I remember most of these.

My favorite candy bar was the SevenUp. It had seven different sections and you could buy it in dark chocolate. I loved the coconut, Brazil nut and jelly fillings the best.

Natesgram, I was thinking rainy days at school and playing jacks! I lived in the country so there was no ice cream man, french fires or movie theaters but most everything else I remember. Fireflies were only in Indiana, when we visited relatives. They still intrigue me.

Another thing we always did as kids, that isn't listed, is jump rope. The kind when two people were on each end and one (or more!) person jumped. We'd sing all kinds of fun jump rope songs. I'm sitting here trying to think of them. If we whipped it really fast it was called hot peppers. :)

Not Packards (although my great uncle was a dealer at one time), or the Alphabetical exchange phone numbers, although where I grew up, you only had to dial 5 numbers for a long time. Our town had TV cable 40 + years ago, or we would not have had reception at all...we got 4 channels, two of which played the same programs after 6 PM anyway.

My mother worked a couple days a week, and we ate dinner at 5.30-5.45 ish. Most of my neighbors ate at 4.00 --we were decadent.

My great uncle was a Packard dealer during the Depression when they were in a class with Rolls-Royce. When he would take people out for test drives, he had to warn the customer that occasionally men would run out in front of the car, hoping to get hit by someone "rich" and make some money for their families.

...but it does have an alphabetic prefix-lol! I remember all except Schoolhouse Rock. It seems to me that Schoolhouse Rock is a much later invention unless there is one with which I'm not familiar. When I went to the movies as a kid, our theater had a machine that would fill a bag with popcorn for 10 cents. Can't remember how much the cokes were, but probably the same. Oh, and our phone numbers were MOhawk 4-1347 and LAfayette 5-4740! Great times growing up.

More than I care to admit. My mom and dad had a Model A up until I was around 5 or 6. By that time it had to be between 25-30 years old, but those cars lasted forever. I remember riding in that car. The rear tires were larger than the front tires for some reason...probably because we were the early post-war years and availablilty of goods was limited. Every time we'd go up a slight incline the car would be "even". Other than that, the back end would sit slightly above the front. My parents called it "Baby Screw Loose" because it had a rattle that no one could figure out.

Riding in the back of Grandpa and Grandma's car included a lap robe because the heater didn't reach there.

Walking to and from school, morning, noon, and afternoon . . . and stopping at the neighborhood corner store to spend a penny or nickel on snacks for recess. SO many choices, so little time (and money!)

Nobody I knew had a tv in their rooms . . . heck, we were the first family in my acquaintance who had one in the living room! We enjoyed instant popularity, among kids AND adults!

With a friend, riding the bus into town to visit the library . . . in fifth or sixth grade. Indiana small-town life . . .

Making hollyhock dolls -- entire wedding parties. Except for grooms: No black hollyhocks in our garden.

I remember most of them. Patty Cake was a hit and we had a song about a rain gutter? Itsie bitsie spider had hand movements that went with it. We ate sour powdered candy in a straw. At the grocery store there was a mechanical horse that cost a penny to ride. I used the built in goldfish pond as a kiddie pool. :0)

Confession...it's not my list, but I do remember a lot of them. I had totally forgotten about Heads Up 7-Up...I LOVED that game when there was a rainy day. In So Cal, it wasn't often, so it was a real treat.

We had a small B&W TV, and my grandparents, who lived across the street, had a color TV. We'd watch the Wizard of Oz at our house until she landed in Oz, then we'd run across to Grammys to watch the rest. It never occurred to us that we could watch the whole thing over there.

I remember a lot of them too, tether ball was another favorite and all the neighbors would meet across the street to see the Rose Bowl parade in color.

DISAPPEARING WORDS

I haven't thought about "fender skirts" in years. When I was a kid, I considered it such a funny term. Made me think of a car in a dress. Thinking about "fender skirts" started me thinking about other words that quietly disappear from our language with hardly a notice.

Like "curb feelers" and "steering knobs." Since I'd been thinking of cars, my mind naturally went that direction first.

Remember "Continental kits?" They were rear bumper extenders and spare tire covers that were supposed to make any car as cool as a Lincoln Continental.

When did we quit calling them "emergency brakes?" At some point "parking brake" became the proper term. But I miss the hint of drama that went with emergency brake."

I'm sad, too, that almost all the old folks are gone who would call the accelerator the "foot feed."

Did you ever wait at the street for your Daddy to come home, so you could ride the "running board" up to the house?

