Advice, please -- new orchid growing roots in air!
Comments (22)Hi, I am new to the forum and can see that this is an old thread, but I cannot see a more recent thread on this and I also have a keiki that has grown on an orchid about half a year after we bought it (I think it is a Phalaenopsis orchid, and it seemed to do well, it flowered twice during the first six months). I have only now understood that this is a keiki - we didn't realise we should separate it when the roots started growing - and now it's about to flower AND the stem with the flowers and new leaves on it is growing in the same direction as the 'air roots' are, and not in the direction of the leaves around which the new root system has developed, so it seems impossible to separate it. How can to make sure the plant will continue to grow? I would very much appreciate advice from someone more experienced with keikis - I hope the image is clear enough. Thank you! Comments (42)Yes, we plan to have a closet/utilize the space under the stairs leading up to the 2nd floor (this closet accessible via the study). No closet under the stairs that lead down into the basement currently. Can you fit a closet in this one? Only concern is this is the only real wall in the great room. Unfortunately we need all 3 spaces - formal dining (now serving as main eating area), study, and guest bedroom. I don't want books/computers/laptops/electronics in the dining room. I play the cello - need separate music space/area, so I'm combining music area (place store music books, cello, music stand) with a small desk/books located in the study. Both in-laws live out of state (as do most siblings) and for various reasons, we've had family stay with us for extended periods of time (i.e. months), so don't want to go into guest bedroom to access my computer, electronics, pay bills, etc. Live in northeast OH, so mudroom area/place for coats is essential. benjesbride - That floor plan you sent is almost identical to ours! Only difference is the right side of the house continues to come forward, ours doesn't - ours has to recede due to lot restrictions. If it helps, here's the topo (house on the pie shaped lot)...See MoreHoya starts rooted and planted, a question regarding moisture level.
Comments (13)Hi Aurorawa: I spent most of the day working outside. Today was just a beautiful, and warm day. Wow, I was so happy to see a post from you on my Hoya questions. Thank you for all the information. I have a houseplant file, on my puter, and I just copied and pasted most every line, to my Hoya file. I simply have to give this semi hydro culture a go, with a couple orhchids. This sort of project is just too fun. Oh, my hoya soil is a sad story. I mixed the 5-1-1 soil after so much excitement over it here. I did not find pine bark fines, and substituted pro mix. I know it was mixed with meticulous measurements. What ever I did, turned the mix into a sponge, that never ever dried. It was so weird. After repotting again, My Hoya are in about 1/2 plain potting soil, with the other half being perlite and chicken grit, with a dash of bone meal. I am not complaining about the 5-1-1. My mix was just a fail somehow. As for trades, that of course would be so amazing. It is always fun to grow a plant from someone you sort of know. I am not sure I have anything you will want but we will work it out just fine. How about you message me your fav hoya for a novice like me with a Carnosa garden variety, and a Crimson Princess, and we will take it from there. I love love the tips on managing cuttings. All I can say is thank you thank you. Your Hoya growing set up is fascinating, and so nice to see. Thank you for the tour. I would love a small small green house, but strictly to entertain myself. I have always assumed you live up north, in Aurora, Wa., Aurora. Our climates are a really tight match. Small world. Thanks for the great info, so much to read up on. Laurie B...See Morejane__ny
