternoon. Thanks for posting this. I think I'll make a couple of these trays for rainy day fun around here. Here is a link that might be useful: magnetic toys...See MoreEating while traveling.....uggggg
Comments (35)I made 3 charcuterie packets and a packed couple good pate containers. Tuna salad cut small, one can made 8. Loaded with veg, nuts, seeds, greens, olives. Crackers and hearty brown bread for cheeses/pate. Easy prep and necessary. We were detained at the border crossing into Canada. (Member of Parliament funeral in the town we stop). They must have checked the violin case a dozen times. All restaurants were closed by then. Next night the ferry loaded at 10pm. Nothing but snack bar food and vending machine chips. Had another charcuterie in our cabin. Day three on the road I made some pastrami/swiss sandwiches on rye with quick pickled onions/cukes. Should have made a dozen more frozen tomato/veg juices. Small Bodum kettle and pour-over funnel for home ground coffee a must. Another cooking forum has a similar thread I did not bother commenting since some poster said, "stay home, why all the fuss!?". lol. Our digestive systems thank me for being prepared. Day three across the island is only truck stop fare. Had a giant salad when we hit our destination....See MoreSuggestions for displaying travel magnets
