How many here remember Kitty Genovese?

I remember having to read the story of Kitty Genovese in one of my high school classes 7 years or so after her brutal rape and murder on a neighborhood street in Queens, NY, in March of 1964. It must of traumatized me because I never forgot about her after all these years later. I have a vivid memory of how reading her story affected me and asking myself as I was instructed to do by my teacher. If I had heard her screams, what would I have done to help her? Would I have done anything, or nothing at all?

Unfortunately history has a tendency to repeat itself, only this time closer to home on the Market-Frank El in Philadelphia this past week. A woman was raped and brutalized for 27 stops, roughly 40 minutes, while other passengers on the train witnessing the violence, took cell phone pictures and video of it happening. That's what they did, no call to 911, nothing, nada. Thank God she wasn't murdered. My faith in humanity has hit an all time low, hearing this.

Please take a moment to think long and hard about what you would do if you were on that train, or a witness to any violence toward a fellow human being. Thanks.
