The guy who put our house together used Minka-Lavery brand lights for the whole house. It's pretty dated.......but well lit.

These are the outdoor lights I really like them. They have photocells & LED bulbs....I don't like the chandeliers we have. They're not glitzy, just not very manly. I'm just not ready to commit to a new look.

Ugh. The lights. I have those horrible "ceiling boob" lights throughout. Very dated and ugly. I had a couple replaced with plain led lights that are flush with the ceiling. It was a quick solution to a problem. The people who had this house before be were either very cheap or very overconfident in their DIY skills. Two of the boob lights fixtures FELL from the ceiling. My BIL,a contractor has a huge pile of those led lights and dropped by to replace them one day. I have light, just no character. I have basic ceiling fans in all the bedrooms and a fairly nice one in the living room. There was one in my laundry room, but it too fell from the ceiling. I found it one morning dangling by a wire for dear life. It was replaced by another plain flat led light. There are some recessed lights in the kitchen.

I would be happy with a chandelier in every room. Big ones. Sparkly ones. Pink ones. But for now I would be satisfied to get rid of the boob lights. Its on a loooooong list of thing for BIL to come fix when he can fit me in.

I have 2 rooms with drum lights in my house, which I dislike but just can't be bothered to change now.....I think those were contractor originals. There's a fancy chandelier in my bedroom which I didn't like when I bought the place, but it's growing on me.

I changed out everything here, so that every room has the same basic white ceiling fan. There are four or five months of the year when, with fans going, I don't have to have the AC or Furnace on and it's a huge cost saver. I would love to have sparkly chandeliers, but just can't justify giving up the fans.

The original owner of our circa 1960 "Pennsylvania Farmhouse" stopped by one day. She seemed rather appalled that the original blue and white and burnished brass oil-lamp-style fixture over the kitchen table is still there.

The work part of the kitchen has a fluorescent light above a wood frame, so it doesn't look as bad as you might think, though I suppose it is dated. But it's great light!

My son was dancing in the foyer and his hand hit the glass in the overhead light. It was a cylinder of glass and a replacement has to be custom made, costing as much as a new fixture of the same quality. Still no glass, 5 years later.

I really want to replace the ceiling light in the upstairs hall but am having trouble finding one that goes with the house, and both isn't junk but also doesn't cost a fortune.

Here's a funny one. The half bath off the laundry room has a non-descript, non-boob light. Fine, it's utilitarian. When we removed the wallpaper last year, we found that there was a light box behind the mirror, and behind the wallpaper! The previous owners had removed the light fixture, capped the wires, and just wallpapered over the box, then hung a mirror over it! Still looking for a light to put there. Or maybe we'll just hang the mirror back up lol!

The original brass chandelier is in the dining room.

The rest of the rooms have lamps, not overhead lights.

Overhead ”can” lights give me such a headache. therefor, we dont have any. I find it difficult to visit friends who have these.

Canned kitchen lights and tin chandeliers in three rooms.

We have pot lights in the kitchen but most often find the island lights what we use. I have a chandy over the breakfast nook and over the DR table. We have semi-flush mounts in the exercise room and one in the guest room.

There's something calming or familiar in my head about light fixtures that are all cohesive in a home. All different for their different functions, but still a family. I suppose that's the way contractors do it, I grew up in military housing so it's comfortable I suppose. When we bought this home all the lights were just WRONG. None matched each other, they were all ugly and some were not made for the purpose they were being used!! The builder was a factory facilities engineer so thought he knew best?? Well he must have shopped a lot of sales is all I know. First FUN I had was buying my dining room chandelier. It's tulips, waaay out there nothing one would find in a big box store. Then DH converted and hung what was a chained hanging chandelier flush in our kitchen so we have plenty of over head lights. When we re-did the counter eating area we replaced the UTILITARIAN outside fixture with four lights, taken from a matching chandelier DH took apart so they matched. We replaced the smoked glass FORMAL chandelier they had hung over the open stair case with a fan and light set, for heat control when using the wood burning stove. The bedrooms I have also changed out. No more $10 builders grade glass square fixtures. I love the crystals mini chandy in my bedroom!

I really, really want to replace the front porch wall lanterns with something smaller, frosted, low light, and add a ceiling-mount fixture, flush, so that the porch just glows instead of light bulbs in your face. Bonus if they have an option to be low-light most of the time, but brighten when a motion detector senses activity. Oh, wait, between leaves, squirrels, chipmunks, birds, raccoons, etc, that's probably a bad idea.

Downstairs, our lights are the 1940 original fixtures. Entry, living room, and dining room have simple chandeliers of chrome cones with custard-cup glass. Kitchen, bathroom, side entry have round drums of chrome and cut (pressed?) glass. They all "go together", as Arcy points out is a good thing. Upstairs is more of a mish-mash from a 1950's remodel and a few changes we made when we moved in, including a big boob light right over our bed. Not terribly stylish, but not in a public part of the house and very practical.

