Broan hood installation - gaps between vent and sheetrock.

We are getting wasps in the house. I think they are coming in through the vent hood. I did not realize the gaps were there.

This picture is the sheetrock wall where the back of the hood goes outside of the wall. No ducts going up. The installer said it would be sealed.

The wood you see is the underside of the upper cabinet that is above the vent hood.

Obviously, the hood installer did not seal it. Lots of holes. What do I need to do to seal it? What products? I guess we will have to lie down on top of the rangetop, but we still will not be able to see where the holes are. I think the gap is about 3".

So, once the holes are sealed, we need to insulate the 3" gap. We are thinking about putting a stainless steel panel as part of our backsplash. Somehow, attach the S.S. to the back of the vent hood, down down the wall, on 3" section of quartzite behind rangetop, and attach it to the rangetop.

The countertop has a bad seam so we want to hide it.

Any advice? Other ideas? Thanks.

This is the bad seam which can be seen from a distance. If I put a stainless steel panel up at the vent, run it down the wall to the bottom, then bend it in a 90° angle, it will go where the light blue "paint" is. The seam will still show.

If I put the steel panel a little wider, it will cover the seam, but it will be wider than the rangetop and it will stick out. Maybe the corner can be rounded.

I really need some help. I can't buy a backsplash tile until this gets fixed.

Any advice?

No advice for the seam, but I'd shoot some canned foam insulation behind the hood. Don't overfill, and when dry, if needed, trim with a utility knife. Maybe this bump will get you more advice.

I've only ever dealt with powered MUA in commercial applications. In residential, just dampers that are interlocked with the hood. Yes powered ventilation is obviously more effective than passive ventilation, but a simple damper has done the job in any residential application I've ever seen, integrated with the HVAC system if needed. The separate switch would only make sense if you were doing a separate blower which I think is overkill for most residential. As I said before, simple is the key! Simple design, simple to operate, simple to service. Most people just want to be able to turn the fan to a certain speed and get cooking. They don't want to futz around with a bunch of variable speed controls balancing exhaust flow with intake. And I'm never a fan of putting complicated crap like that into a house that only makes sense to the owner. You're going to flummox guests and future owners for no real advantage. Of course, if you are going to connect to the HVAC system, you should have a HVAC person who can deal with that, including automatic blower activation if needed and making sure you're not bringing too much outside air into your return duct. This goes especially if you have gas heat. You do not want to kill your heat exchanger prematurely. Makeup air has been a real problem in the residential appliance biz. Clueless salesmen/kitchen designers spec'ing these gigantic ranges and gigantic accompanying hoods (often that are too powerful for even the gigantic ranges), and they have no idea there could possibly be a consequence. Kudos to Broan for coming up with a prepackaged solution that does not require an engineering degree to understand and use, or any expert for that matter (although as I said above, an HVAC tech's help may be needed for some installs). I guess you could rig up a dedicated blower and resistance heater for the kitchen, but most people I know would rather ditch the prostyle range than cough up the cash to install and operate that. Nobody is "interested" in MUA. It is not a creature comfort. Either you need it or you don't. If you don't, there's no point spending the $$$ for it. bob_cville, hold that thought. I'll be starting the rip out around Feb. 8. My kitchen is what I am sure is the old front porch to this 1880 farm house. It's the L shape, two story called Folk Victorian. My carpenter thinks he can run the duct through the ceiling joists and out the side wall but I don't know......he says they HAVE to be deep enough to support the roof but again, where is that written? I fully expect to find the corner porch posts as the corner posts for the room. OR they're what's holding up the shelves in the fruit room in the basement. This guy is experienced so I'm not worried about it and if it doesn't work out like he thinks, he'll come up with an idea to solve the problem. He will be in Florida until Feb. 1 so as soon as he's here I'll have him take a look at the hood and then if we need parts I'll get back to you ASAP. Yowzers! $41!! Had you by the short hairs, didn't they! Warmfridge, I'm sitting here trying to see out the window. The blizzard we are getting tonight/tomorrow could have drifts 10 to 12 feet high. Grumble, grumble. I skipped work today knowing I'd be heading home again at noon so saved myself the aggrevation of even going. I don't want to be here now, I want to be here in February! Sears is driving me crazy. I started keeping track of the price of all the ranges; checking them every day. They're different almost every day! And the sale price isn't always the price shown on the web page. AFTER you add it to your cart it shows different. Today if I bought it at the store (NOT on line) it would have been $2800. On the web site it's listed at $2974.99. And no one knows what kind of cord it needs or where to get one. SEARS doesn't know if the range needs a cord or if it's with the range. And if it isn't with the range, which cord does it need? I'm speechless at the ineptness of this whole kitchen process starting with trying to buy that hood locally. I guess I'll wait as long as I can......Sept./Oct. sales are not so far away but it will sure make my counter a challenge. 120 days from now, we should be winding up winter and I will be a happy camper!

