What should I do with my pine table and chairs?

We are almost finished our main floor renovations, and are starting to put the finishing touches on our home!

The dining set was was donated by my family and I would like to update it to match the style of our home. I like the idea of a two-toned look, where the table legs and chairs are one darker colour, and the table top is another. I am totally stuck on which colours to paint/stain the set. I am also looking to recover the fabric on the chairs.

Does anyone have an ideas to get my creative juices flowing? Thank you!

Other information:

Walls: BM stonington grey

Island: BM hale navy

Trim: BM chantilly lace

I think your space is too small to do a two-toned set. It will begin to be too busy. If this space is to be your dining area, center the table parallel to the fireplace under the fan and switch it to a nice chandelier. Consider matching the table to the mantel color. If you really want the two-tone, use the island and cabinet colors.

Stain the set in the warm honey color of your side console--slightly more honey stain than photo below. Get a wood bowl in that stain for the island and some warm wood cutting boards to place against the backsplash. Possibly get navy white seat cushions.

Or just stain the table and paint the wood chairs Navy Hale.

Yes -- painting all of the items in black is a brillant plan! And the results would be great -- and bring all of the elements together! If you can -- post photos of your kitchen cabinets too! I like it. Is it cutting edge trendy? Not even close, but I like it. It's homey and comfortable. If it were mine, I wouldn't paint. If you paint, you're going to have to paint not only the shelves, but the lower half of the walls and the ceiling beams ... and in the process you'd lose so much warmth and character. If you feel you MUST do something, I'd do the fireplace in a white wash -- a dirty white wash that'd allow a bit of color to show through. You could test this: Tape up some white paper on the fireplace and live with it a while. I wonder how much of your dissatisfaction has to do with lighting. I see you have several lamps burning. What if you could do something along the lines of in-cabinet lighting -- you know, like they do in kitchens -- in the shelves. Or what if you bring in color in your furniture? Instead of painting the room itself, bring in a RED sofa ... or paint the (completely removeable) table and TV stand a bright color.

It would be helpful to see pics of the opposite wall with painted white brick and more of the room. Your mirrors & light gray furniture give impression you are craving light. Suggestion: First, clean the paneling well & paint out or replace the fireplace insert black to match other accessories & make it less prominent. Then, decide if the paneling is too dark or wrong color to work with furniture + rest of the house & same with brick. It seems like remaining decisions, e.g. paint paneling or replace with drywall, paint brick or reface, add mantle, add bookshelves, etc. will depend on your budget.

I agree with decoenthusiaste about two-tone. Her idea to angle the table to the fireplace is brilliant. For chair upholstery, I'd look to the bar stools. Too matchy-matchy?

I would paint the chairs and base of table Black, leave the top as is.

I love the chairs.
I’d reupholster with black material.
The table I would just leave as is. I don’t think stain or paint would change it.
I’d wait until you can get a new table. I think something mid century with those chairs would look beauty.

I like how the table and chairs warm up the room. I would keep them as they are. However, they kind of don't relate to anything in the kitchen - if planning to change the counter stools, I would change them to be the same tone as the pine table/chairs
