Vent-a-Hood or Best by Broan AND size??
Comments (11)All I know about vent hoods is what I learned in buying ours. From what I understand, there are 3 types of blowers -- one in the hood itself, a remote fan that sits on the roof or an inline that goes inside the wall or attic space between your hood and and the exit point. on your roof. I saw inline blowers that needed I think 12 or 14" of space, and I had a little over 10" between the joists. I could not run straight up due to a bathroom, plumbing and the fact that the walls upstairs were not directly over the downstairs wall, so I was limited to the space between my joists and a 10" duct. Trying to buy a hood that doesn't sound like a jet engine taking off (i.e., at their loudest) is very frustrating. It seems no one wants you to hear theirs, and that never seems like a good thing. I was trying to think of a way to describe the sound leve on mine, so I went in the kithen and tried to find something everyone could relate to. On the lowest setting, my hood has about the same volume but a lower pitch than my microwave drawer while heating a cup of water or similar to my oven fan, but again, at a lower pitch. On the highest setting, it's a little louder than my prep sink faucet running water into the open sink drain and quieter than my new KA pro mixer. I am still missing a panel that will sit in front of the duct, so that may have some impact. We had to reorder that piece, so I ought to check it out when it gets replaced. Hope that helps....See MoreBest by Broan vs. Vent a Hood
Comments (5)One big difference I have found in the price of hoods is the type of stainless they are made from. A Best hood is 403 stainless and the Vent a hood is 304 I believe. Best makes a "marine grade" stainless hood in the "WP" series out of 316 which is the best and it costs twice as much as the "KA" series. If you live in a coastal area with salt air you WILL get rust spots on a 403 stainless hood. You can polish out the spots and coat the metal to help this out but the finish will not look nearly as good as a 316 hood....See MoreRange hoods under cabinet Vent a hood vs Kobe
Comments (3)@sarina: I have had the Kobe RA02 for about 8 months now. Being an engineer, I did the install myself, although the chimney cover is still not in place, as I need to redo the crown molding behind it (procrastination is the name of this game). Overall I like it, but that doesn't say much, as my previous ventilation was just a fan-in-a-ceiling-hole. The quiet setting is quiet, but the other two are noisy; without previous experience, the "sones" numbers don't translate well into actual noise levels. Otherwise, on High, the hood is pulling out all the smoke and airborne grease steaks in a cast-iron skillet produce. You will have to open a window or install a MUA to help it pull all that air volume. The baffles need scrubbing every month or so, but that's a very small price to pay for not having cabinetry and walls smeared in grease. The model you're looking at is a little more elaborate, as it has some sort of electronic control. The RA02 is bare-bones, just two rotary switches....See MoreImperial and Kobe Hoods and General Venting Question
Comments (1)I found info on hood installations for ducts exactly that size. It says that you purchase duct transitions and angles at most plumbing supply stores. I also saw something on Vent A Hood that says it's made for a what I believe is your duct size. Sorry in advance if this is something you already checked out Here is a link that might be useful: duct info....See MoreRelated Professionals
