Comments (16)Monsanto sells sterile seed. Sterile seed, which is genetically modified, is not meant to have reproductive properties so that farmers will not be able to save seed and will have to buy seed every year. If sterile seeds become widespread enough they will create threat of worldwide famine. Yellow corn can be genetically modified. White corn has, for some reason, been prohibited from being genetically modified by the government. Canola and soybean are the other major GM crops. One of the worst things about the Monsanto GM patent is that cross pollination can cause contamination of crops on neighboring farms. Monsanto has thugs who trespass and take samples from crops of farmers who have refused to go GM. Monsanto knows darned well that cross pollination has likely contaminated the crops such that lab tests will show Monsanto patented DNA. The farmers are then taken to court and charged with illegal possesion because they didn't purchase from Monsanto. There is no way to prevent this cross pollination contamination. Wind can carry the pollen as far as fifty miles. Until this year Monsanto has won every court case they levied against farmers. The legal fees have forced nearly every accused farmer out of business, many of whom were farming land which has been in their family for generations and using seed which has been in their family for generations. An American judge, trying a case this year, accused Monsanto of terrorizing small farmers and and conspiring to put non GM farmers out of business, and he ruled in favor of the farmer. This is the first time the ruling went against Monsanto. These accuasations and trials have been going on for at least a decade in both Canada and America. GM may be killing Monarch butterflies. Research is being done to pinpoint the culprit. There is a consumer movement to demand that any GM foodstuffs be labelled as such. I'm not sure how trustworthy it is at the moment. I think it is probably hit and miss until more strident measures regarding food labelling are legally required. Lorna...See MoreAny commercials make you boycott rather than buy?
Comments (50)I'm so sad to hear that so many of you have been driven near the edge of insanity by so many of these inane commercial messages. We have a rather wry take on the advertising system by one of the major ones on CBC Radio One, called "The Age of Persuasion" that I find rather interesting: it's been on weekly for several years. I'm not sure what the web address will be, something at www.cbc.ca/ageofpersuasion, or /persuasion, possibly. Maybe catch it on Sirius 137. Have any of you sent messages to the advertiser telling of your reaction to the message? I suspect that if the half dozen or so of you who disparaged several of the major offenders wrote the company, telling them of your displeasure ... that is shared by others, according to their claim on a high quality internet discussion group ... ... they might pay some attention. Squawking on a thread like this, for fun, is one thing ... doing something constructive about it seems to me to be of greater value. This thread makes me rather less concerned that, out here where the three or so stations on TV are snowy, means that I watch little TV ... and am too cheap to spring for satellite. I lived for several years without cable, in the city, after a house-sharer left ....... to live with a pleasant widow that he'd met at a singles' club. Later asked whether he could return: she liked the dog better tham him. Found a less expensive place elsewhere. I hope that you all have a great week: hope that you don't lose the remote (or a "loved one" take it with them when they leave home, following a disagreement). ole joyful P.S. Less than enthused about the hundreds that I've been getting by email offering Peace of mind for Persons suffering from Pitiful Penis. Or the Russian gals seeking a wonderful relationship. Or the guys wanting to slip a box of Bucks ... Gold ... or Damonds ... out of Africa (many claiming to be workers in a bank in Oagadougou, Burkina Faso) (or other places). o j...See MoreBoycott NABISCO
Comments (35)I usually just let the whining go on since it's like people slamming their fingers in a car door and complaining it hurts. Try to tell them but they often won't do anything about it. Sometimes it's more fun to complain than to solve the issue I suspect. Before going off half-cocked and blaming innocent parties, please educate yourself and use some common sense. Opera, Chrome and Firefox all will enable you to effectively block ads. If you won't change you accept the problems and shortcomings of the browser you choose. A number of us have preached till the milk sours but somehow it has little if any impact for whatever reason. The other thing that doesn't make sense is coming on and ranting to boycott something without so much as saying what your problem is with the company! There's likely some people who'll walk in lockstep like lemmings to the sea but I won't. Make your case. Convince me. Most of us will listen to the reasons and if they're reasonable can be persuaded. But "boycott" only? You're only shooting yourself in the foot. And you're off-base blaming Nabisco for the ad and boycotting them. If you want to boycott someone, your logical choice is to boycott THS. They put the ads up, presuming this is the basis of your boycott. Nabisco buys ads from a places and they generally buy ad time on places like Google, Kontera and other web ad places. Nabisco likely has never heard of Gardenweb, nor any of the people posting here. "Dream on, these ads are sanctioned by GW and no matter what ad blocker your running, you get the ad... " Bull. I don't get these ads nor any of the multitude of problems others complain about nearly daily. I run Opera, Chrome, K-meleon and Firefox. No dream. Fact. "In the last 6 months I bet I have sent 20 emails to GW about their pop up ads,,and it seems to fall on deaf ears.." As said, they're going to raise revenue (they have to) and thinking that you can email a corporation and get them to change their policies to make money is as short-sighted as thinking you can complain to a CEO of a fast food restaurant about a bad cheeseburger or a rude cashier and get their attention. "I would not necesarily boycot Nabisco,,,but if we were to all email Nabisco and tell them that we are contemplating boycotting them as a result of their advertising policies I have every confidence they would quickly get in touch with GW and put a stop to it..Lets be honest, GW runs those adds to pay their bills and if they have a major advertiser threatenting to pull a contract I am sure changes would happen relatively quickly." I give you credit for recognizing that Nabisco is not the villain here but, uh, methinks you overestimate your power a bit. They will (and properly) advise you to contact the website with whom you have the dispute and take the issue up with them. People need to learn to place blame in the right place. And learn how to complain effectively. It would help lower their blood pressure a lot if they did. It's like a friend of mine who gets sick every time he eats mushrooms, yet every time he goes out to eat, he gets something with fungus on it. Then he blames the restaurant! And (yes) talks about essentially boycotting that restaurant because they must be giving him food poisoning! LOL You want to stop the ads? Here's a simple way. Buy Gardenweb and remove them. Problem solved! That is until someone posts a recipe someone else doesn't like and sends you an email that they're boycotting Volkswagens because of it....See MoreMARCH: What are you reading?
Comments (143)Finished War and Peace. He does go on a bit about history and historians....tends to repeat himself. Nowadays, I think the book would have been severely edited. There is an abridged version being released in the UK (along with several other classics) in June. In general, I don't approve of this sort of thing. But, it has to be admitted, it would probably do no serious harm for most people to War and Peace to take the scissors to it...!! (Blasphemy, I know.) Now I need something a little lighter. So, being reminded of this book by another thread about a quote, I'm re-reading A History of the World in 10½ Chapters by Julian Barnes - one of my favourite books - particularly the first and last chapters....See Moresocks