Here's a phrase I heard all the time in my youth but never anymore -- "store-bought." Of course, just about everything is store-bought these days. But once it was bragging rights to have a store-bought dress or a store-bought bag of candy.

"Coast to coast" is a phrase that once held all sorts of excitement and now means almost nothing. Now we take the term "worldwide" for granted.......... This floors me.

On a smaller scale, "wall-to-wall" wa! s once a magical term in our homes. In the '50s, everyone covered their hardwood floors with, WOW, wall-to-wall carpeting! Today, everyone replaces their wall-to-wall carpeting with hardwood floors. Go figure.

When is the last time you heard the quaint phrase "in a family way?" It's hard to imagine that the word "pregnant" was once considered a little too graphic, a little too clinical for use in polite company. So we talked about stork visits and "being in a family way" or simply
"expecting."

Apparently "brassiere" is a word no longer in usage. I said it the other day and my daughter cracked up. I guess it's just a "bra" now. "Unmentionables" probably wouldn't be understood at all.

It's hard to recall that this word was once said in a whisper - "divorce." And no one is called a "divorcee" anymore. Certainly not a! "gay divorcee."

Come to think of it, "confirmed bachelors" and "career girls" are long gone, too.

I always loved going to the "picture show," but I considered "movie" an affectation.

Most of these words go back to the '50s, but here's a pure-'60s word I came across the other day - "rat fink." Ooh, what a nasty put-down!

A word I miss - "percolator." That was just a fun word to say. And what was it replaced with? "Coffeemaker." How dull.......... Mr. Coffee, I blame you for this.

I miss those made-up marketing words th! at were meant to sound so modern and now sound so retro. Words like "DynaFlow" and "ElectraLuxe." Introducing the 1963 Admiral TV, now with "SpectraVision!"

Food for thought - Did something wipe out lumbago? Nobody complains of that anymore. Maybe that's what castor oil cured, because I never hear mothers threatening their kids with castor oil anymore.

Some words aren't gone, but are definitely on the endangered! list. The one that grieves me most - "supper." Now everybody says "dinner." Save a great word. Invite someone to supper. Discuss fender skirts. Someone forwarded this to me, and I thought some of us of a "certain age" would remember many of these "old" words. However, you may want to think twice before showing this (or sending this) to your kids, it might take quite awhile to explain all of these old words!

I remember most of those! A coworker and I were trying to explain S&H Green Stamps to a couple of other coworkers who are in their twenties. They just didn't get it!

Ahhhh yes! Those were the days when kids *were* kids! I remember my kids doing some of the same things, like playing outside until 10 at night, and not worrying about them being kidnapped.

Parma, rat fink~I forgot that one, but remember saying it. LOL And my best friend of 50 years who lives back in IL still says supper, as do most small town mid-westerners.

And then there were the 'grillers'. Those were the tough guys(and a few girls)who wore the leather jackets, and we would cross the street if they were walking on our side.

Moonshadow, yep, lighting bugs, and we would catch them and put them in a jar!! Now if I find a bug in the house, i'll pick it up and put it outside, even an ant.

I remember when you couldn't buy pantyhose, and had to wear that god-awful garder belt(no lace, plain elastic)and hose w/no stretch in them....but maybe seams.

I wouldn't trade those days for anything!(((()))))

Gosh, many are familiar to me,too!
I remember, most of all, spending almost all my free time outside. Swimming for hours every day and laying on the cement driveway to warm up afterwards. Playing baseball in the street, riding our bikes for miles and miles (without ever worrying about strangers). Playing kick-the-can until the street lights came on. Exploring the nearby woods. Building treehouses. In the winters we would skate on the pond a few doors down; build snow forts and have great snowball fights together. We'd spend days creating elaborate mini toboggan runs all around our front yard, slicking it down with water from the kitchen (I'm from Michigan and we had a lot of snow!). Thank you for the great reminders of days past!

The sad thing is that I watch kids that are my own kids ages and they play different games. To grown up.

Yes - I will keep sheltering my kids and trying to hold their innocence as long as possible as DH and I teach them so many of the things in the list above!

I feel like so many kids have forgotten how to be kids anymore.

The Dangerous Book For Boys is always out in our house.

*smile* Us too, patty. Out in the country where lightening bugs would light up the fields as far as we could see! ;) We'd try to get the most so our jar would light up the brightest. And when it was time to go to bed, we'd turn them all loose again. Simple pleasures, those were fun times.

I remember catching lightning bugs too. Such a magical thing.

Yes I remember almost all those! Especially catching lighting bugs! How about playing Ghost in the Graveyard and that God-awful Kayo drink! I use to love that.
