My community lost a lovely heritage home to fire last night
Comments (13)Yes, the loss of heritage property is terrible, because it contributes to the loss of a sense of place and history that connects people to their communities in a way that no uninspired builder special can ever do. It also reduces the examples of fine craftsmanship that built those houses. I live in an historic area, and fortunately for the cause of preservation, the South was impoverished after the Civil War, and didn't really begin to recover until air conditioning. So development did less damage here than in some other parts of the country. But like everywhere else, too much of our suburban growth seems to have given us what my DH and I call the Unites States of Generica. You could be anywhere, and the lack of meaning and grace disconnects people from any sense of common purpose. So Sochi, I understand very well how much the loss hurts your soul. I hope they have whacking good insurance, and help from whatever the local heritage society and government can supply, and the stomach to restore it....See MoreRuh-roh: LOW temps forecast for eastern U.S. this Friday night
Comments (34)Once I got started it was hard to stop. I covered a bunch of stuff with frost blankets, sheets, trash cans, buckets or pots lined with cut up frost blanket and even a couple card board boxes. Got down to 29° early this morning. Most things look great. A little frost damage on some covered stuff along with some bent leaves here and there. Some frost damage on uncovered stuff, but for the most part, everything fared well. Seems like location was the deciding factor. Having space between the cover and the plant makes a huge difference. Of course, more will be revealed as some damage may not be apparent yet....See MoreFRIDAY NIGHT MUSIC - LOST IN SPACE part 2
Comments (43)I had temporarily forgotten about this song, definitely about Space: When I saw Human League at the Warfield Theater in San Francisco circa 1981, English tourists had bought most of the tickets and so many locals were unable to attend, since the theater is not that large. The English tourists were also very animated and danced in front of their seats during most of the concert instead of sitting, and so I had to stand up to see the stage, and I had a very good seat. All seats were reserved, and so people had to stay in their reserved spaces. I found the group a bit arrogant in their attitude toward the audience, and they said they were shocked when they walked the streets in New York and no one recognized them. They were appreciated in San Francisco but not idolized the way they were in England, and this was a disappointment for them....See MoreFNM Friday Night Music: Halloween/Fright Night
Comments (35)I like Talking Heads and Psycho Killer. I think Tina Weymouth's spare and tasty bass part makes that song what it is....See Moreeltonjohndenver
