Back when CD's first came out, their dynamic range was more full -- they contained quiet bits as well as louder bits. You had to turn the volume knob higher to hear these old discs well. Driving along one day, we'd listened to one of our first CD purchases -- some classical disc of something or other, and had the volume turned way up to hear it correctly. The gentle music came to a close, the next disc started automatically, and POW!!!! (love the Clash but love my ear drums too so turn the volume down!)
