2 new red Tantau roses introduced:
Comments (6)I do hope that among the new 100+ roses that Pickering promised to offer next year, they will have a few of the new Tantau roses. If not, probably Hortico will be the only place to order them from till a few own root nurseries in the US could get them. The Meilland rose, I assume, will be available sooner due to Star Roses and Meilland "cooperation"....See MoreTell about your Tantau roses
Comments (23)Tantau needs some kind of agent or distributor, which they could get, but for some reason choose not to. We've discussed this a lot on the forum, and I don't know what the latest news is, but it would seem that Tantau could make a tidy sum in the US/Canada rose market. I see I've posted some old photos of Augusta Luise, so here are some newer ones. She's my very favorite rose. Diane...See MoreTantau and Fil Roses
Comments (16)There are more issues with roses from offshore than just viruses. Rose Rosette disease came from Asia as did Japanese beetles. A couple of years ago the restrictions became even more difficult because of a beetle larva that can live in rose stems. Now the budwood I can import has to be less than the thickness of a pencil so that the beetle larva does not come with the roses. This beetle probably is not a threat to roses but it has the potential to destroy American forests. There is also another very serious disease attacking roses in Europe and the clearance for roses from northern Europe is even more difficult. I have has USDA quarantine sites for more than 20 years and I think that the caution that of USDA is well founded. Yes it can be frustrating, but the idea that someone would do illegal importation of roses just to have a rose not available in the N. America is reckless and a bit selfish. I do not know why Tantau does not have an agent in N. America. I have long been friends with them, but since I work with the competition it is not something we discuss. Perhaps Palatine was not prepared to do the US patent and Canadian PBR that would be necessary to protect Tantau's varieties and this is why they are not able to offer these roses more than the size of the company. It is difficult and expensive work to protect the roses. Without protection Tantau is unlikely to have any financial gain from offering roses in N. America. J&P was Tantau's agent at the time Fragrant Cloud was introduced and they patented the rose. It is now off patent....See MoreI received a Tantau rose catalogue.... They are so many gorgeous roses
Comments (14)Dianela, I was told years ago by the owner of Palatine that Tantau had no agent here in the US, so they couldn't sell their line of roses here. The older, off patent roses, have been sold for decades in the US. It's the newer ones that are affected. By the term "agent", they must have meant a distributor, plus a US grower would be needed. Before Palatine, Hortico sold Augusta Luise (that is the original spelling, and AL's name is trademarked, but she is not patented, I guess) for a couple of years, and another great rose, which I grow and got from Hortico, called Bernstein-Rose. I would say that Tantau's marketing strategy is worse than David Austin's (when they do the mysterious discontinuation of Evelyn that seems to come and go). I must be on a permanent soapbox when it comes to Tantau, and it's getting worse. Why would a company, well established, that could make a fortune over here, not give it a try? Plus, think of the money they are losing by sending all of us those beautiful catalogs. Diane...See Moredianela7analabama
