Baby's First Foods

Maybe I should post this on the other side, but it is about cooking for and feeding another person, so I wasn't sure.

Anyway, Drake is 5 months old and is acting ready for solids. (I've fed him a little, more on that in a moment) He's got the hand-to-mouth motion down, he's sitting really well with some assistance, he grabs for food when we sit down to eat and he watches me put food in my mouth with great interest. Doc says not to feed him solids for another month, but he is ravenous and is quite the voracious nurser these days. He wants to eat all night, and mama wants to shut down the all night cafe and get some sleep!

We went to eat Mexican the other night and I was holding Drake in my lap. He grabbed a nacho off my plate and very nearly fed it to himself. DSW said "Ok, that's enough proof for me" and went to order a teensy bowl of refried beans for Drake. He slurped them off my finger hungrily and seemed delighted to be getting real food. He's had a little rice cereal mixed with breastmilk, some mashed peas, some mashed sweet potatoes mixed with breastmilk, and some mashed banana. This isn't store bought baby food I'm feeding him, because that stuff just seems nasty to me. (I do not mean to offend.)

Now, I'm not feeding him huge amounts and I'm nursing him right after. I feel a little bad about feeding him solids before 6 months because of the research that links feeding a baby too early to obesity. And he is already a big boy, not fat, necessarily, just BIG. Doc is already saying he's going to be at least 6 ft, at least 220 as a full grown man. And she was in my face, making me promise not to feed him.

So....... thoughts? Recipes? LOL
