dumb question - construction question
Comments (10)Pam, If you're using the polycarb ridge cap with the same kind of corrugations as the panels, you need to screw it down like the sheets. Or, you can just buy lengths of galvanized steel ridge and screw it to the corrugations and use filler strips to plug the spaces in between. I've used a vented ridge cap on some applications too. It allows hot air to escape through non-leaking vents in the pieces. Easy way to crawl on the structure is to cut a piece of 3/8" OSB to just short of where the ridge edge will go. Build a "stop" out of 2X that'll screw onto the top plate or exposed wall studs to hold the OSB. Screw that to the OSB. Ladder up to the platform and lay the pre-drilled cap in place. Come down and move the structure down the wall 4'. Don't forget to orient the seams away from the prevailing wind. Seal them with some silicone. Depending on the pitch of the roof, you may have to put some thin battens on the OSB sheet to keep from slipping off, or losing a drill......See MoreDumb question about taste. Possum Purple vs Frederick (p. edulis)
Comments (5)I have the Frederick (from Annie's Annuals, so I'm sure that's the correct name.) It's about 5 years old and producing some fruit now - though not enough for me as I love it so much! It has the exact sweet/tart flavor I expect from visiting Hawaii, and eating things made from passionfruit. I would not want it more sweet. I am trying to order more, but it's out of stock all over. I am considering getting a Purple Possum, but not sure I will like the fruit as much, nor if it will be as hardy in my Northern California Bay Area climate. Guess there's only one way to find out! But the only place left will cost me $70 with shipping, so I am still hestitating!...See MoreDumb question about garden phlox
Comments (16)I tried posting a reply several times with embedded images, but it keeps failing. Let me try sharing a little photo tour of my phlox with you this way (hope it works!) Meanwhile, THANK YOU for all of these great ideas! I am now really excited to browse Japanese sickles and/or hedge trimmers. I had considered using my string trimmer, but honestly I doubted its ability to stand up to the tough phlox stems. I also love the tarp idea and will definitely try that too. Another idea I had involves our mulching mower. Last year I ran over some of the beds in late November and was able to get it pretty well cleaned up. So if I sickle/trim the tops and let them fall, maybe they can just get mowed up later this year and compost in place?...See MoreDumb question about gift cards.
Comments (45)Oh sorry - I went off in a different direction. I'm not a big fan of gift cards in general, especially ones that tie you into one specific restaurant or store. I've had a few bad experiences where the cards went unused - in one instance the restaurant closed unexpectedly and I still have one for the Rittenhouse Spa that DH gave me the Christmas before Covid. I can still use it but just haven't felt inclined to book it. Now that the kids are older we've tried to simplify things. They own their own homes and two have children. They have repeatedly commented that they don't need stuff. I don't have a problem with giving them money and we give them checks on Christmas and their birthdays and it is definitely what they want and can use. A few years ago one of the kids set up Elfster- an online gift exchange that his wife uses with her large, extended family. It resembles a Pollyanna - you're matched up with one other family member, a price limit is set and each participant has to suggest things that they would like to receive and they can even include a link to the actual item. This is the third year and it's worked out well and is helpful in eliminating the 'stuff' factor....See Moreamylou321
