Thinking of Those in Path of the Hurricane
Comments (11)I was happy to wake up this morning and see how many of my east coast friends had posted with they were safe, out of power, or had trees down, a leak here and there but otherwise safe. I worry about the ones that have not posted yet, my friend who was taking news photos in Atlantic City. I am thinking of all that lost homes to the fire and those that lost them in the flooding....See MoreTo those folks in Sandy's path ...
Comments (32)So that accounts for all Long Islanders that I know of, except for Donn. And I hate to say it, but if he is on a canal in Amityville, it is very likely that he's got his hands full with a total mess. My brother (same location)had 5.5 feet of water in the house (ground floor/only floor - a ranch)and it is a total loss. He spent the week this week dragging out furniture over runined floors and prying drawers on dressers/nighttables/cabinets open with a crow bar because the wood structures had swelled and tightened, keeping the contents hostage. When he got to the the contents - everything absolutely ruined. Papers, pictures, a 20 year collection of video tapes of family events. Every piece of furniture, every appliance, most all clothing except for things on the highest closet shelves. He has insurance and FEMA may help, but anyone who has ever gone through an emergency that called for insurance knows that it just won't cover everything. For instance, his outdoor hot tub is neither a household "content" or "structure" (thousands to replace) and all the landscaping around the property too. He is VERY lucky that our Mom still lives in the too big for her family home. He's moved back in there with wife, dog and busniess (he works from home) they all get along well, which is good, becasue he is saying he will probably have to rebuild entirely and that will take some time....See MoreFor those in Stella's path - stay safe -
Comments (42)Our actual snowfall fell short of the predicted 12 - 18 inches but that's typical for this area. The local weather stations in Philly often make weather predictions based on whether you are north or south of the I-95 corridor which runs in a diagonal line through the city paralleling the coastline. We're just south of I 95 and many of our snowstorms result in the infamous 'wintry mix' - well yesterday was snow, hail, sleet, rain and temperatures below freezing all day. My poor arborvitae are bending low to the ground along with my Japanese Acuba, and skip laurel, the magnolias have lost many branches, my just opening camellias blossoms are frozen, the Skip laurel and photinia look like an elephant sat on them. Everything is coated in ice. My street was closed for part of yesterday because several large white pines toppled. Our lights blinked several times but we never lost power. My regular mailman made it and warned me to stay home. Hiring my landscaper to plow the driveway and shovel the sidewalks this year was a great decision. It's only 20 this morning it's only going to 29. The roads are a mess and many schools remain closed or are having a delayed opening. I know we'll have a lot of pruning to do. Our place in the PA mountains had 2' of snow by noon and they were expecting another 18" - our landscaper called to tell us that he had removed the first 2' and that he'd go back later for the rest. Comments (25)Found this online. Well Masters are the UK’s leading well restoration specialists that offer a complete service from well cleaning to glass well covers and light installations. The modern alternative to the traditional well top is to have lights installed into the well and then a glass cover over the top. Glass well caps are great for both indoors and outdoors. Glass well covers are the best way to enhance the well head for both practical and safety aspects of the well plus also add a huge safety aspect to the well. Not only do glass well covers look amazing they are also extremely safe. On average the glass has 3x 10mm thick laminated toughened glass layers all bonded together forming an extremely strong glass well cover which can with stand a car driving on it. If the glass was to ever get damaged in anyway then only one layer would get damaged leaving the well still safe until maintenance could be carried out. Having said that glass covers last many many years. A glass well top will also allow you to still use the well with the installation of our pump system which can be installed so it does not draw you from the beauty of the well. By using black pipe work, black rope, black cable, black fittings and some careful positioning, the look does not diminish from the character of the well. Condensation can be a major problem with a glass well cover so please do not leave it for anyone to install please contact us because we have many, many years experience and can ensure your glass is condensation free forever. Once it is all installed it is usually impossible or extremely hard to put right so please contact us before contracting out to a builder or trying to install yourself because it will be a very expensive mistake and will look very ugly. There are a few glass manufacturers who can claim to supply a glass cover with an anti-condensation film. Please DO NOT pay for this option. There is no such thing as anti-condensation when it comes to a well and a glass well cover. There is many chemicals which can be put on the underside of the glass which make the water drip off rather then stay on the underside and this is what you would be paying for. The actual cost of the product is £3 for a large bottle! You will still get drips from it and it will still look extremely horrid. The only way to stop condensation is by contacting us and let us supply and install your glass well cover. A well is a constant temperature where as outside air changes all the time so no matter what you do to treat the glass you will get condensation....See Morerob333 (zone 7a)
