With that width the most expensive item will be the rod. If she wants to save some $$, she could buy a closet rod from Home Depot and have it cut to length. Then paint, or stain it, add finials on each end and use some rings with clips to hang her curtains. She could use the bracket linked below, and for her curtains buy some sheets from Tues. Morning (or any other discount store) cut to length and use fabric glue to hem, if she doesn't sew, and then hang the sheets using rings with clips. If you catch JCP during a sale she can save even more. With how nice your home looks and what appears to be a good amount of window frame depth I would, if I were you, install interior window shutters. I'm a huge fan of plantation style, but traditional shutters would look amazing as well if you prefer smaller louvers. If you prefer stock size panels you may want to check into www.shutterland.com. They have great shutters, both Traditional and Plantation. Also, they come unfinished, so that really keeps the price down. If you like Romans, take a look at jcp.com. They have some double romans (I got Spencer II) so there is a sheer behind the light-filtering shade, operate independently. The cords can be a hassle (2 sets) esp. on the 72" long ones I got for my slider. But on normal windows they're OK. I really liked the "double Roman shades" they had last year (no name) for my BR, DR, and study, but they don't seem to have the same ones. The headrail was slightly different from the Spencer II. I think the last time I visited the website they might have had a new (Jackie?) roman that might have been a double too, in an ivory color that might look nice in your kitchen. HTH. Sheers down

What I did in my bathroom at the old house (how I wish I had pictures of the place to show you) was to create my own "tension rod" using small L hooks and cording, top and bottom mounted to the window itself, and then gathered a lace panel onto it for privacy. So the lace panel went up and down as the window went up and down. It allowed full view through the top, and filtered light and privacy through the bottom. It was a small window though so the cording worked fine. They also make slender rods that you can use instead of the cording. In case of the center window, it looks like there is enough trim to use a spring-loaded tension rod, top and bottom, which is available up to 90" long (amazon, bed bath beyond, etc.) In terms of the lace panel, for a lot of privacy, get it 2 1/2 to 3 times as wide as the window so it gathers fairly densely. You could also use sheers instead of lace for a different look...it probably wouldn't need to be as densely gathered. Or here they used a light weight coordinating fabric. You could look into using a beaded curtain a la hippy days...in glass or bamboo. You could look into a wooden screen and depending on how handy you or someone you know is, could mount it to the lower part of the window...maybe get a larger one that can be cut and fit to size.... or it looks like you have room to put a raised planter box there and fill it with live or "everlasting" greenery to provide the privacy on the inside instead of the hedges on the outside.
