Building a Home Design Dilemma

White interior doors, need help with hardware finish. NEW BUILD

Building a new home, Modern Farmhouse on the exterior (white siding, black window frames, black metal roof). Interior has white Window frames and white interior Doors, large black rubbed beams in the Great Room. All plumbing fixtures and cabinet hardware will be polished nickel. Most cabinets are white. Walls will be white. Using dark gray quartzite on kitchen and master bathroom countertops, super white quartzite on other countertops

Question: Trying to decide on

Black levers with black hinges on white doors
Polished nickel levers with polished nickel hinges on white doors
Black levers with polished nickel hinges on white doors

Would like advice and if anyony has pictures to show me I would love it! Thanks!!!

Sounds like you will be stuck watching television shows from the 50's on a television from the 50's.

I think nickel hinges and levers . I am not a huge lover of black hardware on white and nickel to me is a neutral like stainless . Not sure what other counters you will have. but I think when you ask this type of question posting pics of all the choices helps us .Photo

Trend, as far as I can judge, is gold, copper, and flat black. Of course other finishes are widely used by most. But I wouldn't worry about trends so much. What I would worry about-is how my chosen finish going to look like. For example chrome or nickel look good both in cheaper options and in more expensive ones. Brass or gold or oil-rubbed bronze can be extremely beautiful, but then they would cost more. And if they are cheap they sometimes won't look that great. I think some level of mixing finishes is perfectly acceptable, and can ever be extremely beautiful at times, but requires confidence and good eye. But if for example you are going with dark levers, black or bronze, and the hardware in bath is pewter or nickel-I think it will work. If levers are black and hardware is brass-would also work. Now, mixing "silver" finishes and gold ones-here I'd be more careful, because that's much harder to pull off. My preferred finishes are copper, polished nickel, antique silver, antique brass, pewter..all of these usually require special order and longer lead time, just something to keep in mind. I went with polished nickel in master bath-frankly, if I knew it'd be such a pain, I'd reconsider. As for the contrast-I think bronze or black would look amazing with white doors. Unless you have doors that you dislike so much you'd rather unsee them..:) I hope to see other answers here too, choosing hardware is an interesting topic.

If you're concerned with cost you don't have to hire the designer to help with everything. For example, you could hire one to help with choosing the overall look of the home such as color palette for creating flow, style of major finishes such as trim and door style, etc. Another option to use the designer for help key areas such as the kitchen. We've used a designer for some spaces in our current home (master bedroom and bath and sitting room) but some rooms we've handled ourselves (powder room, kids' bedrooms, guest bedroom and playroom) because we were confident that we knew what to do in them. When we put our house on the market we also consulted with a designer about a few minor issues such as what neutral color we should paint the rooms upstairs and which areas of the house were most in need of updating and how. As for doing the actual staging and updating work, we did it ourselves. Keep in mind that there are different payment methods for designers. Some charge per hour and some charge a percentage on top of what they source for you. Also, find out how and what they charge you for. For example, some charge for shopping for you even if they are shopping for multiple clients at once.

Thank you I'll check out the pewter. I'm not just going based on the range, I have a large (really large lol) collection of mid-century kitchen accessories that I plan to display in the kitchen/breakfast area. Many of these are shiny chrome, think Sunbeam mixers and metal canisters. I also have a lot of pink and turquoise dishes, colored milk glass and other pastel kitchsy kitchen stuff. Outside of the kitchen and bathrooms I favor more transitional decor, not modern or glam by any means. I do like some vintage/antique elements. I have several pieces of Victorian furniture in my living room and entry currently that I plan to use in the new house. My style is a a little eclectic, anything from about 1890-1960 and I like it ;) This post was more regarding door knobs but overall I have a bit of a design dilemma to make everything cohesive. At this point I'm trying to choose a good foundation to decorate around and I think I have done that in everything but the hardware finishes. Now I feel like I need to keep thinking. New lake house build: bronze or black windows with white interior?

I am building a beachfront home and we are going to be using Nuema viny impact windows. I cannot decide between black/black or bronze/bronze windows. I was told black in more $$$. The outside will be white/white with a light gray metal roof. The inside of house will be white with a sand color floor and will be luxury vinyl. The den and kitchen will have cathedral ceiling and the ceilings will be ship lap. Should I go with the black or bronze. I got samples of both colors. The colors are flat, not metallic... Need some help please!!! Here is a drawing of the house....white house/lt gray roof......

Mark - ha ha, I'm guessing you don't like a black/white home.

Patricia, I don't have any photos as we just broke ground. I've been trying to find photos with the different looks. I was thinking the black hardware on white doors would look like a checkerboard, but I keep seeing it online. That's why I'm thinking polished nickel which is what we like and I think they are more of a timeless look, but want to hear/see from others. Thank you!

Don't mix the hinge and lever color. If you already have polished nickel everywhere else, do the same with your doors.

Worthy: That was well said! I've been second guessing myself since I know that Black/white on a door is currently "in" but I really don't love it on an 8' high white door.

My previous house had "black" hardware on white doors, done 20 years ago, and it fit the Spanish style of the house. The hardware had more of a wrought iron look, than the perfect glossy black you see today.

Whatever you choose, don't mix hinge and hardware colors.
