What is this thing in the middle of the hood vent? pix
Comments (13)Bmorepanic - how do you know what is the cfm rating of that liner? Marti8a - as Bmorepanic says, the air comes in through the sides (and the back) of that housing. You can see the clips on either side (like the clips of an attache case), so that you can undo the housing to clean it. If the housing is cleaned often, it should be easy clean in the dishwasher. If it hasn't been touched in years, it will be difficult to clean, as would any hood with baffle filters that hadn't been cleaned in years. BTW, the photo you showed is a hood with "baffle filters" so you know what to ask for. Also, the shape you are looking for is called a "canopy" shape. Regarding cfms, if Bmorepanic is correct, and that liner has 250 cfms, it may be because the exhaust duct for the hood is quite narrow, and a 250 cfm hood is all that the duct could handle. If you want 600 cfms like you said, your duct should be 8" in diameter; you may be able to get away with 7". If your duct is smaller, and you have a 600 cfms liner, be prepared for a very noisy hood, as all those cfms get pulled through a duct that is too narrow for them. Also the 600 cfms won't exhaust the way 600 cfms should if the duct is too narrow. You might pay for a powerful liner, and never have that power if your duct is small. So, could be that the reason why that Ventahood is there is a small duct that wouldn't allow anything more that 250 cfms, and the buyer was hoping that the "equivalent to 365 cfms" was true....See MoreIs Direct Venting more quiet?
Comments (8)~mgood, I spent some time on the phone this morning. The food chain I pursued was Vent-a-Hood > Regional distribution people (who sells to the Builder's contact, who sells to the builder). So I spoke with Regional folks. He said two things: 1.) The pic above is NOT a "Direct Vent" option, and; 2.) That between the Above, and the Direct Vent, that the above depicted option is the quieter of the two. HOWEVER, if you are able to vent straight up & through the roof, THAT is the quietest option of all. Curves make wind noise as we all know. I was unable to take advantage of that straight-up option because we have a room there, and the joists run such that piping between the floor was not feasible. Regional guy said ""We checked the serial number and that his hood is top vent. As we discussed top vent is quieter due to the fact that the 8" round duct off the top is 10.5" tall and air likes to move in a round pattern. The VentAHood Back Vent Requires a VP561 Back Vent Elbow that is 7" Tall and is through a rectangle which will cause the air flow to be louder."" Hope that helps!! MY CHIEF COMPLAIN IS WITH THE BUILDER'S REPRESENTATIVE COMPANY which is a Northern Virginia company called ABW - Appliance Builder's Warehouse. Their rep left the company last week, and as far as I am concerned, communicating with him was like tossing coins into an abyss. He was horrendous, never Replied, never answered questions, never offered ANY information, never followed up, and basically was merely a comission vortex. And my Ovens are now the wrong color when he had 8 MONTHS to figure that one out, and when asked DIRECTLY about this Vent situation, he dodged, said he was working on the direct vent option, then I never heard another thing until it was installed. I am SO GLAD to know that he went back to some Electrical sales job, but I hear that his replacement is worse. Matt Kiser - you were horrible!! I certainly hope you are better in your new job. Soon as we get closed, I fully expect to communicate with Management of that company, or key stakeholders, and let them know that they have a massive deficit on their front lines (with one exception - there was a gal there completely on her game. have no idea why she's not able to interface). Comments (33)Mine is from builder. It is one of Thermolec air heaters ( http://www.thermolec.com/en/productView.aspx?type=product&id=77) plus a separate current triggered flapper. The heater tries to heat the air to 15 C (PWM), activated by the air flow. It is a passive one and connects to the air return of the furnace via a 10 inch duct. It is not as sophisticated and highly performed as Kas's....See MoreNeed Quiet and Effective Hood Liner for 59.25" Lacanche Range
Comments (11)Joe Blow-You will love your Modern Aire hood. We have a 42" 1200 cfm hood over our LaCanche Volnay and it's fantastic. Ours vents directly out the back through a 6" wall. The fan and motor aren't loud at all. We use it almost exclusively at it's lowest setting, unless searing or cooking stir fry. I've never used it at 1200 cfm. It does get loud at higher settings, but it's the movement of the air, not the machine making the noise and there's no getting away from that. One thing I will caution you on. I have propped up one of the metal "fillers" next to the baffles (there's one on each side) with a small piece of wood because it makes a whistling noise if I don't. I never called Modern Aire about it to find out a better solution or why this is happening but you might want to mention it. Despite that, I love the hood and am putting one in my new beach house kitchen this year. I especially like the infinitely variable speed and light controls and how easy it is to remove the baffles to clean them in the DW....See Morenvestysly
