door at top of basement stairs????
Comments (30)red_lover - ours looked like that at the top and when my boys were young my hubby had to make a contraption to avoid drilling into the banister and then we drilled the swing part into the drywall on the railing side. I wish I had a picture but I don't. We weren't comfortable with a compression fit for DOWNstairs - think it would be okay for going UP. That said I think it depends on how frequent your little one will be over. My sister's kids are younger than mine (lives far so not frequent visits) and for her visits we never had a problem just keeping an eye out. They weren't really too interested in the stairs with all of the activity of the older kids going on....See MoreStair paint still isn't dry. :( Paintergirl..... ?
Comments (8)Ctlane - How long did you wait until you took the tape off? I had to use a utility knife (I did use frog tape) and it wasnâÂÂt as easy as I imagined. Still going to need to do some touch ups. I did post on the paint forum when I hit a month and it was suggested to call SW. It seemed to get a little better so I just figured IâÂÂd wait it out. Thankfully itâÂÂs only faintly tacky now compared to after I first did it. Our basement is below. Door at the bottom of the steps. We have a dehumidifier running in the basement. It was warm/humid here this summer but not in the house or basement. I donâÂÂt remember it being too bad around Labor Day, which was when I did this. The house temp. was set around 72-74 degrees during the process. ItâÂÂs been about 70 over the past few weeks. I did have a box fan at the steps at first and maybe IâÂÂll dig it back out. With three cats, when I had the big light and fan near the steps they were very nosey and wanted to walk on the area. Put them in a room during the primer and painting processes, put everything away and prayed theyâÂÂd leave the steps along. Thankfully since everything looked normal they werenâÂÂt interested. The can of paint says you can recoat in 4 hours. I was originally going to wait a day. About three days later it was still tacky and I was really getting impatient so I did the second coat while crossing my fingers. I shouldâÂÂve known if the first coat was still tackyâ¦.. I guess maybe it just needs more time. I probably should leave the tape for a while yet. I canâÂÂt believe I wore my sneakers last night while doing that. Stupid. One more question, can or should I put a coat of poly over the treads? If so, oil or water? (probably should wait until theyâÂÂre no longer tacky) Would it add extra protection or do you think itâÂÂs not necessary? Possibly covering up the scuff marks? Someone told me it would make them slippery....See MoreQuick q .... drywall vs railing for stairs
Comments (33)In our old house we had drywalled stairs save for the bottom 2-3 steps with a rail on one side. I always meant to have solar tubes put in but never got around to it. It was low priority since no one spends any time on the stairs, they are just a passthrough. But a bright stairwell is nice if you can do it. In our current home, it is also a drywalled stairwell, with a half, slanted wall at the first four steps on both sides...painted trim on top. We could probably open it up another 4-5 steps but it’s not worth it. Fortunately there is a big window just to the left of the stairwell at the top, so it is not dark like the last house. I agree that if you don’t need the wall space to keep it as open as possible....See MoreOpening up kitchen with staircase -- design help needed
Comments (17)^^ Lower level is basement; basement under entire house other than great room, which was an addition. I agree about reversing the stairs, but if I moved the landing in the basement that's going to be $$$. Maybe I could do a U/switch-back or some other configuration that leaves the below first-floor portion relatively as-is. There are rooms and hall in the basement, more involved than if it were an empty expanse of nothingness. It never hurts to get estimates, it may not be as bad as I anticipate if not too complicated to reconfigure on the main floor. The pantry is for extra items, I have a good amount of cabinetry in the kitchen for day-to-day cooking/prepping items, so its fine for me over there. I keep dog food, vacuum, cleaning supplies, extra food/personal supplies in there -- I guess it's more of a storage closet rather than true "pantry". But yea - maybe moving door of pantry to eating area would look better. Mud room also is laundry and our main point of entry -- no wiggle room to monkey with that, it's a squeeze as-is....See Morekl23
