Fireplace Tile Dilemma - change it or keep it

Hi Houzzers! We are doing a big fireplace project and I searched forever until I found this fabulous dimensional tile that I fell in love with. The tile installer never worked with this particular tile and he installed the front first and it looked awesome. When he installed the sides he made it all flush because he thought it looked better that way. That wasn't ever discussed and I was expecting it to be dimensional like the front. Our contractor agreed to change by swapping out pieces but we will come very close to running out of tile and now I'm second guessing myself. Should we leave it the way it is and forget about it? I desperately need outside opinions! The last photo is what we were expecting.

A couple of points...if you will use the soaking tub regularly, if it will give you enjoyment, then why not pull the trigger and get it. It's a tub, not a towel bar. Meaning that it's an in-your-face fixture. It's big. It'll stare you down every day. Will you make excuses to friends and explain away the rationale for holding on to the old tub when you show then your renovation? How much will that old tub gnaw at you if you hold on to it? Like others wrote, sell your old tub. If you get $50 or $500, who cares. You sold it. You got something for it. If it doesn't sell, donate it to a resell store. Don't fret over cast iron versus acrylic. Having CI in one bath and Acrylic in the other, no big deal. Also, Acrylic today, the molds are better, the engineering is better...today's acrylic is not the acrylic of yesteryear. So...keeping the old tub versus getting the new one...never mind resale, think about how it will affect you and how you'll use the bathroom.

lyfia, thanks, and we agree. The glass company said building codes only require us to use safety (tempered) glass for the two end panels; the center three could be annealed, if the glass started 18" off the floor. How crazy is that? We'd never want to take that risk, either. Yikes. Fortunately the bid for tempered glass was only about 15% higher than annealed glass (which really surprised me.) So we'd only consider tempered 1/4" if we use glass. Laminated glass (with the plastic skin in the middle) would be the safest, but it's super pricey. I think safety glass would be OK. Another option is 1/4" plexiglass, which I think would work as a substrate for the glass mosaic, as long as I didn't go too big with the panels. (I think big plexi panels might flex, which isn't good for a grouted mosaic...?) At some point I need to go ask the folks in the stained glass/mosaic forum here. So far the pricing for thick plexiglass seems comparable to tempered glass. There would still be small grouted glass pieces on one side of the divider (we could put it on the low traffic side) but I don't think the surface would be risky for kids, since all the sharp edges would be embedded in grout. And it would be pretty hard to break. We considered colored plexiglass panes too, but it just seems so "mod" for the informal, earthy textures in the house. Colored tempered glass and frosted tempered glass are way too expensive (pushing $1000 just for the frosted glass idea, for five 5' panels.) I considered frosted films and frosted spray paint, but I think those ideas have a limited life span (especially if the house has active kids) since the spray frostings can scratch off. And DH keeps wishing for color, and he's got me agreeing. It has to be somewhat transparent or it blocks too much light. So, now considering a fairly open wooden framework, with smallish glass mosaic panels scattered. Still playing with ideas...!

Congrats on the new home! IMO, I would live with the floor as is until you are ready to redo the kitchen, particularly since you said that's planned for a year down the road. It sounds like you are asking if you should redo them now or a year down the road, not that you are asking about keeping them with the new kitchen. In just moving into a house, it seems like it's always a sound idea to "live with it" for a little bit first. You may find some unexpected issues that require attention/money. You may decide that with the kitchen reno, you want to move things around a good bit. You may want to consider if you'll have flooring go wall to wall...if you just place it around the existing cabinetry, you might get locked into a layout that you don't necessarily want and isn't necessarily the best overall for you. For now, what I would do is get some rather inexpensive throw rugs to cover up some of the floor - if you see the floor less, it'll be less bothersome. I wouldn't spend much on sprucing things up in there...no sense in tossing out the money for something that will only be used for a year or so. There's going to be a lot of mess in taking up the floor and re-doing it. And then in just a short period of time, you'll be getting the dust and dirt from remodeling again. Just not worth it, in my eyes. Also, if you wait to do the floor when you are doing the kitchen, you can decide what you want to be the "star" of the kitchen and design the rest of the things accordingly rather than trying to go with what matches the floor you just put down. Since you are a year down the road from the kitchen remodel, I would suggest starting to get your inspiration images together - see what really calls to you for the new kitchen and clip those things. Start looking into what you want for your layout and begin working on that. Start looking into the cabinetry that will work best for your wants/needs/budget. Start looking for the person(s) that are going to do the work. In other words, there's plenty for you to do in the next year or so.

If you repaint the walls a creamy soft white, those orange tiles will look neutral... like an old reddish stained wood floor looks neutral.(reddish stained floors may not be a current favorite trend, but it is still a classic choice) Repainting will make the tile a LOT easier to live with. Then you can make a better decision as to whether you want them replaced or not... you will have at least made them look as nice and neutral as possible and if you still hate them you will feel much better about doing all you could have to like them.

Just leave it, You are being far to picky. Be thankful he did a good job. Lots of posts here about bad workmanship. This should have been discussed before the job, not after.

He's not a mind reader.

I think it looks good the way it is, but I agree that the inspiration picture has more dimension. Can you buy more tile? If you do, certainly check and make sure it looks consistent with the current batch. I don't think you're being too picky because you had a specific look in mind. But I also think the current installation does look good and the tiler seems to be doing a good job.

Yes, definitely should have been discussed beforehand. He should have asked if we wanted the sides to be different from the front before unilaterally deciding to do it that way. The whole purpose of posting this is to see if it's worth changing out and I do appreciate everyone's insight. In the middle of a big project and my mind just starts to go blank!

Well if it's worth changing out in your mind, then do that, but don't expect it to be done at no cost to you. This would have to be discussed with the tiler.

Angel 18432, Our general contractor agreed that the tile wasn't installed as discussed and has already agreed to replace it at no cost to us. The issue is, is this worth doing considering we may run out of tile. This tile came from Canada with a large shipping fee.

I understand being disappointed, as you had a certain image in your mind, but I really do think it looks great as is. And I’m seeing some sort of cut out areas on either side? If so, you might be glad the fireplace sides are smooth. Not as busy a look so close to other room features.

But … only you can decide this. If you think it will always bother you, get it fixed the way you want it.

Nicole, What a relief that must be, contractor sounds like a great guy.

Then it sounds like it's up to you. One option would be to keep it and have him

reduce his fee. Or, order another batch of tile and wait for delivery and installation.

Really is your call, we can't decide for you.

Your inspiration photo looks so much better than what you got.

If it were me, I would get it done over. It's something I'd have to look at for a long time

so it would be worth the wait.
