Yes. They’re wider, particularly since I retired and spend most of my time in running, walking or gardening shoes. I'm now very intolerant of formal shoes.

Mine have gotten somewhat larger as I wear slippers or go barefoot or wear athletic shoes so much and they've spread out...much harder to fit into regular shoes now.

I used to wear size 7 (men's) and now I wear 7-1/2, which is not much change. I still have a pair of shoes from 1970, however, but they are collectible. I also have riding boots from 1978, but I only wear them with costumes.

FWIW, my dad and grandfather were in the shoe industry and my dad told me what happens is our feet spread out with age - not necessarily growing.

And yes, I used to be able to wear a ladies size 8 1/2M, then it went to wide, and now I'm a size 9M, which seems to be holding steady.

In 1960, as a high school freshman, I wore size 4. Local shoe store had a gorgeous pair of sample shoes in red crocodile leather that fit perfectly, with a stacked Cuban heel -- I adored these dressy shoes! But by end of college, my size had gone up to 5, so that was the end of them.

I went from a size 6.5 to a 7.5. I read that this is due to the relaxation of the ligaments in our feet. Also it is due to the spread of our feet due to weight gain.

My feet are still the same large size that makes finding shoes a challenge sometimes. Thankfully for shoes, because of the increased body sizes of subsequent generations, my foot size that was unusual in my generation is now more common and shoes are a bit easier to find.

I'm still a size 6, I used to buy a 6 1/2 sometimes because my feet are wide, now I stick with 6W or sometimes a brand is good in 6 regular. I realize now I don't like the longer shoe to make the width fit.

I wore 6.5 for decades, now find those a little tight and comfort means a lot these days. And, after hip surgery, I will still find my left foot swelling a little from time to time. I buy size 7 now, adding that I'm often in a style with socks (like Dansko), not barefooted inside sandals or dressy heels. Gotta allow just a bit for those socks.

DH's feet have changed in that he now needs a wider size. He has a bunion on one foot that causes no issues if his shoe's toe box just a little wider. Unlike his sisters who have all had foot surgery.

Husband has always been 13.5. Try finding any selection or variety of that size in the stores. Especially in steel-toed work boots. Now he's a 15.5 wide. I have spent a small fortune trying to order different styles (sneakers, casual, work boots) from the internet, and then paying for shipping and restocking fees to return them when they are not the right size or fit.

I have a high arch...well, not so much now. I think that's why my shoe size changed from 7.5 AAA to 8.5 or even 9 Narrow...not that you can find many reasonably priced shoes by width. I buy Mediums and add liners. I also like the Scholl's rubbery heel inserts. It's my theory that women like to buy shoes because however much weight they've gained, their feet haven't changed as much!

I went from 7.5 to 8 after bunion surgery changed the position of my left big toe.

I started as a 6, but am now a size 7. This turned out to be a good thing as W7/M9/K13 is sample size for most footwear companies. I've done work for two different footwear companies, and was able to take advantage of this. On the flip side, I bought my son a ton of K13 samples, only to have him zoom past that size and barely wear any of them.

Nope, same size. 9.5 is typically too narrow and 9.5W too wide, so I generally go with 10. No growing bald spot but growing belly.

I'm not sure if my feet have grown or the sizing has changed. I actually have some very old shoes that I had back in the day that still fit my foot but when I buy new shoes they are sized 10. A long time ago, a size 10 was humongous on my foot. So, I think some of it is the change in the way that shoes are made and labeled. Your feet also get larger if you gain weight, I used to be really skinny but I am not that tiny little skinny high school gal anymore, the one that wore a size 8 1/2 shoe! UGH!

I've always had duck feet which are wide in the front with a narrow/normal heel. Also have a long high arch and short toes. I wore a 6 - 6.5 from age 12 until after I had my first child at 25. Then it went to a 7. Today I still were a 7 in most boots and shoes but sometimes have to size up to 7.5 to get the proper arch length. I can also wear a youth five in a lot of things.

Yes. When i was a teen/young adult, i wore a size 8.5 narrow. In my late 30’s I started running. Somewhere along the line, I recall probably in my 50’s I started wearing a 9 and by then narrow sizes were hard to find. Now I wear a 9.5 and sometimes a 10.

Of course almost all shoes you normally find are medium widths but my heels are still quite narrow while my forefoot has become a little wider. I also have a very high arch and it has somewhat diminished. I blame the size increase mostly on a lot of running and other sports, and the fact many ligaments have given way and my foot has somewhat collapsed. I can see it in my foot shape and toes. I also have a larger left foot than right due to longer middle toes, especially on that foot.

Another thing I believe is the inconsistent sizing and manufacture of women’s shoes. Where most were manufactured in the US or Europe at ine time, now we have shoes manufactured in many Asian markets with a different paradigm. I know of several brand examples I once wore (formerly made in Spain or Italy) that are now made elsewhere that do not fit me the same, or as well, and the quality also seems to have suffered.

When I reached my full height of 5' 6.5" I wore a size 8 shoe. I wore that size for the next 15 yrs. until I had my first child at almost 30. But then I stayed home for 14 yrs. to raise our 3 kids, and noticed my shoe size gradually increase to a size 9. Me weight has never changed, (other than in pregnancy) so that couldn't be a factor. I always wondered if it was more related to all the years I was home and not wearing dress shoes to an office. Maybe wearing slippers indoors and casual/athletic shoes outdoors all those years, was a factor? We know that foot binding (a tortuous custom!) forced feet to remain small, so likewise, perhaps constantly wearing comfy, soft material shoes, rather than a more structured, stiff shoe, allows our feet to spread out. Of course, if those who always wore dress shoes, also found that their feet grew a size or two, years after they'd finished their height growth, then it must be more of an aging thing, lol.

When I was working in footwear, we made separate molds for product that was to be sold in the Asian market versus a European market. They were a completely different shape and tall boots also had to accommodate a wider calf. The better brands will do this, even though it adds to the cost of production and means inventory can't be shifted based on demand. Almost all production happens in Asia, but the initial design including the mold design still happens in the US or Europe. We tried to bring manufacturing closer, but were never successful. The quality dropped substantially and manufacturing errors resulted in waste.

Lynda, there are still plenty of European shoe makers. I am partial to Paul Greene, made in Germany and Pikolinos made in Spain. Fancy French and Italian brands are not made for my ginormous feet, though.

Most of my shoes have Made in Italy on them. Used to get most of my shoes with Made in Brazil and they had all leather soles & uppers, they lasted much longer that today's synthetic materials.

Many people will pay a premium for a "Made in Italy" stamp on their shoes. The country of orgin is based upon the place where the final assembly occurs, not where the majority of the components come from. It is quite common for footwear companies to request the Asian factory to leave the outsole off and one seam undone. Then the components are shipped to Europe or the US for a final quick assembly. This also saves on duty as it is generally cheaper to import components than a finished product. Another technique is for the Chinese company to lease a European factory and import Chinese labor. Twenty years ago these were the tactics of the lower end brands, now even the most premium brands do this. Most of my shoes say Made in Italy because those happen to be the brands that fit me best and are pretty.
