I don't know why this popped into my head but...who remembers the "story" we all contributed to using only names of tv shows?
I remember I added to the ending of the boy saying to his dog "let's go home"
That was such a fun thread

What lovely nostalgic stories! My memories of a cold winter morning were of the rattling coming up the big old round furnace pipes as Dad shook the ashes out of the grates and put some more wood blocks on the coals to start the fire going ... the heat came more quickly if he'd bought some coal in the fall and put some on the fire at night, for there'd be more coals left. We cut our own wood from trees that were dieing in our woodlot. Then Dad went to the barn to milk the cows and feed them - as we got older, we had to go out to help, mainly feeding the cattle. We fed the work horses and the beef cattle and pigs (we didn't call them "swine") in another barn after breakfast - but went to school on school days. Eight kids in one-room elementary school, separate doors for "Boys" and "Girls", with toilets over a tank in the separated basement. We'd line up by the "Boys" entrance door from cloakroom and march around to our desks as the teacher played, "English Country Gardens" on the piano. The big kids helped the littler ones with their work, part of the time. Once a bit of a distant neighbour came into the little general store in the village when I was there, about 4 years old, I think and Dad was in a side romm getting something, and when he saw me is reported to have said, "No need to ask who you are - Dick Baker will never be dead as long as you're around!". Dad died 23 years ago ... and there was 28 years difference in our ages. When he was in his 80s, he'd drive 2,000 miles alone every year from the Prairies down here to London to visit old friends ... in 3 days. We used to say that he was crazy ... but agreed that when they're 80 or so, you may as well save your breath to cool your porridge as tell them what they should do. Did I say that? Brother said that he was too tight to spring for more than two nights in a motel on the road ... and when I asked what was the difference - he'd spend about three weeks in a motel when he was down here, brother replied, "Oh, yeah - but he gets a weekly rate from them!". I got my first horse for my 11th birthday. He was a bay gelding, an old cow horse, named Prince. Nothing fazed him. When you wanted to leave him somewhere, just drop the reins, and he would "ground tie"...wouldn't move from the spot. I used to ride with my friends, and they would tie their horses to my saddle and Prince would stand there and hold them all. I could ride him with no saddle, bridle, halter...nothing on him at all. Used to ride him to the post office like that. A lumberyard was next door and I would stop him next to some concrete steps on display for sale, and he would wait until I got back and got on and away we'd go. I used to ride him standing up...could do it at a lope too. My father nearly had a fit when he saw me doing that, and I had to stop...except when no one was watching. A few years later, I wanted to raise a foal, and I saved up my money and bought a mare named Little Maude. She was supposedly in foal but she wasn't. A wealthy rancher friend of my family, kept her all summer one year to try to get her in foal to a Thoroughbred stallion he had named Dublin Star, but she never settled. She wasn't old....she was ancient. My senior year in high school, I saved my money again and bought a big black, part Thoroughbred gelding. He was 16 and a half hands high. His name was Dan...and I added Collins to it, after my future husband. He was just green broke, but a wonderful horse. A few months later, Jody, my future husband, bought Trouble, a half Arab for my Christmas present. When I married, I raised horses and had many registered quarter horses. I will always have a horse, and today I have four horses. Two of them are almost 30 years old, one is 19 and one is 7. Here is their picture.

During the summer, our town in Connecticut had arts-and-crafts tables at most of the elementary schools (mine was just down the street). You paid a small amount of money to make things like the potholders, sew up little leather change purses (this was back when there was a Tandy Crafts that was part of Radio Shack, and those leather goods were popular). You could also make "hot plates" -- you'd get a square of woodlike material and pick up small tiles (like bathroom tiles) in your choice of colors and glue them to the wood. I know -- we were SO talented! A monkey could do them. Oh, and lanyards, too -- the older kids supervising would bring lots of colors of gimp for those. I can actually picture the finishing-up of the potholders -- one loop into the next one on the edges, until you got all around and ended up in the last corner. I think you had to knot the last one into place. I had terrible color sense in those days -- no flair for pattern. No wonder my mom didn't keep anything I made! (She was probably just glad that I was out of the house for a while, doing this and going to summer school for math and creative writing classes!)
