Comments (21)I really do appreciate everyone's feedback. I am trying to fully understand them so I can incorporate it or correct my design. Sorry, I meant "UNLIKE many of our friends" (about the finished basement familyrooms). Also, yup, that monster brick fireplace is staying. It is structurally part of the house, so much that the flooring joists changes direction, depending on where it touches the fireplace. Also, I plan to use the area next to the kitchen (back of the peninsula) as a keeping room, since EVERYONE who comes over hangs out in my kitchen area. No one ever goes into my spacious livingroom (opposite corner of my kitchen), I will flip them and put the diningroom there. So I will need the 2 stools eating peninsula. I tried out the shallow U-shape, but I like the fact that the peninsula is a barrier for me so that people do not come into my cooking area. People can easily go to the sink/fridge, but I like having my own space in the cooktop area. Sorry that I couldn't add any ceiling moldings or valances or glaze on the painted cabinets w/ my design software. Rhome410/marcolo: Can you please help me understand your feedback: "arrangement around the window looks a little forced"? Also: "keep the range area one color, and not pick up that colorway again on that run. You could try going back to wood or whatever once your turn the corner on the left". - So sorry, but I am not sure which left. Should I keep it all in warm cherry, even peninsula? On the color part: I wanted to break up the monotony of just the warm cherry and to bring a focal to the windows. My 42" copper hood is gorgeous, but I think it ranks below the windows. So I thought to milk paint it blue/grey like the island in the marble backsplash inspiration. I don't think I want the cabinets any lighter. Could I get the lightness from the daytime light (from windows) and lots of recessed lights/pendants/undercab lighting? Or should I have the 3 uppercabs (on sink wall/flanking hood) painted also (see sink inspiration picture)? So would the sink/DW/dishes jut-out be fine WITHOUT the same color valance/awning/corbels, etc, and just leave the windows as in and just have the painted bottom 3 cabinets? And not paint the peninsula also? I thought to paint the peninsula because I haven't love any butcher block on stain cabinets. Like the sink inspiration picture, for more contrast, I can put marble on the sink countertop (and on the hood backsplash). For left DW and cooktop area, I can put ink-dark-stained butcherblock. Or am I missing it entirely? The 2 DWs will be paneled: the left one will be cherry, and the right one will be milk paint. I will try to make the sink cabinets as 3 drawers, same as the 3-drawer dishes cabinets. Christine40: I love your kitchen! CEFreeman: do you own Barker Cabinets? I thought I saw your login name on their Google Review. How do you like Barker Cabs? The more I read about them, the more excited I am about using them for my kitchen. Mama_goose: my sweet darling husband does not seem to notice his strength or may be a bit clumsy, as he often drops big stuff onto my soft pine floor, leaving lots of dents/indentations. Again, thank you very much for your help. I really appreciate it. Amanda...See MoreGranite 911: Will you help me narrow the choices???
Comments (40)Bk wow you are moving at record speed! Hope things are going well w/remodel Ok here's my humble op #1 Harvest cream - goes well w/both, subtle, classy - works #2 Ivory Chiffon - same as above #3 River white - because it is creamy - not white & works #4 Kashmir Gold - I initially totally ruled it out, because yellows are a very hard color to work with - but now that you have shown your family room - I would def put this in the running - Lots of yellow & golds in there including mantle, flooring I find the silver one too cold as most the whites (valley)- & fighting the cream cabs as does the top green I would request sample of your top 3-4 as large as you can get & bring them into your space w/ANY other parts of your palette - stainless(if you are using any DW, range, etc), wood flooring, furnishing, paint, backsplash, of course cabs, hardware - leave & "live" with it (even though i think you are in a condo now) - but see it in different lights etc The counter stone is just one part of the pallette and a big one - So, any of the palette that is known at this time would be critical to use to make the decision. i.e. I had r/o the kashmir gold until I saw more of the family room. Good luck!...See MoreMy kitchen is new but i hate it...(pics) what can i do to improve
Comments (37)Dear Polar Princess, I am happy to read of your recent survivorship and a getting new lease on life. I think your oak cabinets look very well made and can be a star with some new accessories. Oak is a timeless, beautiful wood. Here are the changes I would try for minimal cost: 1) As has been mentioned numerous times: remove the stenciling & ivy to freshen the look. 2) If you can easily remove the light bridge over the sink and add molding to the top of the 2 cabinets where it connected, that will also modernize the look, as previous poster suggested, for not much money. 3) Backsplash: Provide Maximum sizzle and splash, which will transform the kitchen with a shimmering glass tile mosaic. See link below as example. Your area is not big, so you could pull this off for only $200 to $250 in materials. 4) Definitely bring in the brown leather bar stools you like or even something very modern in style as a contrast. 5) Counter tops: white laminate is not necessarily bad. In fact, if you add a shimmering glass backsplash that is a nice counterpoint to the white counters, you may find they are now more pleasing to you, without going to the expense of adding granite. You already know how easy to maintain your laminate counters are. You might jazz them up with some interesting place mats or update your centerpiece to be more in keeping with the brown leather & mosaics. 6) Window valence: maybe replace the lace look with something more tailored to complement the new backsplash and stools. 7) Wall paint: See how the backsplash changes the look and decide if you want to add wall color or not. 8) If you still yearn for SS appliances, check into changing out the front panels of the frig and dishwasher with SS. Don't think that is possible with the stove. I would really keep the bisque because they will look nice with the new backsplash as well. The link is from a larger website with many different choices of mosaic color combinations. The featured one is Anima because I think it would complement your while/bisque and oak and brown leather. Also check out several of the Spectralight (with and without El Dorado), Shimmerfly (one is Honey Pearl)and others which might complement your adjacent room colors. Good luck with all your decisions. We celebrate that you are here to make them! Anna Lee F Here is a link that might be useful: Glass tile backsplash...See MoreFound My Granite Slab What do you Think??
Comments (132)You changed the photo at 10:13 and that changed everything that follows. Be careful or you and we aren't going to be able to keep things straight. My favorite is still the one Mayflowers posted because it has such a lovely color. The green will compliment the red in the cabinets while accentuating the softer tones in your floor. It has movement without being busy or loud. Stunning. The soapstone and costa esmeralda would do well too, but they are darker and you have clearly not entertained that idea. I'm going to try to ignore this thread now. I've said all I can say. Thank you kksmama for finding something to remember in it. It isn't original. I think any good designer, the pros and the experienced amateurs here, will all tell you the same thing. I'm sure I've read it all here before. And now I'm going to vent a little and try not to lose the playing nice factor altogether. My frustration here is that I don't feel the OP is paying attention. Maybe they just don't get it and I can't explain it any better. The suggestion to get a pro involved and looking at these in person has been made more than once. I think its time to heed that advise. It takes time and effort for us to open up multiple screens and look at them and then comment on them thoughtfully. When the comments appear to be ignored, or at least not beneficial, and followed only by another set of photos that show we aren't making any progress in the process, I have to stop. I suspect others already have. Good luck....See MoreRelated Professionals
