need ideas for hanging window treatments

Hi I am new to this forum and have been impressed with the ideas and generosity of help from those who frequent here. I am redoing my family room and am trying to decide on how I want to hang the silk panels I plan to make. I have posted a description of what I am doing with the room, in a different post regarding paint color (SW Bagel is what I am considering) but I am also trying to decide if I want to make 2 panels for the outside of the windows only, or if I want to make 4 and place them between the windows as well or if that may be too busy with the sectional in front of the windows and the woven wood blinds already there. I was considering just the two panels hung from some sort of finials or knob type things, but can not find any pictures of this look. does anyone have any photos of this? I am open to other suggestions as well. I am trying not to look too formal, but I did love the photo canobeans posted of her dining room drapes. and I realize silk drapes are going to be somewhat formal. I am including some pictures and a link to an album with more. Ignore the strange furniture arrangement and the mess. I was trying to recreate the footprint of the new sectional.

Here is the window-- I want to bring the eye down and will not be putting any fabric on the upper windows.

here is a link to an album with more pictures if it helps, I have included pictures of my fabrics, the tiny sliver is the sectional fabric, the stripes are the silk for the drapes, the others are pillow fabrics.

I would love any ideas anyone has for the windows, or anything really.

Kathy, your room is gorgeous! I looked at all your pictures and was swooning the whole time. I am stumped about window treatments but I can't wait to hear what others come up with. Allie

Personally, I think that since the side windows are so skinny, if you put panels on either side of the middle window it wouldn't look right. Maybe have a valance all the way across w/ the knobs like on the Pate Meadows website and a panel on either end?

I would make a cornice out of foam insulation board or plywood in the arch shape. I'd paint it to look like a road with a double white line in the center and attach something car-related--red brake lights for example along the arch and hang curtains as daisyadair has described.

Hi Eric, Treating this trio of windows as one big window will keep the space visually simple and clean. The windows are too close together to get sheers for each one and would clutter up the visual space. So 1 rod across the top of all three and hang the rod in the top third of the space between the ceiling and where the trim begins on the windows. I would also suggest something lightweight like a cotton/linen blend or linen but sheers alone can be wimpy if you don’t get 1.5-2 panels per window - you want them looking full and gathered, not sparse and flat. You could also do a double rod - sheers on the back and a linen or cotton on the front rod for a full and layered look. If you plan to get rid of the mini blinds you could do a pretty bamboo cordless shade from Arlo. You can buy these anywhere and everywhere for an excellent value. In terms of color a simple white/off-white or a shade that matches that blue rug if that’s staying could be pretty and start to tie the room together. I did some mock ups - all pottery barn drapery panels. A blue one, white with bamboo, blue with bamboo shades, and blue with sheers. Any of these options would turn out lovely. Have fun decorating!

If you really want them you need to remove the mirrors. The mirrors aren't reflecting anything worth seeing twice. Even if not closing the curtains they need to look like they can be closed. For the rod measure the width of the window and add 1 to 3 inches for each side of the window. Multiply the rod length by 1.5 for minimum fullness, 2 for medium fullness and 2.5 for an extra full look. For example, for a 36-inch rod, your measurements would be 54 inches for minimum fullness, 72 inches for medium fullness and 90 inches for an extra full look.

I agree and I want to avoid negating the look while providing the functionality - as much as I might like the idea of being in rhythm with the universe, I'm also a realist at heart. One though I had, but it might be too expensive a thought, was to put a recessed, electronic roller shade in the ceiling that can be used at night when sleeping and fully retracted at other times.

Sorry I don't have any ideas. I wanted to know, where did you get the woven wood blinds, and were they reasonably priced? Thanks.

I'm a fabric person, but I have to say I'd leave the windows as they are. I like the simplicity of the woven blinds. If the windows weren't stacked I think side panels one the ends would be ok if there were enough room. But because there two sets of windows, I'd leave them as they are. I think they look just right.

Thanks for the comments and compliments. The window treatments are Hunter Douglas. You can find them online I am sure. I really want to add some fabric and am in love with this silk I found (see photo above) The furniture is all going to be solids so other than pillows I have no real color. There is so little wall space any where to put art work so I thought panels were the best choice. I don't think that I want a valance since I have one on the kitchen window on that same wall.

So doesn't anyone think panels would look good? My neighbor thought they would look nice and the Ethan Allen decorator agrees, I was really just hoping someone had some creative ideas as to how I should hang them. I do agree that 4 panels might not look right because of the different size windows. I really don't think the upper windows will be a problem as there is enough wall space separating them. So if you were going to hang to panels, how would you do it? I would love some pictures for inspiration.
