For Red - My Bedroom update
Comments (18)Funkyart, I don't think you are being a baby or unreasonable at all over something that was so exciting to look forward to, yet such a disappointment when the color and the alterations were not what you paid for. Even when something is a 'deal' it's hard to get past it if you feel that you were not well-treated. Look at all the people online who have had a friend or relative give them a super price break on tiling, or flooring, or painting, and then the job is not as promised. A deal is only a deal when it makes you happy at the end. And when you pay full price, it's a bitter blow. Many here think your bed is gorgeous. Well, that is cold comfort when You yourself were looking for something just a little different. I know how this feels. I've had similar experiences, and they leave a bitter taste on the tongue, long after the initial disappointment. So, now you just need to dress the bed. I do think that if you get your entire room looking beautiful and feminine and amazing, you will come to terms more with the one aspect that is not exactly right. Try to think of the bed as a gift--a piece that was given to you by a dear friend.......not just what you would have chosen for yourself, but really pretty and something that will be amazing when you finish with it. And if you think you would love the distressed black/brown finish, then start pricing that now. Believe me, if you had the $$ to get the painting done, sent it out to be re-made, and got it back looking gorgeous.........you would not be still kicking over the paint finish. You would be wondering why you waited. It's just like these guys and wood cabinets. They fight women who want to paint their outdated kitchen cabinets because..... "It's real wood!!! for goodness gosh sakes!! You can't paint wood! Sacrilege!! But I have a News Flash. You CAN paint wood. And if it's Your wood cabinets, and YOU don't like them, and YOU can't make your kitchen look pretty while you stare into the depths of their woodiness, then, you most certainly CAN paint them! Really. Sometimes you just have to bite the bullet and fix what's broken, even if someone else doesn't get it.... Red...See MoreFinally...Update on my bedroom
Comments (37)Your money, but I guess I donÂt see spending that kind of money for something that is just about a look, if you are suggesting that it wonÂt really be used. Remember, your room is YOUR design - be inspired by the pix you posted, but donÂt feel bound by it. I would rather see you spend money on a pair of great euroshams and a decorative pillow, or a chair for the corner. If all that you want is a folded comforter on the end of the bed, you should be able to find one for a much more reasonable price. As for what to put in it, I think you need to be careful - stuffing it with a duvet and folding it might end up with a big ivory lump at the end of the bed. And considering the look you want, I would not do a full/queen, I think it will be too big. I believe you said that your mom sewed the curtains (nice job!) so why not buy two twin sheets in a pretty shadow stripe, have her sew on two bands of trim; one blue, one brown, perhaps, using pre-made trim, or even a single wider band of the leftover fabric from the drapery - now that would be a custom look! Do that on the sheet that will be the top of the duvet cover, then sew them together to make the cover. Add some pretty mother of pearl buttons for the closure. Stuff with a cheap white twin comforter (not too fluffy) and call it a day? If she could use another matching sheet to make a couple of euro shams and add a button in the center of each covered in the drapery fabric, youÂd be good to go! As for matching the coverlet on the bed, you donÂt really want to do that - it isnÂt that way in your inspiration pix, and having some shades of color ties everything together and gives the room depth....See MoreBM bright greens for tween daughter's bedroom?
Comments (15)My experience with helping my two DD's redecorate their rooms, is that often times they lack an understanding of the big picture and just focus on the paint, not thinking of how this ties in with their bedding, WTs, and other stuff. I am somewhat in between the two camps: it's her room, let her pick and choose something that is aesthetically appealing. My 16-year-old DD craves color and always has. I now see this is not a fad, but her personality. I've read some other posts on the recent neutrals thread about adults who crave color and others who like the visual calm of a neutral palate. It's a personal choice, neither is wrong. It took me several attempts and compromises to finally accept her desire for color and this is what we finally came up with. I helped her to develop a vision for her room and showed her how we could balance out the saturated turquoise walls with B&W accessories and with a touch of lime. Use this as an opportunity to bond with your DD over her mini-room makeover and make it into a room she will feel good about and proud to have her friends over. As part of this, also consider the other furnishings in the room. Will she be getting new bedding, WTs and other accessories as well? If so, start with that. Then based on that, pick 3-5 colors that you think are good candidates based on what you think would compliment her decor and what you know about her desire for color, get sample pots and paint on the wall and let her choose from those. It helps a lot if you can find an inspriation photo and work from that. Perhaps something like this? I find Pottery Barn teen and even JC Penney's to have good pictures of rooms....See MoreSurprise Bedroom Makeover for Tween
Comments (18)the bed is cute. I'd replace the rest of the furniture if possible. Craigslist furniture paint and new pulls will go a long way. If you want to spend a little more on a dresser. Ikea has a fabulous Hemnes dresser. It's large and $250 [often on sale] and is actually great quality. I'd also replace the ceiling fan with a fun light. [Amazon, Ikea, home Depot]. Add cute curtains and wall decals, a pretty comforter and throw blanket and it could be fabulous. we did my daughter's room when she was 13. she told me colors and helped pick out fabric and the rest I did. She loved it. She did tire of the colors quickly so I was glad that was easy to change. [Pink/Green]. I had done bedding in a pink/green/black print. Hindsight I would have gone white and used those colors as accent pillows, etc. Thankfully I went neutral on furniture and walls with just accents in her colors [the decals were pink green black dots] She took down decals as she got older except for the wall saying which is still there [she's 20 now]. 'Be your own kind of beautiful. For walls I'd do a bulletin board idea that she can put pictures, cards, etc. on. A couple cute canvases. I also recommend something in her initial. I went to Hobby Lobby and bought a large Letter and used mod podge and added various pictures of her in B&W. Also a full length mirror from walmart [$20] and a bean bag or convertible chair, etc. for lounging. When I did my other daughter's tween/teen room I focused on white bedding with accent colors in the pillows. Her room worked better for longevity. A few canvases on the wall. Her initial in pictures like her sister; a photo pin board and voila. Again make sure it grows with her so keep the colors to accents and theme to a minimum [if she loves giraffes for example don't do giraffe everything, get a canvas and maybe a little statue for dresser but the rest not giraffe lol]. Also look at pinterest for ideas. I think it's great to talk budget with her too and let her have fun finding deals and learning how to buy within a budget. have fun. it goes so fast.
