What type of light do you have above your kitchen sink?

My sink is under a window and there is a scalloped piece connecting the two side cabinets(not sure what this is called). I would love to remove it, but not sure if I can without damaging the existing cabs. What type of light could I use? (There is currently a flourescent one on the wall above) yuck!

I have two pendants and three recessed lights. My window, though, is a bay window. The pendants are in the bay well and the recessed lights are directly above the sink. We did not put in a valance b/c I don't like them either!

I have a track with two small heads. I don't have a picture right now because the electricians just put it back in yesterday. I will try to get one if you need it.

The style of your sink installation, is tile-in, and it appears to be of an age prior to the evolution of "sink installations." Today, depending upon your talent, any sink can be undercounted. There are two basic configurations of "tile-in" installations. Flat rim where the tile abuts the edge of the sink and the sink and adjoining counter are a continuous plain. And the configuration you have, where the sink is below the level of the countertop. You can attempt a refinish, get a good warranty. Were I having it done, I would remove the grout where the quarter round abuts the sink and after the new finish had been applied, allowed to set and fully harden, install new grout and plan to refresh or change the grout on the balance of the counter.

I'm new here and I need help. My family room is 17' long and 10'-9" wide - like a shoe box. You walk in the room and you see the far wall with one window facing the door. The exterior wall on the left has a 7' bay window. The television is placed on the left wall as you walk in (in the corner next to the door so it faces the far window). I have a couch on the long wall across from the bay window and two arm chairs in the corners next to the smaller window on the other short wall. The ceiling is cathedral so the room is bright but it's crowded. I am re-doing the room so I was thinking a grey/green/beige color (I have oak trim and floors) and I want to buy new furniture to provide enough seating for entertaining. Question- should I buy a smaller sofa to fit on the far wall (only 10' 9") and then place chairs on the long wall? Should I keep a larger sofa on the long wall across from the window and place chairs in front of the bay window across from the soafa (might be a tight fit). If I do that, what would go nicely under the window on the short wall at the far end (under a window). Confusing, but thanks for your help.

Jen, your oven thermostat can be recalibrated or perhaps even replaced, most definitely! IIRC you live relatively close to an urban area - try calling around to appliance repair companies to ask who in your area works on old stoves and doesn't just say to throw them out. Emphasize its sentimental value - if you don't object to a "little white lie" you could say you inherited it from Grandma or something. (Well, you inherited it from someone's grandma anyway, when you bought the house! Right? :-)) You might also want to check out The Old Appliance Club, which rebuilds thermostats and locates replacement parts, although you'll still need a local person to actually put it in. I have the hots for Mary Lu's sink. Big time. When we were starving college students, DH and I once rented part of an 1800s farmhouse where the entirety of the kitchen equipment was a freestanding double-drainboard sink almost exactly like Mary Lu's, a stove that made AuntJen's look ultramodern :-) a somewhat random old refrigerator that sounded like a jet engine, and a built-in hutch about 3' wide. That was all. No cabinets, no counters. We prepared everything on the kitchen table and stored the dry groceries on bookshelves in the living room! Oh, and the bathroom consisted of a toilet in the corner of the kitchen. Just standing there in the corner of the kitchen. LOL The week before we moved in the landlord boxed it in and added an RV-sized shower, which is all that would fit. The lady who had the apartment before us had lived there for over fifty years and was perfectly content to wash with her old pitcher and bowl, so landlord wasn't going to go fooling around in there. (I think she came with the house when he bought it!) She had decorated the apartment (except for the kitchen, which was from somewhere around 1900-1910) in 1940 and it was virtually untouched when she died in 1994 and we moved in.

What do you have at your kitchen sink to hold soap/sponge, etc.?

I use a "berry dish" to hold my sponge. I got mine at Kohl's. It comes in different colors and has drainage slots. I put it on top of my sink corner so that water can drain into the sink. On the other side, I have a tray in a similar color from Pier 1. It's very sturdy and has never chipped, so I went back to Pier 1 and bought a second one to rest my salt and pepper grinders on.

If you're worried about yanking out the valance, just get a new fluorescent fixture. My old kitchen had one of those with the plastic sheet over a very retro tube and it was nasty yellow but otherwise a great fixture. New diffuser and new bulbs (and maybe new fixture to get modern fluorescent bulbs) can make a big difference. It's actually a pretty good system as far as useful lighting goes, although there is no decorative element involved.

I skipped the valance after the remodel and put in a surface mount can sort of fixture (still fluorescent); in a more traditional kitchen I would have (and have) done a pendant because they're fun. You can pretty much put in anything with good lighting that won't hang low enough to bonk your noggin. Get something that makes you smile. With good output.

My kitchen sink area will have pretty much the same *exact* lights that were in my parents' 1960's house. I won't have a valence but the folks did. It comes in one light, two light...maybe three?

I had a similar problem with a floresent over my sink.
There was a stud right where the floresent was, which prevented me from installing a recessed can. I
found a small hanging halogen lamp at Home Depot for the
spot. It looks and works great, and only cost $16. It shines directly down on the sink and you hardly notice
that its even there.

I don't have a picture, unfortunately. I have a bridge cabinet over my sink window (a greenhouse style window). It's like an apron, only is an actual, foot high, cabinet that stretches between the uppers. It has two recessed lights in the bottom, that are housed in the cabinet. They're halogens, but I might change to incandescent. There's an insert that fits the same housing, so it wouldn't be a big deal.

I just have a 5"pot. Was going to do a pendant, but decided in my case/layout it would be a bit busy. Plus my ceilings aren't very high, so in order to give head room, it wasn't going to hang down very far.
