I wouldn't buy an Oreo now if they paid me. Does anyone remember Hydrox by Sunshine ? That was my chocolate of choice anyway. BOYCOTT NABISCO! Yea! I'm certainly with you Monica!
Even negative advertising is advertising. From a marketing standpoint, sadly, all you're doing with this post is promoting Nabisco. Granted, I don't think they are at fault but nonetheless...
I don't know what you're talking about but I do know some blue Oreo ad here on GW is getting all kinds of attention and irritation from members. Almost makes me wish I could see it...but alas, for some reason I can not.
I think they have fixed it I hope so the ad covered the whole page and you couldn't read the posts the reply box was ther but if you clicked on it the big oreos hit you in the face
Dream on, these ads are sanctioned by GW and no matter what ad blocker your running, you get the ad...
In the last 6 months I bet I have sent 20 emails to GW about their pop up ads,,and it seems to fall on deaf ears..
I would not necesarily boycot Nabisco,,,but if we were to all email Nabisco and tell them that we are contemplating boycotting them as a result of their advertising policies I have every confidence they would quickly get in touch with GW and put a stop to it..Lets be honest, GW runs those adds to pay their bills and if they have a major advertiser threatenting to pull a contract I am sure changes would happen relatively quickly.
I've never seen any of the ads people have complained about over the years/months. Unless I wasn't logged into GW and even then, I've only seen one or two.
I use Firefox and have AdBlock Plus, a free Firefox add-on.
Agree with adblock plus on firefox AND THE EASYLIST you do not see ads anywhere and if you do it is a simple click on the block tab that appears on that ad and you can block those too. NO reason to be bothered by ads!!
I do know about the blue one because I access GW from my Android phone and could see it on there, that was worse than an ad because it took over the entire page you could not read through it and it hijacked you to the nabisco site if you clicked anywhere including to read a post or reply to one. That is not an acceptable type of ad, hijacking a browser is MALWARE plain and simple.
It's very unlikely Nabisco decides where their ads are displayed unless they do their advertising in-house. Generally speaking, they likely hire an ad agency, who then works with ad networks to publish their ads. This site is only one of thousands that this ad is likely appearing.
If you contact Nabisco, whoever reads it will then have to contact the ad agency, who will then have to contact the ad network, who will then have to drop Gardenweb from the sites where Nabisco is running. It's certainly possible but very unlikely that will happen because someone not buying oreos is pennies compared to the revenue generated from these ads.
You're better off contacting GW for annoying ads. They can generally directly choose who advertises on the site. And they want their readers to keep coming back so they are more inclined to listen than a huge company like Nabisco.
I work for an ad network and I can't complain about pop ups too much because they allow me to have a paycheck lol. Sorry for all of you who are annoyed.
I haven't seen the ad at all, and I'm enjoying a delightful Triscuit as we speak. ;)
If it were bothering me, I'd contact Gardenweb, they are the ones who dictate the ads we see on here. I wish they'd just go back to a paid membership and get rid of the ads.
Ads are a necessary evil Someone has to pay for the website and it's costs. When Spike had the site it was relatively small. Under Ivillage they couldn't possibly run this site with a paid subscription at a low enough rate people would pay.
If you don't like them the info is right here on this thread on how to avoid them.
Here is how advertising works and web-hosting works in simple terms from an other site.
Let's create a hypothetical Web company and use it as an example. The company is called XYZ, and it is a small, successful content site. Here are some of its parameters:
* The company has 1,000,000 visitors a month who read, on average, eight pages per visit. So there are 8,000,000 page impressions per month. * The company has 10 employees, with an average pay of $40,000 per year. Some make more, some make less, and $40,000 is about the middle. That means payroll is about $36,000 per month (when you add in the 8% employer match for Social Security and medical). * Benefits per employee run $400 per month, or $4,000 total per month. * Office rent is $4,000 per month. * Equipment leasing and bandwidth to run the Web site is $4,000 per month. * Other costs include phone lines, power, office furniture and computers, legal/accounting fees, travel, advertising, coffee, subscriptions, blah, blah, blah. Let's say it averages $20,000 per month in "other costs."
XYZ therefore spends $68,000 per month.
If XYZ places banner ads on its 8,000,000 pages per month and gets 50 cents per thousand impressions, it makes $4,000 per month. Obviously, that isn't going to cut it -- $4,000 per month does not even cover one person, or the bandwidth and equipment.
If XYZ is able to sell floating ads or Unicast ads at $30 per 1,000 visitors (not page impressions -- visitors), then the site's 1,000,000 visitors per month can generate $30,000 per month. That, plus the banner ads, gets the company to $34,000 per month. You can see that there is still a problem -- XYZ is only halfway to breaking even. But $34,000 is much better than the $4,000 that banner ads alone would generate.
