Calling All Cottage Home Lovers - What Interior Doors & Knobs
Comments (22)Oh, my3dogs--I just LOVE that front door. I have a 30's cape (unfortunately it's not in New England--it's in a MD suburb of DC!!!) but as a displaced New Englander I pretend :) Anyway, you've got me wondering what I'd find if I stripped the 70 years worth of paint off my front door (it's a beautiful door and we just added another coat of paint!) This may get added to my list of projects for a rainy day (or several rainy days!) In answer to the OP's question--I'm thinking a variety of closely related doors would be nice--rather than going with one style throughout. We're only the second owners of our house and I know the doors are all original--and we have a bit of a variety. Several with the barn door cross hatch look, most others with 6 panels..but our front has 12 small panes of glass and our kitchen door to the mudroom has 6 long skinny panes of glass. I guess what I'm saying is a little quirkiness would fit well :) Our hardware is mostly the original tarnished brass with a little glass in a couple of places....See MoreWant to help pick interior door knobs? Comments (8)We faced a similar situation with our house (coincidentally also in Florida). It was built in the '70s and had various "upgrades" over the years resulting in a hodgepodge of metal finishes throughout. Mind you, I am a-ok with mixing metals (I actually prefer it to everything matching), but it needs to look cohesive. We ultimately went with satin nickel knobs everywhere. My other options were bronze, but I don't care for the "rubbed" aspect with copper-colored bits showing through (which most seem to have to some extent), or matte black, but I couldn't find an affordable option I liked. So nickel it was. I honestly think any finish would work so long as it's the same on all interior knobs. When all knobs are the same finish, they don't jump out at you so much. (Note: our bathroom fixtures are all chrome, most of our lighting fixtures in the house are dark bronze, and they all play together nicely.)...See MoreWhich knob or lever for this specific interior door style?
Comments (4)Knobs/levers are sort of the jewelry on a door, that function. There are pros and cons to both. Levers are easier to open, when you have your hands full, for children and elderly people. Knobs are harder to open for children, small children will try and try, which is also an annoying sound. It really depends on what you need for function versus the style you like. Bead board doors can go many different directions, but if you have an older home the knob may look more appropriate, if its a more recent home you can go either way. No help right?? I have levers in my home, but I was really careful when I chose them. I had the problem before that when my hands were full, the curvy lever like your #2 caught me by the pants. However, my kids are grown and I now have grandchildren, and unless the door is locked the 3 year old can get into everywhere. We have a lake house where everyone gathers for extended time periods, I changed out the levers for knobs so the 3 yr.old can't get into everything, but he tries and tries, that is an annoying sound....See MoreOk to mix interior doors styles? Comments (4)I wanted to do something different because those double doors are right in the middle of the wall in the center of the kitchen. I like the french country farmhouse look which is why I picked those. Do you think something more farmhouse like these would work? I'm worried doing shaker, but not 2 panel like my powder room door will look like I tried to match but couldn't. I wish I could see some pictures of spaces with different types of doors in them but I can't find any! Maybe that means Patricia is right and I should just make them all the same!...See Morepalimpsest
