Remodeling Design Dilemma

Railing & balusters TOO MANY!

The loft area has too many railings and balusters. All the woodwork in the house is stained not painted. So I don’t think painting the railings/balusters is an option.
Any new ideas??

You could replace it with a pony wall. at least on the side over the TV. Looking at the backs of furniture is already not "open", so the railing is not doing much in that regard.

That would definitely help. If I did that I might be able to modernize what’s left for railings/ balusters…

Hi, When I finished my cabinets I used a pore-filler so the stain would not go into the pores and add so much emphasis. The brand was called "Pore-o-pac". It takes a lot of effort to apply, but it keeps the grain tamed. Pore filler minimizes the stain's penetration in general, not just the pores, so you'll need a few more coats of stain to get it dark. Honestly, people were just hardier in days of yore. My very scary, steep, hardwood floor staircase in my 1913 bungalow had no signs of ever having a handrail. I installed one for ME, no kids involved. I had a handyman put up one that looked just like Marie's above. When I moved from that house, I took it off to get my furniture down. Pretty simple actually. To be honest I would not use a velvet or other rope. I need something to really grab onto if I slip on the hardwood floors; not something that could rip or pull away. Oh, I also found that investing in non-slip socks is a must!

The post I mentioned would not be at the bottom tread so the design of a continuous handrail would have to bypass the post to get to a newel at the bottom tread and there would need to be a guard at the new opening whether it be solid, balusters, etc. At first glance it seems a potentially messy solution. Perhaps the handrail could be at the other side and the guard could terminate at the post. The bottom tread should have had returns at each side. Its looks like a abasement stair in the entryway.

OK, you all have convinced me to eliminate the oak look of the risers. While I'm too conservative to paint them, I'm thrilled with the many options for stick on riser decals that can be readily removed, including one with the pattern I've been nuts about for ages! It's called Astra, here. BUT -- back to the newel post/handrail for the upper section of this stairway.....previous comments were that we don't have the open wall for the spindles and we have no place for a newel post. I need to understand if the change I want to make isn't feasible, when it seems to me like it should be...please helps!

Turn the entire thing to pony wall........add tempered glass "windows " strategically for some light.

Or space the ballusters and do the entire thing in tempered glass.

I'd be painting all the stained trim......

More to think about…thank you
I’d love to paint all the trim but this house is huge.. it would be 18 interior doors, 40 windows, 100’s of feet of baseboards etc…thought about it many times….

I like the pony wall, but would also paint the spindles on the other area white, leaving the stained railing and posts. It would blend in better with your walls.

If you need TV upstairs, wire the pony wall for it. I would replace all the railings with pony wall and have the narrow side as a reading nook with bookcases.