Keep in mind that there is no guarantee that XYZ will be able to sell all of its ad inventory. It would take a very good sales person (or sales force) to find companies to sign contracts and pay for all of that inventory (8,000,000 banner ad impressions per month, 1,000,000 Unicast impressions per month). There is no guarantee, for example, that XYZ can find companies to pay $30 per 1,000 impressions for 1,000,000 floating ads or Unicast ads. If XYZ is able to sell ALL of its inventory, it is extremely lucky, so getting to $34,000 per month every month is a long shot.
XYZ therefore needs to find other ways to make money. If XYZ now:
* adds in sidebar ads * adds in 250x250 ads in the middle of articles * adds in pop-under ads * adds in one or two other ad features
...then the company might be able to bring in another $15,000 per month, and it is getting close to its goal of breaking even.
That kind of math is exactly why you see so many ads on Web sites today. It's either:
* Lots of ads * Switch over to subscriptions (and hope that you can get 50,000 people to subscribe -- no easy task) * Go out of business
A Web site is a business, and it must cover its expenses to survive.
To read the history of advertising and gain a better understanding of various ad formats the whole article is below. Now quityeritching
Nabisco won't care about your boycott, and probably will never know. This is a fairly small website in the scheme of things, and your boycott call isn't going to reach enough people who care. Most of the people who post here don't care if you're bothered.
GardenWeb needs advertisers to stay in business, so they won't care either.
You continue to do nothing to block the ads. So really, I have no sympathy.
I like Nabisco products, and will continue to buy them.
I usually just let the whining go on since it's like people slamming their fingers in a car door and complaining it hurts. Try to tell them but they often won't do anything about it. Sometimes it's more fun to complain than to solve the issue I suspect.
Before going off half-cocked and blaming innocent parties, please educate yourself and use some common sense.
Opera, Chrome and Firefox all will enable you to effectively block ads. If you won't change you accept the problems and shortcomings of the browser you choose. A number of us have preached till the milk sours but somehow it has little if any impact for whatever reason.
The other thing that doesn't make sense is coming on and ranting to boycott something without so much as saying what your problem is with the company! There's likely some people who'll walk in lockstep like lemmings to the sea but I won't. Make your case. Convince me. Most of us will listen to the reasons and if they're reasonable can be persuaded. But "boycott" only? You're only shooting yourself in the foot.
And you're off-base blaming Nabisco for the ad and boycotting them. If you want to boycott someone, your logical choice is to boycott THS. They put the ads up, presuming this is the basis of your boycott. Nabisco buys ads from a places and they generally buy ad time on places like Google, Kontera and other web ad places. Nabisco likely has never heard of Gardenweb, nor any of the people posting here.
"Dream on, these ads are sanctioned by GW and no matter what ad blocker your running, you get the ad... " Bull. I don't get these ads nor any of the multitude of problems others complain about nearly daily. I run Opera, Chrome, K-meleon and Firefox. No dream. Fact.
"In the last 6 months I bet I have sent 20 emails to GW about their pop up ads,,and it seems to fall on deaf ears.." As said, they're going to raise revenue (they have to) and thinking that you can email a corporation and get them to change their policies to make money is as short-sighted as thinking you can complain to a CEO of a fast food restaurant about a bad cheeseburger or a rude cashier and get their attention.
"I would not necesarily boycot Nabisco,,,but if we were to all email Nabisco and tell them that we are contemplating boycotting them as a result of their advertising policies I have every confidence they would quickly get in touch with GW and put a stop to it..Lets be honest, GW runs those adds to pay their bills and if they have a major advertiser threatenting to pull a contract I am sure changes would happen relatively quickly." I give you credit for recognizing that Nabisco is not the villain here but, uh, methinks you overestimate your power a bit. They will (and properly) advise you to contact the website with whom you have the dispute and take the issue up with them.
People need to learn to place blame in the right place. And learn how to complain effectively. It would help lower their blood pressure a lot if they did. It's like a friend of mine who gets sick every time he eats mushrooms, yet every time he goes out to eat, he gets something with fungus on it. Then he blames the restaurant! And (yes) talks about essentially boycotting that restaurant because they must be giving him food poisoning! LOL
You want to stop the ads? Here's a simple way. Buy Gardenweb and remove them. Problem solved! That is until someone posts a recipe someone else doesn't like and sends you an email that they're boycotting Volkswagens because of it.
The day I started to get intrusive ads is the day I got Adblock (as recommended here). Problem solved! No more ads. NONE!
People need to learn to place blame in the right place. And learn how to complain effectively. Boy howdy on that! This applies to the larger life also. See this all the time.
For all the resources @ our fingertips.... some just can't READ, nor PROBLEM-SOLVE. Amazing!!
