anyone ever moved a wooden shed?
Comments (11)Thanks - for the bobcat info especially! I *think* we've decided to try rolling it along on pipes or logs, but if we could get a bobcat to pick the whole caboodle up that would be fantastic. It turns out that the new location is *slightly* uphill, and the finished site is therefore on a gentle grade, so we'll have to do some shoring up at the front of the shed. We went out and bought two automotive jacks - a trolley and a bottle - and so far have been using the trolley to lift the corners up gradually. It turned out the base of this shed was BURIED about a foot or so into the ground! We basically had to excavate trenches around it to get the jack underneath the structure. What a pain. At this point we've raised the whole thing up just to aboveground level and rain has kept us from finishing the job (have to fill the trenches in to prevent cave-ins when wet). Also because of the burial, the floor will need to be ripped out and replaced, as will (I'm sure) the joists and the sill on two sides. I confess that as an amateur carpenter I'm actually enjoying this - a LOT more fun than renovating the house you're actually living in!...See Morewooden garden shed - gravel or timber foundation
Comments (3)Somewhat depends on your soil conditions. If sandy and well draining, you could put the timbers on the ground. If the soil has lots of clay and doesn't drain well, the gravel would be in order. I build a 8x12 shed with a regular floor system (rim joists and floor joists) on top of 3 rows of railroad ties. I did put in a couple of inches of sand underneath the ties for drainage even though ties are heavily treated. Also made leveling much easier....See MoreRotten Wood Siding Remodel for 1970s Shed Style

Comments (23)Two comments stand out. First, "it doesn't rain much here"; second, "I assume this slope has survived ok for the past 70 years". The rain issue - if you are in a region which is on the dry side now, a heavy rainstorm could cause a flash flooding issue. Second, as with infrastructure which is 70 years old, if maintenance is not performed - or an inspection by a civil engineer at the least - you could have a slope failure. It is hard to know what type of weight is above the wall or if structural changes have taken place at the properties above you which could cascade down to you. I would have a professional (engineer, not landscaper) assess the site to point out possible issues. If you rebuild any part of it, I would incorporate some type of drain/ditch/trench along the bottom of the wall to help divert possible runoff from running into your house. If you do rebuild, at least a couple of stepped terraces would seem prudent. Then, I would replant with something native that would be beneficial for the slope stability. Not knowing your region, I couldn't begin to make a suggestion. But deep roots, ability to withstand drought, lower in height, and spreading should be qualities to look for in a shrub. You can always intersperse clumps of colorful perennials for pollinators amongst low growing greenery....See Moremorethanhome
