Do you have a storage cabinet above your toilet?
Comments (8)I love the cabinet you found (and monikakm found for less!) I have a similar configuration to yours, toilet right next to sink, very small bathroom. The wall with the toilet and pedestal sink is only 5' long. I am using this recessed medicine cabinet (smaller size) over the sink: http://www.restorationhardware.com/rh/catalog/product/product.jsp?productId=prod1292018&navAction=jump&navCount=1 I am thinking of having a "hidden" recessed cabinet built in over the toilet. I got the idea from another thread here, see link below. The sizes that are available are too wide, so I am going to ask the contractor to build one in, with electrical outlets inside. The contractor is supposed to start tomorrow morning, but he did not get back to me last week. I have no idea whether they will be showing up tomorrow with sledgehammers! That reminds me - I have to take some "before" photos - I am planning to start a thread, "Ugliest bathrooms." I think mine will win the prize! Comments (25)Thanks guys! ttodd - the bed did not come with the bird - I bought it at the North Penn craft show a few years ago - it is a concrete lamp finial. I never found a lamp that suited it, so I stuck it on the bedpost. Last year, it was bugging me that I only had 1 bird, so I tracked down the artist (he no longer exhibits at North Penn) and bought 3 more to match. So now I have birds on all 4 posts. Some days I like them, some days I think they look stupid, but I'm too lazy to move them so there they stay, LOL! movinginVA - our house is actually pretty big (3K sq ft) but our bedroom is pretty small - it's 11 x 14. I actually prefer it as it means our other bedrooms are a decent size -- so many of the homes we looked at had enormous master bedrooms and then teeny tiny kids' bedrooms - it was kind of crazy! Anyhow, we do a walk-in closet but it is kind of small as well at maybe 6x8 feet (though, coming from a 200 year old house where the only closet was about 1ft x 2ft, our "small" walkin is like paradise, LOL!) But we definitely can't fit all our clothes in the closet, so we use both dressers by the bed, as well as another big dresser and the chest at the end of the bed. I recently bought an armoire for the other corner of the room and while I'm a little concerned that the room now looks kind of heavy with 5 big "case pieces" in there, I decided I'd rather have the storage than, say, a chair or something in the corner instead. But I've been needing to change the curtains (they're now being crowded by the armoire) so I've been wanting to post pics of my room and ask advice for a couple months now. Your question is the kick in the pants I needed - I'll try to take some tomorrow. But in the meantime, here's a description - our bed is queen size, the dressers on either side of the bed are about 30" wide and that makes up the 11ft wall. The chest at the end of the bed is a huge blanket chest - basically as wide as the bed and probably close to 3 feet deep. I love it. The wall to the left if you are laying in the bed is basically all windows and the wall to the right is a doorway to the hall where the closet and bathroom are, so there is pretty much nothing on those walls. Then the wall opposite the bed has a window in the center (with a dog crate under it - ugh!), a large empire-style antique dresser (about 4.5 feet high) to the left of the window and the new antique armoire to the right. So again, two big hulking case pieces that combined provide a ton of storage (but probably do crowd the room a bit.) I will try to take pics tomorrow and post them, since I did want to get some advice from the folks here on window treatments. But thanks for asking!...See MoreDo you have a gap between the top of your frig and cabinet above?
Comments (21)It is good to have some gap because you never know exact sizes if you ever change out the fridge. In our last house, we bought a new fridge and had no clue it would not fit under our cabs properly. We had a vaulted ceiling and this was under the start of the vault, so we could not move the cabs up as they were up against the ceiling already. We ended up planing the bottom of the cab and it got shaved awfully close to the door bottoms. We were glad we could squeeze it in after all. Luckily, we had enough room on the sides for ventilation. In this house, the installer asked how high to install the cabs for over the fridge. I had them go up to the ceiling and we have a gap like yours on purpose. We also needed clearance for the cab door fronts because the fridge and freezer doors come up higher in the middle where they meet. Since our appliances are boxed in, I think it is good to give them room to breathe a little....See MoreWhat did you do with your walls if you have no backsplash?
Comments (5)We didn't put in a tiled or granite backsplash b/c we postponed it due to budget (plus I didn't know what I wanted). We just painted w/a scrubbable paint (BM Cornsilk). However, be sure you tell the templater that you will not have a backsplash...and keep telling him/her! Otherwise, they'll assume they don't have do that good a job of templating along the wall b/c they'll think the tile will hide it. Oh, and put it in writing! Even though I was very explicit and they had our design with NO backsplash, they still gave me a gap that was big enough to push my fingers in up to my knuckles...I refused to sign off until they fixed it. I now have a fairly small gap that black silicone (or is it caulk?) hides very well and also keeps water (and crumbs) from falling behind the counters. I have a black counter, so the black is perfect. There is one run that has clear and we tried painting over, but the paint doesn't "stick"...so make sure they use something that either already matches your counter or wall or that can be painted....See MoreRelated Professionals
