How do I fix this weird fireplace?

So I just bought a house and in the inspection the hearth isn't big enough for the pellet stove insert, and I feel like the mantle is too high. Also, it's dirty and grungy looking. I don't want to paint it, I generally like the cozy country look, so I would like to add a craftsman sorta mantle. Any ideas on required clearances? How do I widen a raised hearth?

Mnatels usually do not go above wood burning stoves and if the hearth is not large enough then first you need to work on that .Waht is the electric cord for?

How would I fix the hearth though? Can I build it out like a bench? The cord is for the fan in the pellet stove, I think...

Please make sure that fireplace is stable, and wont collapse on someone, if it is stable, then I would use the backer rod like millworkman is suggesting above.

Grout is not waterproof, so a hole in the grout -- although it should be repaired -- is not a calamity leading to leaks. What prevents leaking is the hidden waterproofing under the pan...as long as it was done correctly.

Leave the mantle as is and put a tool set (or plant) at the left of the fireplace, as @palimpsest suggested. You could even mount a fireplace set on the wall using hooks or some other arrangement. That gets the tools off the floor and less likely to be knocked into (and knocked over). I mounted this set on our fireplace (43 years ago); I bought tools without handles and made wooden handles, then mounted them invisibly on protruding nails that I inserted into the mortar.

If you do build it out, you can sheathe the hearth with something like soapstone or dark slate. That way you don't have to worry about matching the brick.

I don't know how old that stove is but perhaps you can contact the manufacturer and see what clearances they call for. I wouldn't plan on major hearth construction until I was sure. Inspectors have been known to be wrong. (Clearances for the mantel would be nice to know too.)

Limewash it and put a chunky mantle where the current broken brick are up top now~ I have a couple brick fireplaces I have whitewashed for examples check out my blog!
