how do i cut the brown tips off my spider plant?
Comments (11)Lamora, waiting a few days before repotting was a good idea. Some authors suggest waiting six-months, but when roots pop out of drainage holes, it's time to repot. If the pot is too large there will be problems. The max is 2" larger than the rootball. Miracle Gro is good soil, but it should be amended with other mediums like Perlite. MG has some Perlite mixed in, but not enough. So, if you decide to reduce pot size, add Perlite with MG. After repotting, 'pot needs drainage holes,' water thoroughly. Place in a bright to sunny spot, and let be. Watering depends on pot size, air moisture, and heat/cool temps. Soil should dry between waterings. Three ways to test soil is, 1. insert your finger or a thin stick deep in soil..if it comes out moist/wet, bottom soil is still wet. Don't water. 2. Lift pot. If it's heavy, soil is damp to wet. Don't water. If light, give it a drink. 3. Water guages. Don't bother with the little cardboard types..they're trash. If you want a decent guage, buy one at a reputable shop. But, inserting a stake/finger is the best, and econical way. No need spending money. Lamora..you didn't fail your plant. Losing plants is part of gardening and a way of learning. All gardeners, in and out, lost plants at times. We learn by our mistakes. Correct what we did wrong with the first plant. So, please don't feel bad. There are two other methods I use and find very helpful. you might or might not be interested. One is misting plants daily. Sprayers are inexpensive. The second is a product called Superthive. Superthrive contains hormones and 50 Vitamins. It does wonders with sick plants, seedlings or healthy plants that need a boost. It is not a fertilizer. In fact, it can be used with fertilizer, but not to be confused as a fertilizer. Neither methods are needed, but as a long-time gardener, I've been using/doing both over 20 yrs. Actually longer, but I won't go there, lol. Hope your Spider does well...Toni...See MoreMy baby giant seqouia is turning brown
Comments (65)Btw, what kinds of non peat based potting soils are out there? I had been using Vigaro with a good bit of luck, BUT, what else is out there in big box stores? I tried "Miracle grow" because I had THOUGHT it was "the best" because of it being sold everywhere, and it sure isn't cheap. I'll be sticking with "Vigaro" from now on. It's cheaper than MG too. It DOES have a LOT of "forest products" in it, and THAT is why I switched to MG. I had seen a Youtube video that had spoken badly about potting soils with lots of "forest products" in it, meaning wood fines, and other organic matter in it, BUT, it works quite well, I should have never tried the MG. It seems that the Vigaro had held onto moisture more than the peat based MG potting soil. that's just MY experience though. BTW, I did NOT use a giant pot though, so, that will surely make a lot of difference. Vigaro is cheaper too. About $8 a bag, BUT, the ounces or square feet, I have NO idea. And MG is about $12-$15 bucks a bag, ABOUT the same size. I get mine at Home Depot at that price of $8 a bag for the Vigaro, BUT, to each their own. The Vigaro would surely be TOO moisture holding for a tree in a pot THAT size....See MoreSquishy leaf tips/bent baby Leaves.. what is this?
Comments (2)YAY!!!!!!!! I"m so glad this doesn't mean they all picked up some HORRIFIC fungus and I Have to completely sterilize the soil.. etc. etc. We get such soggy winters, I got so desperate, I even went and dug a few inches into the soil on a few of the nice days last week to check and see if they all died over the winter, or if they were making any plans to start showing, so I was kind of sad when I saw all teh squishy stuff. I'll leave them alone, then, and not pull of the brown parts. Thanks, Floota :)...See Morefantasy brown granite w/ Sunset cherry cabs : backsplash assistance
Comments (13)Watch out for trying to mix cool grays with warm oak. Small amounts work OK. A gray backsplash would have gone with my countertops - but would have been drab with my warm wood. Warm wood tones and cool grays do not bring out the best in each other which is why the gray is usually paired with white. Gray is a bit overused right now which means it risks being labeled "dated" in the next 10 years though it will always be an important neutral - like cream and beige. Go ahead and try it in wall color that can be easily changed but be careful of using too much in more permanent surfaces. The grays in your countertop read warm which is why it is working with your cabinets. Consider your wall color last as it is the least permanent surface and easy to change....See MoreKathy Rivera
