You know, Lux, those early "yellows" were in a large part very pale to begin with. If it had a LITTLE yellow, they called it "yellow."

I don't know of any older yellows that don't fade, but I know of some that fade so beautifully I consider it an asset:

My Reve d’Or didn’t seem to fade much but a pale yellow to start with. In cool weather the blooms get some pink.

Marechal Niel (first blooms this year, so not a lot of experience with it) - it was originally grown to sell as cut flowers.

I cut off a bloom deformed by cold weather and it held its shape for 2 days lying on a bench outside!

I would not call the colour deep yellow, but it is distinctly yellow and doesn't fade. Pink tinge in cold weather.

Look it up on this site, I think it was Daisy in Crete who had a spectacular specimen.

The "trick" to raising a "non-fading yellow" is to only enjoy its flowers in shade to filtered light. The yellows which retain more of the yellow are modern HTs and floribundas and often have little to no scent. Even Golden Oldie, which is gold here in the cooth of the Coast, bleaches to "Lemon Spice" yellow in San Jose. It is much less the abilities of the individual rose which provides its lasting yellow and MUCH more the conditions in which it is grown. Even the more color-fast will fade much lighter. This is here, June, when it's supposed to be "warm".

At first, I didn't think they were the same as they appear so different but they are. I grow Marechal Niel and it opens its flowers in reflected light at the edge of the patio cover. There, they are more yellow, but the ones which open in the sun are lighter.

Lady Hillingdon and Souv de Pierre Notting are two lovely yellow Teas that hold color here, while fading somewhat, they are still yellow.

Cut flowers of 'Etoile de Lyon' reliably darken to a solid medium yellow within a few hours of being brought indoors and stay that way (really surprised me the first time I saw it happen, but, outdoors, blooms on the shadier parts of the plant also are medium yellow and darker than those that are in the sun), and easily last 5 days in a vase (blooms have immense substance and heat tolerance). The shrub has perfect, disease-resistant foliage. Its main flaw, like the somewhat similar 'Souvenir de Pierre Notting' (but SdPN has more of a tendency to go pink in hot weather), is that the ugly brown spent flowers cling like grim death, making deadheading a virtual necessity. The plant easily gets very large (8' x 12' +).

Indoors, the flowers would turn completely into the darker yellow seen in the inner part of this outdoor flower:

I agree with Catspa that Etoile de Lyon is perfect! I had not brought the cut flowers inside, but now I will.

This is now with 41 days 100 F or over so far this Summer. The plant is so healthy.

Reve d’Or tends to only bloom in the cooler Spring and Fall, which could explain why mine seems to stay yellow because it’s cooler then? I seem to remember the few blooms mid summer were more beige than yellow, but I didn’t get pictures.

I just recalled the other main flaw of 'Etoile de Lyon', which is that the blooms are very intolerant of moisture in the air -- the least bit (rain, fog, high humidity) immediately and unattractively browned the edges of the outer petals. So, the entire first spring flush was ruined in some years, though later blooms were always great. This coupled with not dropping the ugly spent blooms led us to part ways after about ten years, making a space for the Graton cemetery's 'Mme. Lombard'. Your 'Etoile de Lyon' looks gorgeous, Sheila -- hot, dry heat really is that variety's forte.

My Reve d"Or is growing in partial sun - mostly morning. It blooms here in the North SF Bay area at least 11 months of the year. The blooms range from a pale orangey buff to pale yellow. Here is a pic:

Lux, this is Marguerite de Fénelon, a yellow Tea I obtained from Vintage last year. It's taking its time developing, but the color is superb, plant healthy and it's supposedly descended from Reine Emma des Pays-Bas, which, per Fred Boutin, was a repeat flowering sport of Fortune's Double Yellow. What about Lady Hillingdon? I've never grown her, but she seems to be a rich, deep yellowy apricot. It's probably not as "yellow" as what you're seeking though.

Peter Schneider says she's hardy enough for his area of Ohio, so I'm interested in trying her!

Hillingdon is a good rose and a lovely color WHEN fresh, and grown in filtered light or in cooler weather. She fades with the best of them to VERY pale. The best thing about her is the faint "ripe apricot" scent of a very freshly opening bud in perfect weather conditions for it to express.

Your photo of ' Marguerite de Fenelon' shows an amazing Tea rose! O.M.G. it's just soooo lovely.

Last week I pollinated several blooms of 'Duchess de Brabant' with pollen from 'Lemon Spice'. and a couple more with pollen from Alliance Franco-Russe'

I love how floriferous Duchesse de Brabant' is and I'm hoping I could get that trait in a seedling from her, along with the yellow hue from Lemon Spice, or A.F-R.' , are the odds for or against me in achieving this?

- I'm about done with cross pollinating for this year Now all I need to do is wait for 4 months for the seeds to develop. Because most of my crosses are with Tea class roses, do I still need to chill the hips in the refrigerator for several weeks? Thanks again for your advice.

I ordered 'Marachel Niel' from an Oregon nursery, 3 times and I received Marachal NIel' once, but it declined and died after a few years, then I received 'Reve d'Or' from them and it sported to Duchess d'Auerstadt'

I've been toying with the idea of trying Ley's Perpetual, after coming across it again when paging through "The Quest for the Rose." But from searching this forum, it seems like it might be as finicky as Marachel Niel.

Thanks, Lux. Refrigerate the seeds? I honestly don't think they need it. Cold stratification is beneficial for delaying germination for when you can't safely handle tender young seedlings due to too extreme conditions and to stimulate those types which have evolved where "winter" is severe. Those NEED to experience those types of conditions to "tell them" winter is over and it's now safe to germinate. Teas didn't evolve in those conditions. "Winter" is when they are at their best because THAT is when the rains occur where they arose. It's when they are actively growing and "ovulating". Whey would they need colder to germinate? Of course you can try it and see if you find it appears to increase your yield but it's not seemed necessary as far as I've seen here. Good luck! I like where you're heading with it! Fingers crossed!
