But, I got a letter from SS today telling me that I might get more $$ if I apply under my SS# rather than my deceased husbands. Have been on the phone for nearly 1/2 hr & they are going to call me back next Thur!!! DUH!

I didn't even know we were getting another handout. How much is the gov sending out and who is getting one? Honestly, I haven't a clue.

don't spend it! treasury has already said there will be no raises or cost of living adjustments to SS for the next 2-3 yrs, no matter what. of course everyone saw the reports on medicare and social security yesterday....glad i was raised by CPA's who pounded into me that there would never be SS for me! sucks i've paid in for 27 yrs and i'm at the $2K payout a month point too :-/ ohh well ~ liz

Am I alone in thinking these stimulus payments are a bit foolish? How is it going to stimulate the economy if this is used to pay bills or put in a savings account. I couldn't think of why I was having so much trouble getting my checking register to balance, until I discovered the extra deposit. I thought it was going to be in June. I won't send it back, of course!

I don't think the stiumulus is the answer either Phyllis. But, like you, I will be keeping the money too. lol
We'll probably just pay bills with it too.

i thought after i posted above, that those checks are getting received by those drawing SS and medicare, just as the ending yrs for social security & medicare were announced. of course they say they will fix the problems but everyone should know better, we can't afford to.. medicare will be in the hole before 2010 ~ liz

I haven't gotten mine yet. I will save it. Doesn't bother me that we won't be getting raises the next couple of years. I get a COLA raise on my pension check annually and my cost of living just dropped when I refinanced my house.

Ok, from what I gather, these checks are ONLY for people on Social Security. Working folks got some sort of tax break when they did their taxes this year. I looked at several sites explaining it and that is all I can come up with. Does this seem correct to anyone else?

My SS is directly deposited, so I don't know if I got it today or not. DH got one in the mail which I don't understand b/c he does not receive SS, has never paid it, so I think they meant to send me 2 and accidentally sent him one of them. LOL He only paid SS about 3 quarters when he was in college and then paid teacher retirement, no SS when he was a principal. I'm gonna try to see if I can convince him this is mine. LOL Actually, he'll probably cash it and take it to the boats, and with his luck he'll probably triple it!!

The reduced withholding is scheduled to start no later than April 1 of this year. Note: Certain retirees and veterans will be receiving a $250 check sometime this year, however.

sorry i thought everyone knew...yes these checks are for SS collecting people and people on disability too i think. people who work, had the amount of federal taxes taken out of their check reduced. thou there has been little mention of this that reduction in taxes in paychecks may result in owing more on your return for 2009 if you were already cutting it close on how much tax you paid. it's really too bad for alot of people who may need their SS money that we did not put the trillion $$ surplus we had 9 yrs ago towards fixing medicare & SS and now it's too late. ~ liz

So are you saying??? that with the stimulus check, we won't get January's SS cost of living increase anymore?

Liz, do you mean that when I retire (hopefully early in 4 years) that I will not get SS? They just sent me annual notification a few months ago referring to how much I would be getting @ 62.

Got mine on May 7, the first day they were sent. Nice to be first for something.lol

At this time of year it will go for plants and bird food.

That is the best way I know to enjoy it the longest.

Deemarie....Yes, you will get your SS. The system is solvent for a few more years. Time enough to make adjustments that will not cause SS to expire.

DH is retired and we get SS.I just got a letter a couple of weeks ago stating that our $250. checks will be direct deposited before the end of this month. This debunks the "according to the last 2 numbers of your SS #" time line as mine is 48 and DH's is 89! LOL I was also notified that my IRS refund would be deposited on the 19 of this month and I got it on the 8th.So I guess,who really knows for sure? LOL
Deemarie-I think it is just speculation because of the sad condition of the economy.I started drawing mine 5 years ago at 62 even though I took about a $70. a month cut in benefits because I figured I might as well get it while I could!LOL Who knows what might happen in the near future?? I am almost certain it will be gone by the time my kids ages 48,45,40 and 32 are old enough to get it.

I am to get $250, but it is related to Soc Sec., it said I didn't need to do anything to get it. It doesn't say anything about stimulus.

Glenda...the second stimulous is in the form of less $$ withheld from paychecks...people who have jobs will take home a little bit more.
Since those of us who get SS have no tax $$ withheld, the "stimulus" we get is lump sum of $250. How it gets to you depends on how you get your monthly SS money. If you get a paper check, you get your $250 in the mail, a paper check. If your monthly SS is automatically deposited in a bank account, your $250 will be deposited in that account.

Since these $250 "stimulus checks" are going only to those who are on SS or SSI or SSD rolls, the government is using the SS payment method to deliver it.

Even tho SS sent me a letter I'd be getting mine by direct deposit at the end of May, I was pleasantly surprised when I got online today to see the $250 had just been deposited.

I will transfer that same amount to my little ol' savings account.

We got the letter that DH will be getting the $250 a couple of weeks ago. Good thing! We got a letter from the IRS 2 days ago that we owe $400 from 2007. Credit Union dropped the ball on this one, they were late (very) with sending a corrected interest income statement. Drat!

This stimulus payment also applies to disabled vets, which my HD is (thankfully, not 100%, but he does receive a check for injury)..anyway...he has not received anything yet and when I asked at the bank about it...the cashier said she had not seen any deposits for DAVs yet. Has any vet here received the check yet?
