I need help with my Empire Turf Zoysia lawn (thinning areas, etc
Comments (1)I was going to link directly to your pics but they are huge. If you can make them smaller (like 800 px wide max), then use the following code to link them directly The quotes are important. Your links are good, just too big for this forum. Looks like too much shade and/or water. Near the patio that could be urine damage. Usually it is a much more well defined spot, but your grass is so thin. Where do you live? If you live in the south, would you consider St Augustine?...See MoreEmpire Zoysia Sod not Greening
Comments (8)You might try Ironite to see if that will help out some. I just bought some (in 40 lb bags) from Home Depot, and put it on my new Empire Zoysia (a few days ago) that was sodded a few weeks ago in the Atlanta area. My Empire grass is already a darker shade of green (just days after the Ironite was applied) and is doing very nicely. I understand that Empire Zoysia really loves Iron, and have read that Ironite is a perfect solution in that respect. I plan to apply Ironite four times a year. Have others had success with Ironite? Please note that my sod was not in perfect shape when I installed it myself (it had some thatch and yellowing). I actually bought about 2/3rds of a pallet from Home Depot to replace an area of partially shaded Bermuda on a slope. The Bermuda was not doing well from the partial shade and erosion was occurring from a lot of recent heavy rains. Evidentally, the sod had been sitting on Home DEpot's lot for a couple of days because it had some thatch and was starting to yellow. I put out a 10-10-10 starter fertizer and watered it in for a few weeks (and it rained a good bit also). Then I added Ironite. I also had gently raked out most of the thatch a couple of times using a metal leaf rake. Now, the Empire is looking very good. In fact, I like it so much that I will soon add 5 more pallets (but this time delivered directly from a sod farm), and I'll get some help to install it quickly. I plan to till the soil and add top soil, humus (and lime if needed) prior to installing the sod. Anyways good luck with your lawn. Ironite might help some, but that one area where most of your sod looks dead may take a while to recover if not replaced....See MoreEmpire Zoysia Grass
Comments (17)Our company is the developer and patent holder of Empire Zoysia. We do not recommend a 1-0-1 fertilizer, but rather a fertilizer with a 1-0-1 ratio. An ideal fertilizer would be a 15-0-15 in the spring, or a 20-0-15 if your lawn appears to be lacking in nutrients. One way to get the green without the N is to use iron that can be found in products such as Ironite. Be sure to apply an insecticide such as Bayer Advanced Grub control annually in the spring to prevent billbugs and other insects. Empire is typically pretty resistant to fungus and disease, but occasionally in wet conditions problems can arise. If you see sudden browning in spots, it usually a fungus issue and a systemic fungicide should be applied and will cure the issue. The link I included is to the maintenance page for Empire on our site. If you have any other questions let us know. If you would like more info on fertility, be sure to check out the post on understanding fertilizer on our Turf Talk blog. Good Luck! Drew Wagner Sod Solutions Inc. Comments (16)Thanks for your reply. I'm using a riding mower and have been taking it down and bagging everything. I've removed quite a bit of old material since I hadn't scalped it last year and was cutting it too high. It's all being bagged and so far I've filled ~10 42 gallon lawn bags with material. I know I've got more to go. My riding mower has 6 levels, and I had been cutting it way too high at #6. Those ~10 bags of material is what it took to get it from #6 down to #4. Most of the linked photos show the lawn at level 4. I've included a measuring tape pressed to the dirt to provide perspective. There's one exception - To help suck up some of the grass from my driveway, I dropped my mower to the lowest level. In trying to avoid the car, I ran over the grass and really...really scalped it. It looks pretty bad and I hadn't planned on going that low. Maybe it was dumb luck though as it might help my scalping question. Question 1: Should a properly scalped lawn look like the level 1 pictures? Question 2: Once I get it scalped, should I have my lawn care company come out and apply iron, fertilizer, or weed control? Or should that wait until I see the grass come back? Thanks again for your patience and help.
