Suggestions for food at a simple baby shower?
Comments (27)I know your plan is dessert, just simple and elegant. While it sounds lovely, will your guests be expecting luncheon spread?. All of the bridal and baby showers I have attended or hosted, start at 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. and end after gifts are opened and cake is served. Perhaps it is a regional thing, and I am in the minority here on the East Coast. Just thought I'd share my own experiences. I recently hosted a baby shower that started at 2:00. I served chicken breasts stuffed with feta and chopped sundried tomatoes, sliced and arranged on a platters; a chilled wild rice salad, grilled asparagus arranged with sliced roasted beets tossed with a light vinagrette. Luncheon prior to gifts. Cake and coffee were served after the gifts were done. All of the luncheon food was prepared ahead and served at room temperature. It may just be my family and friends or a regional thing, but they expect a luncheon even if the shower is called for 2:00. My guests would forego lunch at home in anticipation of it being served at the shower. I was just curious if it is a regional thing that your guests won't be expecting a luncheon, or perhaps the invitation indicates just a sweets type shower? It is so very generous of you to host the shower. Have a wondeful time. Baby showers are so appreciated by the mom-to-be and much fun to celebrate the soon to be new arrival!...See MoreA couple of baby blankets
Comments (12)SheilaJoyce, motifs are never really my preference either. I really hate all those ends. There were nearly 200 for each of those blankets, but after completing one color on all the motifs, I would go back and hide the threads from the previous color and that way it wasn't so bad at the end of the project. Bored? Heck yes! These blankets were small so it wasn't a big deal, but remember when I posted about the Blue Delft HUGE afghan I finished last year? That thing took me nearly five years to complete because it just made me yawn while making it, even though I knew it would be beautiful when finished. I get bored easily. That's why I have to have several projects going at once....See MoreNeed book club food suggestions
Comments (13)Hush puppies, bear claws, salmon, AK cole slaw. Great suggestions! Keep them coming. I have considered ordering reindeer dogs. Will check into that today. Unfortunately can't have shellfish in the house (crab, lobster, clams, shrimp, etc.) ... for two reasons... 1.) I love shellfish ... and 2.) it will kill me. I developed an allergy to it in 2000. Very depressing. Glenda, I think you should keep the reindeer poop swizzle sticks, you never know when you might entertain some promising gentleman some evening. :-) Jodi- who's thinking it may be a strickly dessert menu :-)...See MoreFood Books
Comments (95)veer, I just learned recently myself that what we call arugula is the same thing as rocket. Shaw was very clever when he said that we are two nations divided by a common tongue. The book maintains, and I agree, that there is a great divide in America. A great many people live primarily on fast food and convenience food, and eat both unhealthfully and without much sophistication. Lots of people never cook other than to heat something in a microwave oven. On the other hand there is a large and growing segment of the population with a great interest in good food -- the "foodies" -- who dine out or cook at home. Look at the success of the Food Network on television these days. This interest seems to be centered most heavily around the Northeast and the West Coast, although I'm sure many such people are found all throughout the country. The book was a lot of fun to read. My poor husband was trying to read his own book on the plane and I kept nudging him to read bits to him. (It's only fair -- he asks me crossword puzzle questions.) You should be able to find it if you are interested. I bought in a bookstore in Florence, and I see that Amazon UK has it. And yes, we did come home inspired. I have made several things we learned, and my son was gratifyingly impressed. Tonight Tom will be cooking my almost-birthday dinner and I'm eager to see what he comes up with. Someone said to me, Oh how nice that you took your husband to cooking school with you. I replied, How nice that he took me. It was his idea in the first place! He generally comes up with good ideas....See More- 5 years ago
