Tub inside walk-in shower - do you like it?
Comments (21)I don't understand the "extra cleaning" issue. I have been paying a lot of attention to where shower water splashes lately because we haven't decided how wide a glass panel to use. It doesn't go up that high from the floor for me,but maybe other people are more vigorous showerers! And although I give the glass wall and door a quick squeegee, it has never occured to me to wipe down the shower walls after use (although I admit we did use epoxy grout in this one.) The tub in the photo above would not get nearly the amount of soap residue due to overspray as a tub/shower combo, so I don't see the maintenance aspect as onerous. But I don't know yet! I saw this same discussion on Houzz recently and most of the people who had this layout loved it as I recall, but there was a lot of concern expressed by those who just looked at it and imagined maintenance or temperature control issues. Would love to hear from someone who's tried it, though......See MoreTub inside the wetroom/shower area - good idea or not?
Comments (8)Hi Pennypond. I too was fascinated by this concept, especially as the size and configuration of my master bath space made it difficult to have a tub as well as a separate shower. The solution that let us have the features we wanted was a walk-through lipless shower to the bathtub. My bath was completed in April, and we are delighted so far. It's a very long story, but the bottomline is that the really hard part was actually getting the concept and design implemented! It turns out that in my city of almost 1m people, this kind of custom work, especially in relatively small spaces, is still uncommon. Despite a detailed contract and initial assurances from my bathroom design/build firm (one of the top in the city), halfway through the contractor got cold feet and wanted to change the shower design and put in a shower lip. There were also arguments about the adequacy of the waterproofing, problems with the contractor's tiler and with a glass supplier which at the last minute decided they couldn't meet the glass design requirements. The information on this forum about waterproofing and design, and resources such as Houzz and Paul Anater's blog were invaluable. My design is somewhat similar to the one in the picture. The tub is along a window wall, about 78" in length. I chose a deep soaker tub, but only 60" allowing a good size bench at the foot of the granite surround. The shower is along an exterior wall at the foot of the tub, so the bench is open to both the shower and the tub. The "wall" of the shower is a fixed floor-to-ceiling glass panel, plus a shorter hinged glass panel. The movable panel swings out 45 degrees, and swings in to almost parallel to the fixed panel. Although the shower floor area is not even 3 feet wide, the additional "arm space" over the tub, the long length and the open glass make it feel spacious. For us, it was worth the effort....See MoreGlass Tub/shower enclosure
Comments (10)My husband is English, this is the set up all my in laws have and I am not a fan! Yes water splashes out and that is not even what I dislike most. It is freezing while showering. They are so drafty and allow so much steam to escape that the fan needs to be on while showering( I like to put my fan on for 30 minutes after my shower to stay warm at home) which keeps the room from moisture damage but makes the shower area even more drafty. Full enclosure or a curtain for warm showing work best IMO....See MoreSoaking tub and shower in the same large frameless glass enclosure
Comments (6)We lived in Tokyo for a few years and one of the bathrooms in our apartment had a bathing area wet room. I think they are pre-fab kits, like a room within a room with tub and shower area and a door that seals tight with a gasket. There was a step up into the wet room. Luckily, I also had a daily housekeeper that cleaned whatever mess the kids made in that wet room! Imagine a bubble bath that can spread outside of the tub ... the kids loved it! Rest of the bathrooms had regular tub/showers....See Morearcy_gw
