Orange Tree, Yellow Leaves, dropping leaves
Comments (2)Hi, I have a washington orange tree(dwarf)about 4 feet tall in my backyard and i noticed that half of the branches were dying. It was healthy for a year and all of the sudden this things happened started 2 months ago. Most of the leaves turns yellow and small branches turns to brown. New fruits about 10 mm in size were falling. I watered my tree almost every other day. Applied citrus fertilizer and still not working. How could i keep my tree healthy? Thank you so much....See MoreDropping Leaves & Tiny Flies: Citrus Problems in the Midwest
Comments (9)I agree with Mike. Fungus gnats are attracted to peaty, organic mixes that hold a lot of moisture. The immediate solution is to use Bt, a safe, organic bacterial insecticide that kills their larva in your soil. You can use something like Gnatrol or even mosquito dunks soaked in water to drench the soil a couple times and they will be gone. You should know that they don't really cause serious problems for adult plants, but they are a sign that your soil is not the best. So, the long term solution is to repot your citrus into a container mix that doesn't provide the environment they love. Many people here, including me, like a bark-based soil. You could wait to do that until spring, but start allowing the soil to dry out more -- at least in the top couple inches -- between watering. Use a chemical fertilizer instead of organic amendments, since those attract fungus gnats too. Otherwise, it sounds like both of your plants are doing much better since you increased the light. I keep my key lime under lights 16 hours a day. More hours of light might help your plants. I wouldn't worry about the Meyer lemon producing flowers first. It's alive, if under stress, and will grow leaves soon if it's happy....See MoreCitrus leaves yellowing
Comments (4)Hi Kate, Since they're all over 5 years old and have been healthy all this time, I'd think the drainage should be OK. Unless some changes have been made to the land around them. Since we're just coming into the rainy season I'd go ahead and fertilize them well. When new growth pops out I'd give the trees a minor element spray. And a few weeks or more later give them a bit of magnesium sulfate, either as a foliar or a granular application. (That seems to green up almost everything) All my old citrus have been struggling since the bad storm years. Thought the end was near. I recently gave them a good feeding along with an application of that Bayer product and there's new growth looking better. Hope yours respond quickly....See MoreHelp! Comments (3)Gorgeous tree. A little leaf drop is common in the winter for container citrus kept indoors. This is particularly likely in northern regions. You can read into Winter Leaf Drop to learn more....See Moreiochroma