I have a couple of the disparaged "boob" lights, or at least boob-ish, and I am the one who installed them. The one in the small DR is semi-flush, replaced a cheap looking bright brass chandy. The current light works better because the center of the DR is the path to the FR, and I have the table off to one side. I also put flush "bowl" ceiling lights in the upstairs hall (a small space) and the spare bedroom - chosen because I liked them for the spots - in decor sense as well as function - better than anything else available for this 1941 colonial revival, or that I could afford at the time - and really couldn't put anything that hung lower or wider in that hall, because of the linen closet door.

In the recent decade though, I have seen some more modern ones that I like and that would look natural in the space.

I have replaced the porch light many years ago with a simple octagon similar to this but smaller and way less expensive - replaced one like this.

I've actually just replaced the 1970s era ceiling fan in my BR with a more updated look - but also with a bowl light since I didn't want to pay $100 more for the metal trimmed cake pan look. Also have ceiling fans in the FR and 2nd BR - they help so much in both summer and winter - both fairly recent, although the 2nd BR one has those 5 light, downward pointing lights that I don't care for. My DD like the frilly globes at the time (I've since replaced them with a sleeker look.)

In the kitchen I have ceiling LEDs - the retro fit wafer type, which I like very much; I couldn't use recessed lights because of ductwork and pipes in the ceiling - these work off of an ordinary junction box. 3000k, 850 lumens each - beautiful light, to my eyes.

I have some similar ones ready to install in the basement, if I ever get around to cleaning up that mess.

All of my light bulbs are LEDs now.

In my previous 1950s home that we remodeled everything was oil rubbed bronze. I was tired of that by the time we built 7 years later and I like to think of the new house as an eclectic mix of different finishes. I spent 18 months picking out our new ones so here is my detailed list :)

The entry has a copper Chandler with a central light shining down and 6 arms that can be turned on different ways. It's from the 50-60s and i found it in an "antique" store in town.

The dining is a shiny pewter crystal chandler that was in our previous home (my husband had picked it out and was the only thing that wasn't ORB).

Kitchen has cans and then two large shiny copper pendants over my sink and prep area. They are solid copper and were a steal from an English seller on Etsy. We did have to Dremel the hole larger so our american pendant fixtures would fit.

Our mud room, or "the Owners Entrance", has a muted brass lantern with wavy glass from the Amazon Warehouse. I had to replace one of the glass pains but was still only $30 all in.

Laundry, pantry and 2 walk in closets have smaller school house light fixtures. I also detest boob lights.

Front room has a fan with 4 lights. I really want to replace the lighting kit on it to something with covered lights. I do not like the harsh light coming down from it. But we mainly use 3 lamps that are on a switch. The Electrician was surprised when I asked him to wire for them since he hadn't done that in 15-20 years. No can lights in there.

The power bath has a brushed nickle wall light with 3 bulbs from Hudson Valley. Also picked up cheap from Amazon Warehouse.

The spare room is a large and thick crystal type ceiling shade that is very sparkly also from Amazon Warehouse. Was discounted for some chips along the edge that you only see if you are on the ceiling.

My Bedroom has a large central vintage brass/crystal chandelier and a second small one in the seating area. Another matching small one is in the bathroom. I bought them second hand from a private seller. Then flanking the mirror are 2 Hudson Valley shiny pewter sconces with large frosted glass shades.

I like the mix of different finishes. Has more of an evolved-over-time look to me.

If you haven't noticed I love the Amazon Warehouse. Kind of a pain to search but I bought quite a few things from it for our build to save money since I had plenty of time.

Edit to add: my home isn't an open floor plan but a ranch. Each light is in its own room.

Our sort of Japanese looking entryway light helped to sell us on the apartment. It's a nice apartment, but really, it was that first glimpse of this light that made us both ready to love the place. Above the dining table is a hideous brass chandelier that has been in my husband's family for years. Oh, well!

Large 11 bulb chandelier (one central downlight with 2 bulbs and 9 up lights) in the entry along with a similar style 8 bulb (up light) in the dining area, ceiling fans with lights in the family room, and the bedrooms, flush mount fixture in the room that will become an indoor laundry, pantry storage room. All are on dimmers and all are incandescent. Bathrooms have Panasonic exhaust fan lights in toilet and bathing zones and fixtures over the vanities. I have a pair of nice sconces and a matching over the vanity fixture stored away for the future bath remodel. Hallways have flush mounted boobs without nipples. Kitchen and garage are florescent. Kitchen flush, garage industrial. I have a pair of sun tunnels still to be installed in the kitchen with light units that will do away with the florescent flush mount along with a small schoolhouse short rodded pendant for over the sink. I am also a big fan of Amazon Warehouse deals. Never had a bad outcome. I started deciding on styles and collecting light fixtures for future needs when they started to phase out standard light bulbs. California was ahead in eliminating options, so I shopped Amazon and out of state dealers. Ditto for plumbing stuff. I have my own little warehouse.
