Need ideas for window treatment of big picture window...Pics

We are in the middle of a kitchen renovation and I am in need of some ideas for window treatments of a very large picture window. I don't want to block any of the natural light that the window provides since it is the only window into the extended kitchen/wet bar area. However, it opens up onto a side street where you can see the entire first floor at night if you were looking in from the outside, so privacy is definitely an issue as well. What could I use that would not block the light but also provide privacy? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated since I must have missed the "design" gene at birth and can't really think of anything!

Cellular shades or roman shades mounted up high that, when open, will completely clear the window.

Thanks Gracie. I was kinda leaning towards roman shades as well because I wanted some kind of fabric in that area to bring out some color since the cabinets are going to be black and white.

If you decide on a woven wood, to determine the height to mount it you should first find out what the drop is or how much gather it has when drawn up. You'll want to mount it high enough so that the material doesn't cover up too much of your window when drawn up. I have some pics on my blog with links to many more pics. So doesn't anyone think panels would look good? My neighbor thought they would look nice and the Ethan Allen decorator agrees, I was really just hoping someone had some creative ideas as to how I should hang them. I do agree that 4 panels might not look right because of the different size windows. I really don't think the upper windows will be a problem as there is enough wall space separating them. So if you were going to hang to panels, how would you do it? I would love some pictures for inspiration.

We need window treatments for privacy in the marina, and mostly for sun suppression. The amount of heat from the sun shining in is tremendous. Light colored window treatments will reflect quite a lot. Limo tint. You mean like they use on auto windows so you can't see in? Can you see out?

Are you doing all individual windows with interior mounts in the bedrooms, or thinking of exterior mounted for the windows combined? Wood blinds are very heavy, and will have a huge stack at the top when fully up. Just something to consider. Maybe you're planning to keep them down all the time, but you will lose a lot of light that way. Have you thought about top down bottom up blinds for the bedroom, to keep some light but still have privacy?

You could also get shades that are able to stack at the top of the window or at the bottom of the window. If you cover the bottom part of the window but leave top open, the light comes in but you have privacy. I like wood blinds too. You open them and slant them so that the light comes in but looking in is blocked.

You know, 2 1/2 inch window blinds really do not block any light if they are fully opened. Leave them opened during the day, and close them at night. That's what we do in our family room.

If you like Romans, take a look at jcp.com. They have some double romans (I got Spencer II) so there is a sheer behind the light-filtering shade, operate independently. The cords can be a hassle (2 sets) esp. on the 72" long ones I got for my slider. But on normal windows they're OK. I really liked the "double Roman shades" they had last year (no name) for my BR, DR, and study, but they don't seem to have the same ones. The headrail was slightly different from the Spencer II. I think the last time I visited the website they might have had a new (Jackie?) roman that might have been a double too, in an ivory color that might look nice in your kitchen. HTH.
