Need help with window treatment ideas

Hi, we just bought a new house (in DC metro area) with a nice set of east facing windows in the master bedroom (image here: https://imgur.com/ZR4hcMn ). There is a large circular window centered on the walls, with two shoji panels that are semi-transparent on rails to cover it, with narrow windows on each side with angled tops. Each window is 6' tall, the angled side windows are 14" long.

The challenge is what type of window treatment could we use to keep the light out while sleeping without ruining the elegance of the look and the view during the day.

Thoughts?

Wow. Wow. Wow. That is stunning. Absolutely beautiful. I have no suggestions for the big window; possibly for the square part of the outer windows, an organic material, like sea grass? We have these sea grass shades installed in a top down bottom up configuration. Think they are Levelor?

But, you would be negating the look and the objective of the Japanese inspired features if you covered it all up with something that blocks the light. If that feature attracted you, why cover it up?

That is such an unexpected feature to find in a house here in the US.

Maybe just learn to go with the rhythm of the universe and awaken when daylight comes.

Aktillery's advice is excellent. Not only will it provide more light control, placement at the ceiling draws the eye up, making the room feel taller and more spacious. A room-darkening shade mounted outside the frame (use wall anchors) will provide best coverage. There are hundreds of choices of panels, from light sheers to heavy tapestry. It's okay if they hang behind the bed, it will look nice with or without a headboard.

Dino, I made window treatments for a similar bedroom situation. We did pleated panels on each side of the wide windows (hers was actually a french door opening) and used two rods (1 3/8 inch wood to match the furniture) on each side. Then used the same rod/finials and made a simple pleated valance over the off-set window. Both had the same type of pleats at the top and were placed on rings on the rods. Your small window looks too close to the wall to use a finial on each end, however. You might be able to use just an endcap on each end (does not extend out like a finial). Painter is coming Tuesday morning so curtains had to come down anyways. I totally agree that the curtains were way too dark – and your Eye was drawn to them. Never liked them from the day I put them up, but somehow they have managed to remain hanging there for two years. :(. Definitely will go more of a neutral color on the next ones if I do decide to get side panels. This is where I go back-and-forth and can't decide. I think I personally like the look of the window exposed – with maybe just blinds but don't know if it gives the room a "homey" look. As mentioned earlier the window is a very large 10 foot window – and you definitely feel a draft during the winter so i need to put something up. Uggghh- Interior decorating is certainly not one of my strengths and causes me stress!

Hunter Douglas makes a couple different shade product lines that come in co-ordinating fabrics/colors in both a horizontal and vertical version. These vertical options are not going to be the traditional PVC clanky, vertical blinds most are used to. You can get soft shades like Duette® Honeycombs, Skyline® Gliding Panels, or Luminette® Privacy Sheers. All these vertical products come in a horizontal version as well. I agree and I want to avoid negating the look while providing the functionality - as much as I might like the idea of being in rhythm with the universe, I'm also a realist at heart.

One though I had, but it might be too expensive a thought, was to put a recessed, electronic roller shade in the ceiling that can be used at night when sleeping and fully retracted at other times.

Wow, those are stunning windows. Could you have some type of finish put on the windows like they put on eyeglasses so they darken in the sunlight?? I think any other window treatment will affect the beauty of your window wall. Best of luck in your journey❣️
