Windows Design Dilemma

Window treatment ideas please!

I am converting a study into a bedroom. It has a vaulted ceiling and a large window. I’m trying to find the best, most cost effective way to block the light. Custom shades/blinds are not an option, unfortunately. This is a street facing room, so need to have something white on street side.

I would put a rod across the top HIGH, just below the crown moulding and hang simple Grommet Drape Panels of your choice (I'd choose a color similar to the wall color).

at least x4 50" wide panels for fullness.

Open/stack to right side ... if you need white for the streetside, line them with white. (Then you can use any pattern you'd like)

Painter is coming Tuesday morning so curtains had to come down anyways. I totally agree that the curtains were way too dark – and your Eye was drawn to them. Never liked them from the day I put them up, but somehow they have managed to remain hanging there for two years. :(. Definitely will go more of a neutral color on the next ones if I do decide to get side panels. This is where I go back-and-forth and can't decide. I think I personally like the look of the window exposed – with maybe just blinds but don't know if it gives the room a "homey" look. As mentioned earlier the window is a very large 10 foot window – and you definitely feel a draft during the winter so i need to put something up. Uggghh- Interior decorating is certainly not one of my strengths and causes me stress!

Hi Lynnea, apologies for the delay. I created a 3D version of your room based on the plan you provided. Let the room look n feel open and spacious.You can have the main seating area in the fireplace room. I placed an open tall unit in the corner to make use of the space.The TV unit is placed on the wall opposite to the sofa so it can be viewed from any part of the room. If you can get rid of the built in, it would be better. If not you can use the space to place books and decor items. Add a chair, floor lamp and plant to create a reading space. If the TV is placed inside the built-in, watching TV from the far end of the room may not be very comfortable. This layout creates 2 separate areas that can easily be used as one. Hope this helps. We could work on more layouts too if you'd like any changes.

I'm wondering if there's another idea I'm not considering. Are you open to painting the room (including the ceiling) a dramatic, dark color? In my first house, my husband and I painted our vaulted master bedroom a deep cool green (kept the trim white), and we *loved* it. We were pleasantly surprised at how much it darkened the room at night, something we hadn't even considered, but were thrilled with. I also really like curtains, and if it were me, I'd mount a single rod over the tallest window, extending it 8"-12" past each flanking window. Color would depend on the look you were after. Thoughts? :-)

Hi Tia and thank you. No… we don’t need privacy (just the neighborhood kid who likes to peek in the windows - but he’s been warned🥴). Perhaps if I change out the sconce lights (for something with a bit of pizazz) that would help. They were an impulsive buy and must go anyway.

Yes, just to the floor, leave the blinds, if you like them, they add texture.

I'd use a rod halfway between the crown molding and the top of the window molding, with lined drapes on small rings. To me, grommet drapes look like shower curtains.

Do not have the drapes touch the floor -- have them hover just above it.

Another option might be to add a tinted film to the upper windows -- sunglasses for windows and keep your blinds or use shades on the lower windows.
