Vent-a-Hood Nouveau or Zephyr Tempest II
Comments (8)Just spent another weekend cooking at our lake house, where we have a 600 cfm VAH installed. It was the first hood I purchased, under circumstances similar to yours. The dealer we used for appliances just raved about them, told us how superior they were to all the others and "that's why they are the only hood we carry." What a load. Now that I'm totally spoiled by our Modern Aire hood with remote Fantech blower, cooking with the VAH is actually unpleasant. The incredibly loud din, as deafening at the lower settings as on High (it's NOT that VAH are quiet at high speeds, they are just equally noisy at low speeds, see the real scoop on noise), the markedly inferior performance, the ugly underside (compared to the beautiful baffle work in our MA), and the depressing realization that I will soon have to take down and hand wash the nasty "squirrel cages" all make the experience disappointing. I definitely am far on the negative end of the spectrum regarding VAH, but I also keep pointing out that I'm one of the few who have personal experience with the two hoods. If you search Vent a Hood, you'll get dozens of posts. One thing you'll see is that a lot of VAH defenders have only ever had a VAH. Many even say things like "of course, it's the only hood I've ever had, so I can't really compare..." Well, I can, and do on a regular basis. If you're mainly focused on the appearance of the hoods, rather than performance, that's OK, it's one approach, but it does lead to poor performance choices. If you search Vent a Hood and Zephyr on this forum, you'll get dozens of hits. I'd keep reading....See MoreCross Post: Kobe and Imperial Hoods and Venting Question
Comments (3)This is encouraging. Thank you! Gaudalupe: Which model Kobe do you have? Is it one with the oil cups (Ch-179)? Those freaked me out (are they plastic?) and I went toward the 176 because it has baffles. But the models with the cups have more a bit more CFM. So with some encouragement that may be for me. Eandhl: Good to hear about the lights. I'll post pics when I have some. Old houses are full of challenges and opportunities. Not a right angle in the place....See MoreImperial or Broan hood vent?
Comments (3)My vent hoods have always been the same size as my cooking surface and it's always been fine with me. (I cook a lot, but never fry and rarely sear. I occasionally stir fry and I boil water a lot.). But you will also read people on here saying they have been fine with down draft or no vent at all. So I think it's hard to know just how much of a difference bigger makes unless you have experienced it?...See MoreBroan hood installation - gaps between vent and sheetrock.
Comments (5)We had new siding installed last summer, and my GC sealed everything he could. The wasps must get into the attic, then the walls, I guess. They might also be crawling in through the 35 recessed lights. It is a huge open room, so 35 lights, really! I can't remember who installed the vent...either the electrician or the cabinet maker. I will have my GC look at it, but I don't know if he will know what to do with it. He is a local rancher who has done general contracting for years. He does a great job, but we have to wait a long time to get him. The current homeowner he is working with keeps adding things she wants fixed, changed, or added to his list. Plus, the cattle have to be cared for. So, we wait. He thought he would start our upstairs remodeling last September, so we emptied out our upstairs in August, and everything has been piled in our living room and bedroom ever since. I had a feeling he would not start until February, but now it is March. We are thankful to get him even if we do have to wait. (Very rural area with horrible contractors and "experts"...well, people pretending to be experts. I didn't know there was a hole until I leaned in with a camera to see what was going on. They said they sealed it when they installed it. Obviously not, if I go by the jagged looking sheetrock....See Moreabick2
