Tell about your Carruth Roses
Comments (40)I admire Tom Carruth very much. He started out in a business that did not please his father, worked hard to find a way to go to college, gradually finding rosarians to learn from, becoming mentored by them when they saw his talent and passion, he never gave up and produced some of the world's most beautiful roses. I'm so glad he didn't just produce California zone roses. Most will grow where winters get cold. I have Outta The Blue and Wild Blue Yonder, which are similar; ruffly, romantic Love Song; Grand Dame with strong fragrance; Pink Home Run which is constantly covered in blooms and Watercolors Home Run. I wish I had chosen Julia Child instead of the Austin Golden Celebration, but maybe GC will improve with time. I was shocked with the bright orange buds of Cinco de Mayo since I don't have orange in my garden, but they open into the most gorgeous blooms in a range of subtle colors. Twilight Zone would be a good Cinco de Mayo companion. I miss going to The Huntington Rose Gardens where Mr. Carruth is curator since I moved to inland northeast WA. I'm looking forward to more of his introductions....See MorePlease Tell Us About Your Best Ten Roses
Comments (106)I bought my Francis Meilland from a nursery clearance three years ago as a half-dying potted bareroot rose, and it bounced back pretty well. I put it in a pot for one year, and after two years being in the ground, no matter how hard I pruned it back, it grew to 7 feet tall. (I removed about 3 feet from each stem after the first flush.) It's not stingy for me at all, blooming regularly every 5-6 weeks. Maybe it just needs some time to mature. I only fertilized once in March and water my roses every three days in summer. We're not as hot as other states/countries, though. Photo taken 3 days ago....See MoreI received a Tantau rose catalogue.... They are so many gorgeous roses
Comments (14)Dianela, I was told years ago by the owner of Palatine that Tantau had no agent here in the US, so they couldn't sell their line of roses here. The older, off patent roses, have been sold for decades in the US. It's the newer ones that are affected. By the term "agent", they must have meant a distributor, plus a US grower would be needed. Before Palatine, Hortico sold Augusta Luise (that is the original spelling, and AL's name is trademarked, but she is not patented, I guess) for a couple of years, and another great rose, which I grow and got from Hortico, called Bernstein-Rose. I would say that Tantau's marketing strategy is worse than David Austin's (when they do the mysterious discontinuation of Evelyn that seems to come and go). I must be on a permanent soapbox when it comes to Tantau, and it's getting worse. Why would a company, well established, that could make a fortune over here, not give it a try? Plus, think of the money they are losing by sending all of us those beautiful catalogs. Diane...See MoreFavorite German roses (Kordes, Tantau)?
Comments (45)Thank you Rosecanadian and Flowers and all. I lost that Alchymist plant to cold! At least I think that's what did it. Maybe it was voles. It's supposed to be very hardy...Botanica's Roses rates it as hardy in zone 3. Kitty, Alchymist has a lot of different looks to it but often has a lot stronger coloring and can have some orange. Since it's a Kordes rose I'll add a picture or two. It is a very thorny rose with fat , beefy canes that can look ugly on the lower part. It would be good to grow something else to cover that . Blooms are large but have no fragrance....See MorePoorbutroserich Susan Nashville