Wolf Range hood and Broan / Best exterior blower combo

OK better late than never. I finally got the wolf hood fan and broan 335 They are working as designed. For reference, my Wolf range hood was the pro hood..PW482718 I believe. Inside the hood there was just one electrical wire. This wire connects to the house 120V supply. There are also two regular electrical plugs inside the hood. These electrical plugs are where you plug in the blower (remote or internal) You will need your electrician to run a 3 conductor wire from the blower down to the range hood. Here are the differences between the Broan and Wolf remote blowers: The wolf external blower comes with a power cord that plugs into the plugs in the hood. You then splice this cord together with the cord from the remote blower and hide it in the junction box inside the hood. The broan remote blower does not come with this cord. Fortunately it is just a standard 3 prong plug. Just picture a computer power supply plug, and cut the end that connects into the power supply off. Just make sure it is rated for the amperage of the remote blower. Plug one end of this cord into the outlet inside the range hood, and splice the other end to the wires coming down from the remote blower. On the other hand you can purchase the official wolf cord but it is like $65 That's it, everything works as planned, the blower fan speeds are infinite. Lights, heat lamps, etc all work if wired this way. There may be slight differences cosmetically on the exterior of the blower, but without having both I can't say. All I can say is the broan 335 works with 100% with the wolf pro hood, you just need to supply a power cord.

The radiation (radiant heat in the infrared) spreads out like light (because it is light), but this only falls as 1/R^2 when it is emitted from a point source. Other shapes only approach this at a significant distance. There are whole pages of thermal transfer functions applicable to one shape transferring heat by radiation to another nearby shape. But I get your intent. The heat flux density is higher closer to the gas flame, due both to more concentrated radiation, and to convection from the more concentrated hot gas impingement onto the shielding material. If the shielding material were highly conductive -- e.g., thick copper instead of thin stainless steel with an air gap behind it -- the thermal conductivity (heat spreading) could in principle be sufficiently high that, assuming a large enough surface with only some of it heated, it could conduct and then reradiate or convect back into the air the heat input such that all parts of the slab remained below the critical temperature. A heat pipe like architecture could also be imagined performing this function with less copper employed. The GE backspash, however, is the more practical approach.

I can't write much about this, particularly as the photos do not clarify the big picture for me. Some photos from varying distances closing in toward the hood might help provide context. This is likely because I don't have this type of hood.

To address wasps, I would start at the outside and seal all gaps around the ducting and duct cap. And there should be a damper in the duct near the duct exit.

We had new siding installed last summer, and my GC sealed everything he could. The wasps must get into the attic, then the walls, I guess. They might also be crawling in through the 35 recessed lights. It is a huge open room, so 35 lights, really! I can't remember who installed the vent...either the electrician or the cabinet maker. I will have my GC look at it, but I don't know if he will know what to do with it. He is a local rancher who has done general contracting for years. He does a great job, but we have to wait a long time to get him. The current homeowner he is working with keeps adding things she wants fixed, changed, or added to his list. Plus, the cattle have to be cared for. So, we wait. He thought he would start our upstairs remodeling last September, so we emptied out our upstairs in August, and everything has been piled in our living room and bedroom ever since. I had a feeling he would not start until February, but now it is March. We are thankful to get him even if we do have to wait. (Very rural area with horrible contractors and "experts"...well, people pretending to be experts.

I didn't know there was a hole until I leaned in with a camera to see what was going on. They said they sealed it when they installed it. Obviously not, if I go by the jagged looking sheetrock.
