We have electric heat, but also have a wood burning furnace.
we use the furnace mostly when it's very damp outside.

Gas. The old house was electric base board and we'll never have it again. We were always cold and it was expensive! We put in a wood burner our second winter there. That helped lots.

Free standing wood burning stoves and a gas furnace. DH is a woodchuck and loves a fire. We had a heat pump but no one could explain to me in a way that made sense how the heat pump extracted hot air out of below freezing outside air and heated our house. I had it ripped out and installed a gas furnace. In our other house, there was radiant heat in the ceiling which worked fine until it shorted out and there was NO backup. We ripped out the ceilings and had ducts installed and put in a gas furnace. Never looked back.

Gas, forced air.

gas fired boiler and baseboard heating..i like it because you don't freeze between times as with forced air, and it supposed to be cleaner...downside? it's pretty hard to arrange furniture where you're not blocking the baseboard...we also have to run humidifiers...

We have a wood burning Buck stove plus an electric furnace and a couple electric baseboard heaters. We use the stove most of the time and the baseboard heaters which are in areas that the stove doesn't heat well. This time of the year we run the furnace otherwise it would get way too hot during the day if we were burning wood.

In our APT it is baseboard electric. We used to live on a place that had a wood-oil furnace, but we always burned wood as we had 80 acres of woods and in the middle was a large pond with Beavers. We had a nice partnership with them. They would cut down trees and take what they wanted from it, then in the fall we would ride out to the pond and cut the trunk up with our chain saw and put it in the barn to cure for a year. I have electric central heat and a/c, but I live in Florida, so only run the heat a couple of nights during the winter and the a/c only a couple of days during the summer - otherwise, we have gulf breezes/mother nature to warm or cool us!

Electric (baseboard heaters). I had an oil furnace (forced air) in another house and I will never have oil again. I hated it.

I have a very efficient boiler in my basement that provides me with baseboard heat in every room but the kitchen.

Just have two old wall heaters...natural gas.

This is a drafty old house, so to help with heat and cooling, I keep the two spare bedrooms closed all year.

The old house has gas forced hot air--worst heat you can have, IMO--hate how chilly, drafty and dirty hot air heat is.

New house has an electric heat pump (which we don't use), a wood fireplace in the living room (which we do) and a gas-powered radiator system.

It was really interesting this winter, that I could keep the new house set at 58-60 and be perfectly comfortable, but the 'old' house felt chilly at 65, because of how dry the air gets.

At both houses, I keep the heat low, and use electric space heaters if I want to take a little more of the chill off the room where I am

We have natural gas, forced air central heat w/a flow through humidifier. The HVAC sub for our house was an idiot, so we had to supplement the heat in two north-facing rooms by running tubing under them. A small gas-fired boiler warms the water running through the tubing. I love the even radiant heat in those rooms, but appreciate having the humidified air supplied from the furnace.

We have two sets of air returns in our walls, one for heating season (low on the wall) and one for cooling season (high on the wall). The supply vents are in the floor.

Where I am living now...I have none. I have some electric heaters but it is like trying to heat Brazoria Co., so when it is cold, I go to bed as early as possible. When I finish my house, it will have gas heat.

A gas furnace with hot water tubes running to a vent in each room. Just put in gas last September, previously we had fuel oil. It's expensive but keeps us toasty warm.

We are gas and we just sold the corn furnace this year and bought a wood furnace but it is not installed yet so we have used the gas all winter.

Central electric heat and ref. air.My house if total electric.I freeze DH out summer and winter.I keep the thermostat at 68-72 year round,sometimes lower when I go to bed because I can't sleep in a hot room.My bedroom has a ceiling fan that runs 24/7 summer and winter.His room was added on and doesn't have an A/C vent so the temperature is fine for him in the summer.He uses a small electric heater in the winter and it is so hot in there I don't know how he stands it.Plus he covers up with a thermal blanket and a comforter!
For those of you who have electric,central or space heaters,what does you electric bill run each month?

Gas, that's all I have ever had.

We have an electric heat pump which works great but we use the wood stove a lot, because I like to be really toasty warm. A heat pump will send out air the same temp as what you have the thermostat set to, I just don't find 68 degree air to be very warming! I like to cozy up to the fire. I just lit one, in fact- it's 45 now and dropping. And raining. Brrrr. Oh, and I use a heating pad in bed to warm me up fast.

Lilliepad- when we use the heat pump a lot, or run the AC in the summer, our bill runs between $100 - $120, and we have a 3 story home. I guess we are pretty well insulated.

Wood burning fireplace,but they don't really give off too much heat.

NO heating, NO insulation. We just have to dress warmer and put on extra blankets when the temps get into the 60's and 50's. Most of the year it is warm.

We have oil hydro-air. We used about 850 gallons this year.

Paid $600.00+ at end of Dec., $352.13 in mid-Feb., and $232.71 delivered on Wed. --- which will likely see me through till summer.

A few small electric heaters that I use to warm me when using computer, sometimes, or warm bathroom before bath (not much fun bathing when temp. about 60 degrees). Or drying out car's ancient electrical system when it rains, for its enthusiasm for starting at that time has entirely disappeared.

I'm sad that you ripped out the heat pump.

They're expensive to install ... but many people say that they heat well, cost little to operate, and last for a long time.

But efficiency drops off quickly below a few degrees below zero, if I remember correctly regarding the point at which effectiveness drops. In cold areas, many users have some supplementary heat source available.

Environmentally very friendly.

Have you ever used a gas- or kerosene-fired refrigerator? We had one in Korea with a flat tank of kerosene just above the floor, with a little lamp-like round fire-ring in one corner, venting into a stack in which there were coils filled with refrigerant, which the heat vaporized, and it condensed again in the cooled box, which sucks up heat.

I've got a gas furnace (125,000 Btu.hr) with forced air. It sure felt good when it was 10 F below one night. To economize, I close the spare bedroom, and partially close the heat outlet. That room will then run 10 F or more less than the rest of the house. I have the theromostat set at 68 F, but at the very coldest, I have to raise it by 1 degree to warm the family room where we spend a lot of time (that's where the TV is).

It was on nights like that I envied you folks living where winter weren't so cold. A zero night is do-able here, but combine it with a 15 mph wind and brrrr. It gets downright dangerous.

Having a highly reliable furnance is a primary consideration in my neighborhood. If a furnace quits at 9 pm on a winter night, you can be into serious damage by morning - think frozen water pipes and cracked stools and water closets. There is residual water in the washing machine (the pump and lower hoses).

When I need a warmup, I got to the computer room, fire up my 10 year old, 20 inch, Sony monitor and turn on the computer and equipment. Within an hour, that room will be 5 F warmer.

On a lighter note, however, my wife says that when I get to blowin' hot air, it aguments the furnace.

Natural Gas-forced air coming from a 40 year old furnace. I pay $106.00 a month on the Equal Payment Plan and always get a rebate at the end of the cycle.

Heat pump. I have an all-electric house.

Oddly enough, my electric bill on the equal payment plan is also $106 a month. :-)

This summer, however, I'm getting a pellet stove. I'm sick and tired of freezing my butt off with my heat pump. It heats the house, but it's simply not a warm heat.
